Renault 11 Turbo Phase 2 Restoration

BREAKTHROUGH!!!

Good old @jas_racing came round today to help me wrestle the rear window in, and with a bit of jiggery/pokery we got it in!!!

We realised that there were two different lips in the seal and the smaller of the two was the one to secure the glass to the car:

Had to get it centred first:

Then it was a case of pushing down on the glass, whilst @jas_racing gave the cord a tug on the inside:

Before too long, it was in, and sitting flush:

Boyd by that success, we tried to understand why I couldn’t get the car to start.. last time I tried with @Kris M in August, we added petrol and found that there seemed to be an issue with the fuel pump, it was as if the fuel pump was running the wrong way, as there was no fuel reaching the carb.

We diagnosed that the pump was indeed running the right way, the problem was the fuel pressure regulator. I managed to get it off, and found that the diaphragm seemed to be stuck…?

Nevertheless after a bit of buggering about..

Although… it is a Renault after all… it’s not all plain sailing. It’s not starting every time you turn the key, I’m getting the dreaded Solenoid Click… so more work on the horizon!!

A weekend of UP’s 👍 and DOWN’s 👎

Finished another long weekend on Project 11 Turbo and had mixed success… Started off great getting the windscreen in!!! Dug it out of the garage loft:

Then found the new seal I bought for it ages ago:

First I fitted the seal to the screen:

Then we offered it up, and got the bottom of the seal in:

Before giving it the old string-special, and permanently fitting it:

With the windscreen now in, we re-fitted the a-pillar trim:

Next job, was to re-fill it with coolant. I’m always usually a die-hard OE guy… but this time after a lot of consideration, I decided to try some of this new waterless coolant. Yes it’s more expensive than good old Glaecol-D, and some people think it’s snake oil 🐍 but I thought I’d like to give it a try, and when I found I could get it in the right yellow/green colour as the Glaecol-D, it made the decision a no-brainer!! It’s the Evans Auto Cool 180 if you’re wondering:


My dad @Bloater decided to pop over and check on progress, so we couldn’t resist roping him into helping us re-fill the system:

With the cooling system now fully filled, we wanted to run the engine up to temperature to get the thermostat opened, and check there were no remaining air-pockets…. This is where things took a turn for the worst…



The engine fired up a treat, but continued to be idling at ~1500rpm instead of the recommended 800-900rpm. In the hunt to bring the idle down, now seem to have stumbled on an issue where fuel is pouring out thru the carb fuel overflow port…

I think that there’s still an issue with the fuel pressure regulator… so I’ve dug another decent looking one out of my collection, and will fit that sometime this coming week.

Felling a little disheartened by the carb issue, I decided to turn my hand to the exhaust, and check that the new-old-stock Bosal exhaust I bought was the right one, and fitted.. after a few minutes groping around on the floor, I found that I seem to have 2x Phase Two 11 Turbo centre sections, but a Phase One 11 Turbo back-box…. 🤬 so the OE style exhaust I was planning to fit, now isn’t going to work… 🤬🤬🤬

I’ll keep an eye out to see if I can come across a Phase 2 Bosal back-box (or similar)… but not all is lost, I did buy a Powerflow Custom 11 Turbo Stainless Steel exhaust, so I can clean that up and fit it, but I’m concerned it might be a bit chav, as the tailpipe is an outwardly rolled 3 inches type. So probably too big:

Oh hang on… that don’t look too bad at all, and properly fits the exhaust cut-out…. 🤔 hmmm, ignore what I just said about the Bosal option..! 🤣🤣

Couldn’t resist nipping out there tonight and pull the carburettor off and apart to see if I could see anything obviously wrong…??

Pulled it off and apart:

And everything seemed to be working like a champ!! No 💩 in the carb, all the little jets - “jetting” so I put it all back together and back on the car.

Re-started the car and she started ok and started idling fast like it was doing before. But no sooner had it settled down into a fast idle, the fuel started bleaching out of the overflow again and flooded the engine.

So things are definitely pointing towards that rotten fuel pressure regulator at the moment… going to whip it off and change it to see what happens…
 
As @Adey said, seems logical to rule out

You could while not ideal steal a know working carb from *cough* Raider ;)
I’m positive that this carb is working well, I think the issue is with the fuel pressure regulator. The car was running a treat before I started fiddling with the idle, but think it’s just a co-incidence that the FPR 💩 a 🧱 at the same time.

I don’t want to go touching the Raider. She’s a fighter.
 
@Big Steve - Raider . Fast running is usually associated with an air leak, rather than chronic rich mixtures. The fuel can really only be a dodgy needle valve leaking or too much fuel pressure causing an ok needle valve to behave like a dodgy one. Once you've done the pressure regulator if it is still running fast, try spraying some Carb cleaner round the Carb and gasket/ pipe joints if there's a leak it will get drawn in and you will hear a change in the engine tone. Silly faults like this always drive you mad......

Disconnect the pump power, pull the pipe off the carb and gravity feed it, you only need enough in the bowl to idle so a gravity feed ahould open the float valve. Use a bottle and a bit of pipe or something.

If it still does it you know the issue is the carb. If not then its pump/reg/pipework.
