ITV4 Silverstone Classic........v6sadbastards.net may have its biggest exposure yet [smilie=yay.gif]
Thanks for the reminder Brett.

Just finished watching the feature - the racing on Saturday would have been quite hairy, but some very skilful driving! :salut:

Pity the Vees were not featured, even in passing......

Really enjoyed the on-track battles. Wish all races were televised in full. :approve:

Some trivia for those interested: Contrary to what viewers were led to believe, it wasn't THE Le Mans winning Porsche 917K short-tail (Number 23) that took part in the Masters race, but a replica, albeit one that was built by Porsche, and it is part of the Historic Collection - the giveaway is the absence of two small shark fin type vertical stabilisers on the engine cover (above the rear wheels). The real deal is said to tucked up in a collection in the US - I have photos of that one.

Pity Sabine Schimtz didn't get a chance to put their 962 through its paces .............

Do you know the provenance of the GT1 we saw Dulan? Ex works car, ex road car or...? Still can't believe I missed it start up and drive off

Not sure about that one Jon, never seen a black one before. The ones that won Le Mans were white (and one was at Goodwood). Just to confuse you further, of the Le Mans winning GT1's, the cars that raced in 1996 had 993 headlights (i.e. the same as my 993RS), the 1998 cars had 996 headlights, and those raced in 1997 had both depending on when they were built! Those built in 1997 were referred to as the GT1 Evo, and the 1998 car was all new. I believe only a handful were built as road cars.

So the black one we saw at Silverstone was built in 1997 or after, possibly as a street car, and if it did race it was probably in the US.

Check here for some photos of all variants of GT1's, including some street cars, and one was on display at Goodwood (the first three photos): LINK (The black GT1 from Silverstone is shown here too, so you can see the differences between all variants). Some hand drawn sketches of the engine and turbo layout too are included!

If you are referring to the black GT1 (i.e. the one in the 4th, 5th and 6th photos in the above link), then "yes", that is the one.

got to remember the GT1 name only referred to the race series regs the cars were built for, the 911 GT1 (black cars in photo and others there) is completely different and much more like a road 911 to the GT- 98 (white car on top row of photos) which is much more a prototype race car and bears no resemblance to a 911 as its based around a carbon fibre tub.

True the series that the cars raced in was called GT1, but the Porsche factory built race car was called GT1 as well. The white car in the first three photos are of one of the very few street versions built (a 1998 model, photo taken at Goodwood FoS 2013), the race versions built between 1996 and 1998 evolved from the 993 to the 996 based 911's, so they are similar, but different, with the 1998 GT1-98 being all new when compared to the 1996/97 versions. Of course, they were all based on the 911 that was current at the time, namely the 993 and 996. This approach and concept was very similar to the 934 and 935 that used the 930 Turbo as its underpinnings.

Great pics Blake, well worth the wait! ;) They capture the mood and essence of Silverstone Classic just right :approve:

I still need to add some content to this thread, just not had time to sit down and do it. Mallorca was wonderful btw :)

That's the one mate. The blame for my missing it start and drive off is purely on you. ;) :) Fantastic looking thing. Probably one of the meanest looking and focused cars I've ever seen! 8)

Yup, I know this as it was my (very fast, very twitchy) weapon of choice on Project Gotham racing 2!!

Was fantastic to see one in the carbonfibre? finally!
