Renault 11 turbo. Is it a deal?

Hi all. This is my first post and regards possibly my 2nd French car. The first being a grey phase 2 Peugeot 309 gti. I have been working in my local area in a quiet cul de sac where a gentleman has a silver Renault 11 turbo on a F plate covered in moss and algae . I have spoke to him and turns out the car has been on drive for a few years , but does run . He has a spare carb , 4 x tyres and other bits . The car is totally standard , no mot obviously and he has owned since 1991. There is lacquer peel on paint but seems very solid overall. What price would be fair and are parts fairly hard to come by? I would like to buy it . Many thanks

The big bit in terms of expense will the body. You need to ensure it is sound or it will be a @Big Steve - Raider resto job !
Parts are fairly easy to source

Fair price? Depends , but anything up from a good few hundred quid depending on whats on the car , and what needs doing

You would need to ensure it comes as complete as possible...

Engine/Gearbox/Running Gear parts are easy enough to source, the problem will be to obtain trim and model specific parts. You can still get new front wings from Renault, but all other body parts are pretty much no longer available..

First thing to check is if it's got a Sunroof.. if it has then consider your purchase very carefully as that will have leaked and made a mess..

Post up a couple of pictures so we can see what's needed??

As for price, I'd reckon it's worth no more than £500 as it is..

That's great thanks I'm by the car today so will take some pics . It is 100 percent Complete in every way but does have a sunroof but doesn't seem to have leaked . I'll post the pics shortly today

This picture shows the sunroof frame from an 11 Turbo donor car I stripped for my Restoration. You can see that the drain tubes on the edge of the frame deteriorate and will leak any water that pass the seal.

Here she is . With one hell of a valet the body work seems good and straight . All parts are there . The gentleman has owned since 1991 so just don't know if it's a big risk or at £500 ish could you get your money back if it was a scrapper ? Thanks for replys

You really need a screwdriver and get under the car. The sills rot for fun.
Check the windscreen seal and just underneath it . I can see rot on the images.
Just check for rot basically !

Its going to be a time intensive money intensive resto job but I must admit it looks well .

£500 gamble will turn into a £5k project ! :)

Thanks I will do the rust under the windscreen rubber is literally surface and quite solid . I will update as soon as

WOW! Looks pretty good for something that's sat there all those years! Certainly looks as though it's very complete! The interior looks ok. Couple of scrapes on the front bumper, but apart from that all good!

Deffo get underneath and have a good look at the area where the front wing joins the sill, and the rear chassis rail that run parallel to the side of the car next to the petrol tank. They were the 2 worst areas on mine. :D

Try & find out why he stopped driving it? Did the engine let-go, fail MOT or something?

Thanks for advice . It was dry stored for 5 years but been on drive for an additional 2 . The last mot was 18 months ago and failed on small things like brakes and drop links plus exhaust which he replaced . He got divorced and hasn't had the time or patience to put into it but if those areas discussed are fairly solid I will def buy it

Don't forget, you don't have to spend all the money it will take to restore it all at once, it takes weeks, months and maybe years of £50 here £100 there and before you know it you've got yourself a car as Rare as you can get in near perfect condition. Also the way the classic car market is moving with hot hatches you may even turn a profit on it if you decide to sell. IMHO you should always buy because you like it.

Yes I agree some of the classic hot hatches are soaring in value . I think if it can be motd without too much hassle then restoring it over time seems realistic . I may also be able to purchase a r5 gt turbo engine from a friends friend as these are apparently hard to find. I have rang the gentleman to purchase it but he hasn't answered so will have to try again tmw . Hope he hang changed his mind!

Why? The base engine is identical, if theres nothing wrong with it leave the R11 lump in there, you'll usually find them less ragged and better cared for.

Agreed most of the time the 11 turbo engines are sweet, however it is nice to have a spare if its cheap, stick it to one side just incase

The r5 engine was not long fully rebuilt and he crashed the r5. Just thought if I ever sold it might be a nice extra to have a complete spare engine with all ancillaries? Wouldn't want to give any more than 300 for it?
