Megane Ricardo's Budget Track 225

I have CLIP available so hopefully I can deal with any problems, I have the puncture warning up as well because of the tyre sensor but I'll have that switched off what with the new wheels. Can't wait to have the after market steering wheel fitted to a car with that should have an air bag
Will look good

So this morning I pop up to Alex to have him swap the wheels over and have a quick look over the suspension, brakes etc.

New discs and pads all round
Inner and outer track rod ends
4 pot pins.

OE rear brakes as they don't really do much, as mentioned being a 56 plate he seems to think it has the bigger bearing R26 rear brakes. It has drilled front discs but have no idea whether they're aftermarket or something off a higher spec Megane. Pads up front, as it's on the road more than the track we're thinking Ferodo DS2500. Where I buy the brakes from will be who can come up the cheapest, so my parts guy at Renault, Renault parts direct or George who everyone on the net seems to use.

We also have a date for all the work to be done, Saturday 14th May which gives me 3 weeks to source the cheapest price for parts. So that's brakes, coilovers, track rod ends, fingers crossed nothing else rears it's ugly head during that day.

The Recaro seats have been sold and should be picked up next weekend so that's recouped some of the Meganes outlay. As for the wheels, it needs lows. I'm not 100% sold on them yet, I'm not sure whether it's the black on black combo, too much arch gap but I'm actually preferring the anthracite R26 multi spoked look. At one point today I was thinking am I actually ruining the car by changing the wheels and ripping the seats out, once they're sold I won't get another pair. Anyway, I'll still plough on with my plans..... I reckon the end product will prove me right..... It's still a work in progress. DSC_0065-01.webp DSC_0070-01.webp DSC_0073-01.webp

You are broken if you thing the car looks better on standard wheels ! ;)

The 225 runs 25mm center bore rears , the r26 ( and later 225 ) ran 30mm centers. You can use the clio r27 solids for much cheapness on hte rear.

Drilled and grooved discs were on the r26 as well as the R. They are bloody expensive. I rand Brembo HC and DS2500. I would recommend the DS1.11 if you are tracking the car lots. However, I must add I experienced no fade with the DS2500. Some hardcore track nutters just recommend the 1.11 over the 2500.

Usually as soon as you put a wheel on its like Bam! I get the significance of the R.... But something ain't hitting me straight off the bat like a wheel should do

might be the black on black thing, not enough contrast between the 2? maybe satin black would work or red?

Defo measure the rear bearings before parting with the folding mate - I assumed mine were 30mm as it's a 56 plate with the Cup pack too, but alas, on measuring them, they were 25mm.

I run Brembo HC + 2500s up front, with ATE 'blue' fluid. All good & no brake fade on track (Croft, Blyton, Teeside), and you know how heavy I am on braking (ref' T-Cup's painted wheels at Donington).

Just out of curio', how did your mate remove the inner track rods?

He's not done any work on it yet, while the wheels were off he found little play in the outer track rod ends. He said he might as well do the inners and supply the parts too, I'm gonna leave the car with him for the day to crack on with all the jobs, he's gonna do it at the workshop on the ramps.

Be interested to know how he removes them. Renault say the rack has to be fixed in place, to avoid any rotational stress when loosening off the inner rod, others say to just use a slip-on serrated socket/wrench, and the rest reckon mole-grips or stilsons will do the trick.

Needless to say, my inners need replacing (already got the parts/kit for both sides), but I don't want to feck the rack in the process, and I don't have the slip-on tool either. All the other suspension parts (bjs, drop-links, anti-rot' links, t.r.e, springs) I've replaced were an utter nightmare given most of the fixation nuts were seized solid, or rounded-off condition where a previous owner had replaced them (or tried to, and subsequently gave up), hence my concern with replacing the inner rods...

I am sure they can be done without the tool. My Meg had them done .

I would also suggest getting a rack bush changed as well. Steering felt strange when initially done ( notchy ) but was awesome and tight immediately after .

Just ordered the steering wheel hub from Demon Tweeks, that should be with me by Wednesday. @Adey could you tell me where you ordered the buttons for the cruise control setup please

I've ordered 5 black buttons, I've also found a company on E Bay that sell carbon offcuts so I'll have a measure up, order it, then design something to have it resembling something half decent. @Adey I don't suppose you have any pics of behind the steering wheel to see all the gubbins etc

On a personal note I'm slightly struggling with where it's all going, the wheels have put me on a bit of a downer what with forking out a tidy sum and to have the car not looking the way I want it to be. Gonna concentrate on other aspects of the project to stop me dwelling on the scenario too much.

You dont have the coilovers on it yet do you ?
I personally think they look great.
