Megane 225 Cup

Hi All (Apologies for the read first off & Also copy & Pasted from another forum)

I have a thread on here with regards to my BMW e60, really need to update it etc. However, back in August/Early September i was getting itchy feet on wanting something fun again. Not that the BM isn't fast, it is - But not in the same way a Hot Hatch is.

So speaking with a Friend, who is a Renault Master technician, i was looking at 197's / Megane 225's (previously had a 197) So he knew someone who was potentially selling one, with recent work carried out inc cambelt etc - i said fire them a message and let me if still for sale. This dragged on for a weeks - Don't think he really wanted to sell it.

However, my friend then sent me links to few Megane's up sale, and one caught my eye, However, it was in Nottingham, and i live in Edinburgh. Anyway after contacting the seller, it seemed really difficult to get any real info on the car, and then after a message said just phone me. This was at 10pm at night. So i did, long story short, much easier to chat to him than message and answered all my questions etc and deposit paid.

So Booked a train down to Nottingham, well just outside, and the seller was happy enough to collect me from the station, took me out and test drive etc. I was more than happy with it, and a fair price. Again alot of major work carried out, However no receipts to prove this, but did say the garage that done the work would happily vouch the work had been, and turns out it is a Renault Specialist in Nottingham he is friends with. So again happy with this and have it in writing said works were carried out, just no invoices etc.

So Details on the car.

Its a 2008 Renault Megane Sport 225 CUP in Ultra Blue (RND) 2nd best colour to Liquid Yellow IMO - 110K on the clock when collected, average milage, Has had the Recaros from an R26 fitted to it, so Bonus there, also had all the Engine and Gearbox Mounts upgraded to K-Tec Racing ones.

When collected it had 4 x Nankang NS-2R fitted, and weeks prior 4 x Wheel refurb in Black. These make a terrible road noise - as i found out coming up the M6 (Potentially Thinking Wheel Bearing that bad) However after seeing the fronts low, and swapping out for Rainsport 5's it was the tyres.

Since getting the car, i haven't done much to it, other than silly things, Got a new used engine cover, new dip stick, and getting all the plastics sorted under the bonnet. Also noticed the rear number plate lights weren't working, so got new units, one of them was just rust inside, replaced these and still nothing. Spoke to my friend who said it could be a fuse. Now being typical French, the Fuse for these is in the engine bay, in an upside down fuse box, that you need to take the battery and ECU out to get to. Changed this and still nothing.

So stripped the back of the tailgate and turns out all the wiring was shot and corroded, so stripped it back and put new in and sorted that.

Now being the CUP spec, it did not have the arm rest in the centre of the car, really bugged me after riding about in the BM for so long. So trip to the breakers and one got for £12.50, along with a few other missing trim bits.

Recently also have bought a new KTR induction kit for it of a breaker, thing is spanking clean, so not been long fitted the previous car. also got an MTC blue hose included with the sale. I've easily saved over £140 on buying new.

Future plans for the car are a Miltek exhaust, and a remap from Either RStuning, or EFI (Both well known Renault tuners) and tidy up all the body work, got all the paint etc, just need to wait for better weather.

If you have got to the end of that story, well done, will try and keep it updated and short and sweet going forward, but now for some pics :)

Day I picked it up and at a services

So a little daft thing done today that has annoyed me since i bought the car in September Last year, It's a common fault in the fact the glove box handle can snap inside - which in essence always causes it to drop down when driving. Also the spring for it had come out, and the light switch part of it was missing.

Que a trip to U-Pull it and £10 later i have a new used glove box which has a functioning handle. Literally 10 mins to change over, and was as good as new. the only thing i had to do to it is drill a 20mm hole in the back as my car has a thing called Renault Tunepoint. This essentially allows you to connect a USB to it and use it as CD changer.

Also gave the car a quick wash (No After Pics) as it was horrible, and always better to keep on top of it.

So, i bit the bullet and went and bought a KTR/Milltek Exhaust from K-Tec, got delivered today. i'm glad i never went for the 3" exhaust the 2.75" seems plenty. Just need to get time to fit the thing, also going to get a gasket for the front downpipe join, seems daft not too.

Its also booked in for Wednesday at a local Renault Sport Specialist, its needing a Drive Shaft seal - also get new fluid in the gearbox aswell, and asked them to check it all over underneath at the front, a few clunks and clinks, so wanting a list of the issues.

So another update......It was in at Rentec (Renault Sport Specialist) to sort the leaky Drive Shaft Seal out and Outer CV boot on that side. Got a call saying they have checked all over and seems in reasonable condition apart from the common Swivel Hubs. Little bit of play in them, The question was asked while that side is stripped it would be discounted rate to do it as its already stripped down to get shaft out. Gave the go ahead and would rebook in for the other side.

Thought that was the end of it, get another call, while stripping the hub down, someone in their wisdom has threaded a bolt and looks like they went gun ho with a gun to put bolt on. Luckily they had a specialist on the way to garage for another job to drill and helicoil the offending item. All being well i shall get the car back tomorrow with a bigger bill than expected. Some pics below and the offending hole stripped and repaired.

So the day Finally came yesterday of fitting the brand new Stainless Exhaust, this is a KTR/Milltek exhaust from K-Tec Racing, and is a lovely bit of kit. Not to loud and nice burble and looks the part aswell.

Had issues with the studs on the CAT to Front pipe, 10mm nut which with being on the exhaust and heat cycles left it rounded. Managed to sort them out and fitted the exhaust.

So done a little thing on the Megane today, i've had the front bumper on and off, and also when i've been under the car i noticed the strengthening plates that go from the Front Subframe and to the Chassis leg are typical and corroded. Now i know they are like and annoyed me.

So a quick message to a local company who do Shot blasting and for the sum of £10 and 5 minutes of their time back to bare metal. Got home, primed them up and a good few coats of the finest Matt Black and now looking more presentable.

So yet another update on the Megane (Must be getting border of them all)

Seen this on Cliosport.net with a member that takes superb care of his Megane, So Renault in all their wisdom have a nice opening in front of the bottom AUX belt, and any rouge piece of rubbish has the potential to take it out (Highly Unlikely - But better to be safe than sorry)

Pic 1 is what it is like, Pic 2 is Rivnut put in, Pic 3 is plate in place making sure all is good, and pic 4 is final product, Just some satin black rattle can.

So Another little update on the Megane,

a Pair of Brackets for the Brake Vacuum & Pressure Sensors. These can come lose and pop out as they are not very well held in, Bolt holes already present. Also being used saved over Half the price of new.

They as Aluminum does oxidized by the looks of it, so a bit of Buffing and mess we have nice shiny brackets, you can see the difference.

Well its been all quiet on the western front here, still got this absolute machine and love it more and more. i have been doing stuff, just not had the time to post and keep update, however here is a few.

First off, after fitting the exhaust and induction kit on the car, i always fancied a map for the car to compliment the modifications. So a trip was booked in with a company called EFI down in Runcorn, i live just outside Edinburgh, So last Thursday i set off at 0700 for a 1230 appointment. The trip was so worthwhile!!! Got the car on the dyno, done a few runs to make sure it was all safe to proceed with the mapping and good news it was.

What was noticed when mapping the car is 2 things, 2st one being the intercooler was prob past its best, was running 10c over where it should be so final power was down a little, and also the spring on the actuator for the turbo has lost some of it's spring, 10 mins to sort that, so was holding boost as it should, and away it went.

Final Figures were 246BHP at the Fly & 284lbft Torque - this was approx 10bhp & 10lbft of Torque of where it should be due to the intercooler - So on Sunday night i ordered a slightly uprated one, delivered Tuesday and got it fitted, however when deliverd it was slightly damaged, spoke to the company who gave me a partial refund, and was able to sort, so no big issue - so now should be at the desired figures. Will need to pop back to EFI to make sure all is running ok and get a new graph etc showing the correct figures.

Anyway, less rambling and some pictures, 1st one is on the rollers, got some Videos, which i will post later, not really interesting TBH, and then the strip down of the front, and replacement of the intercooler, Bumper is 10 mins to get off, then its a case of undoing the headlights to get the 2 bolts holding the crash bar on to give more room to remove/refit intercooler. Then bumper on an happy days.

Another update,

The other week i decided to change out the plugs, as i have no history of them being done, now looking around for prices, all around £50 for a set of NGK PFR7Z-TG plugs, i got a set from Euro on a sat, so didn't have to wait for delivery - Don't list them under Reg, but do stock them.

Whipped everything off, and managed to crack the breather pipe from sandwich plate to inlet, my own stupid fault, taped up the crack with Electrical tape as was only a crack, and put off getting a new until next month. Drive home yesterday forced my hand, snapped off completely - which meant an air leak as such and high idle. More tape and sorted temp just now and ordered a new one up from RPD (Part no 8200581292)

Also while swapping out plugs, i changed out the stupid bolts for the coils, and nut & studed it, much better (As if you have one of these, threads are chocolate)

Now on to the more controversial for some folk - Spacers!! I know not everyone's cup of tea, but i won't be tracking the car etc, just enjoy driving it around etc, IMO it now sits alot better, i believe when i bought it had a set cooksport springs on it, never checked. Went for 20mm Spacers and longer bolts, Ordered Yesterday and delivered today, great service! I've also bought a Quick Alignment tool for mounting the wheels on etc, use it for the other car and they work a treat. Anyway, some pics now!!

Another one, So i'v done a thing, no idea if it will do anything, but always fancied doing it, Will add 1000BHP i reckon!!

the wrapping is something Stevie wonder done, i will prob re-visit at some point and try and make neater. Also unsure about the brackets being done. But i'll live with for now!

No need to worry about making it neater. No one can see it when the bonnet it shut.

That's true, But anytime i open it i'll see it and it'll annoy me ha ha, Just like things to be neat and tidy, i get it's nothing special, but my mantra is - do it right or no point.

So it's been a little quiet on the western front recently, just with the cold weather etc, just not interested in rolling about being freezing cold. However things have taken a dramatic turn (For the Better - Some may Disagree) So on Friday just passed i was browsing the interweb at work, and thought to myself, i know i'll buy a short shift for the car, onto ED webshop and one was bought and delivered Yesterday. However on the Sunday while browsing the FB - Noticed a lovely example of a Meg 250 Cup up for sale from RS Independent Specialist, and buy Tuesday it was bought!! Went down to collect today and what a difference inside the cabin. Going from the MK2 Cup with fully polypushed engine and box, its night and day. So a quick email to Andy at ED and the Short shift is returning for a refund. I will get a thread up on the new to me car and go from there, but picture from a service stop on the way back home below.
