Stick a fuel pressure gauge on the fuel line and it will take all the guesswork out of it to check the reg.

If it was mega rich chances are the engine would not idle. Sounds like an air leak, breather off or whatever.
 
The enrichment diaphragm is split causing fuel to go out of the overflow.
Wow! Never had a diaphragm split on any of my carb's before...? I guess it may have age hardened a little bit having sat on the engine for so long without fuel in..?

Can you clarify which one of these three you suspect it is?? Thanks for your help @Brigsy

Pic 2. Its split with age, not uncommon. Id doubt its fuel pressure related, they usually just flood the venturi from the top gasket when the fuel pressure overcomes the float / needle jet.

Stick a gauge on the fuel inlet to the carb. Generally when the reg fails the pressure drops or diaphragm splits causing it to fill the carb via the boost reference point.
 
Shot in the dark, but I rebuilt my 11T carb with a weber/Solex kit when I put it back on road in ????? And it idled high, replacement washer on idle jet capsule was too thick, put old one back on and ran a treat, not saying it's your problem, but it caused me similar issues.

Got hold of a fuel pressure gauge tonight, and tried to measure the pressure of the petrol entering the carb, it wouldn’t even give the pressure gauge needle a flicker… so I’m thinking that I should be testing the fuel pressure BEFORE the regulator..??

I could see that the fuel being delivered to the carb was coming thru in glugs like bullets coming out of a slow motion Tommy Gun… Blob, Blob, Blob, Blob?

The engine would run ok but again the idle was really high, I screwed the idle screw in all the way and it didn’t make a blind bit of difference!! So It’s looking very much like there’s a big fat air leak somewhere still..?

I am right in thinking that it should be the idle screw that decreases the idle speed??
 
You need to measure pressure on the pipe going into the carb when connected up, i.e. what the regulator sets it to. Should see 4psi on idle (4psi above boost pressure) so need a small gauge.

Id verify that the gauge reads correct. If it does the reg or the pump is prob shot. Basics first has it got a decent amount of fuel in the tank?
 
Ok, so I do have the fuel pressure gauge plumbed up the right way 👍. Will change the fuel pressure regulator for another one I’ve got and see what comes out.

Yeah I put a 20l Jerry can in the tank, so there’s some in there… you think I should add some more??
 
Stuck to what I know best this evening… and had a quick 30 minutes on the Powerflow Stainless Steel Exhaust seeing how it would polish up with a flick over from the mixed polishing pads I’ve got for my Angle Grinder. As you can see, the exhaust was far from looking its best:

But after only a couple of minutes it was looking a LOT better for itself!!

This is the set I’m using, a pack of three wheels (coarse, fine and polish) together with coarse and fine polishing soap. I find that the fine and polishing pads are just the ticket for this job:

Going to get that Fuel Pressure Regulator changed this weekend and have another run at getting the car running!!

Got the Powerflow exhaust mocked up on the car today, and chuffed how it fits!

Delighted with how it fits, I’ve ordered some stainless steel U clamps to fasten it all together.

Simon Byatt stopped by the Dojo today to pick up a C1J sump he was after. As is customary, I had a picture of him with the car:

Yes!!! The bl**dy thing now moves under its own steam for the first time in 8 years and 1 month!!!

I’ve not yet fixed the fuel pressure regulator, but managed to get the car running and idling better.

Turned it round in the garage, so I can make a start on the body-side mouldings on the off-side.

She’s SOOOO coming together now!!!

Still, on a positive note, I think it’s fair to say that the sheep-dip and re-paint doesn’t seem to have given me any massive issues over these last three years?? Haven’t seen any large patches of rust coming thru…?

Oh by the way, I’VE ONLY GONE AND BOOKED THE BLOODY MOT FOR SATURDAY MARCH 26th!!!
