Renault 5 low rev hesitancy

Hi All,

I've just posted an introduction, and right away I am going to ask for help!

Car in question is a 1994 R5 with the fuel injected 1390cc C3j engine. It hesitates at low revs - which can be difficult at junctions. I have also noticed that the idle control motor continually clicks in and out when starting from cold - not sure if the two things are related.

I understand the basics of fuel injection but I am also trying to learn the detail, so I can diagnose and resolve. The car did stand unused for a number of years.

I have bought some injector cleaner which I will put in the tank when I have used more fuel up, and then take it for a French/Italian tune-up, but any other advice welcome.

Research so far indicates that this engine/injection setup was used on R19s of the same period - is that correct?

Thanks,

Phillip

I don't have any direct experience with the C3J, but I'd suggest replacing the plugs, leads and fuel filter as a matter of course. Also, check for air leaks around the inlet manifold, and any damaged or disconnected vacuum pipes (evaporation canister purge system, for example).

The fuel pump may also be suspect, especially if the car has been left to stand. Probably a good idea to give the tank a good clean-out.

Thanks for this advice - I've replaced all the leads and plugs; got a dizzy cap, rotor arm and fuel filter to do next. I'll check for air leaks - when cold, the sound is reminiscent of "hunting" - which in a car with a carb I'd be suspecting an air leak.

Hoping to get some time to do this at the weekend.

Fingers crossed you find something simple! I should have a manual that covers the injection system, if you need any sensor data etc, I'll dig it out for you.

Hi, welcome. You could always try to take the idle control motor off and give it a clean.

I'm not familiar with the C3J engine either but I would suggest changing the coolant temp sensor, especially if the car has been sitting a long time. Cheap and easy to do.

Hi,

I'll try both of those routes. Changing the coolant is on the jobs list anyway - so I'll do that when I do that job and chec the resistance. I have a Haynes manual which gives the resistance measurements.
