5 GT Turbo R5 GT Turbo - Complete strip down and re-build #1

Been getting on with the body prep! I can see why body shops have to charge so much! this takes an age!
I started off using the dry guide coat!IMG_4719 2 Large.jpeg
and then got my new blocks out! woohoo!
IMG_4720 Large.jpegIMG_4721 Large.jpeg
IMG_4720 Large.jpegIMG_4721 Large.jpeg
Got flatting and straight away started to see some low areas beginning to appear!
IMG_4722 Large.jpeg

IMG_4724 Large.jpeg
Couple of low areas, but will catch them with some upol dolphin glaze! Then blocked the bottom half!IMG_4727 Large.jpeg
IMG_4728 Large.jpeg
Not too bad! a couple of low areas but nothing too drastic! I then drew around the low areas with a pencil and filled over the top, this way the pencil will re-appear as I block down through the filler and give me a sign to slow down a bit!

IMG_4747 Large.jpegIMG_4748 Large.jpegIMG_4749 Large.jpegIMG_4750 Large.jpeg
All good! On to the roof and windscreen surround! again started off with the guide coat!
IMG_4764 Large.jpeg
IMG_4765 Large.jpeg
This guide coat is great stuff! :) Just try not to drop it on the floor as it goes bloody everywhere!!IMG_4766 Large.jpeg
Some low spots around the wiper holes and some highs, so I gave the highs a bit of gentle persuasion with the small hammer and plastic chisel!
IMG_4768 Large.jpeg
IMG_4769 Large.jpeg

Out with the Dolphin! I marked the lows with a pencil again!
IMG_4770 Large.jpeg
IMG_4771 Large.jpeg
IMG_4772 Large.jpegIMG_4773 Large.jpeg
I then worked my way up the gutters and flatted them all the way to the rear tailgate.
IMG_4774 Large.jpeg
IMG_4775 Large.jpegIMG_4776 Large.jpeg
Then on to the roof, I have been dreading this!
IMG_4777 Large.jpeg
IMG_4778 Large.jpeg
Straight away the lows begin to show!

IMG_4779 Large.jpeg
This one is where I knocked a high back in, I dented it while welding when I spun the car on the spit and left a dolly in there! :)
IMG_4780 Large.jpeg
IMG_4782 Large.jpeg
IMG_4783 Large.jpeg

Kept on going! Found a high here and went through to the epoxy!

IMG_4784 Large.jpeg
IMG_4785 Large.jpeg
Got it down as far as I think it should go, time for the Dolphin! Got the pencil out again!
IMG_4786 Large.jpeg
IMG_4787 Large.jpeg
There are quite a few low spots on this!IMG_4788 Large.jpeg

IMG_4789 Large.jpeg
IMG_4790 Large.jpeg
Yeah, probably put too much filler on there, made it hard work for myself, but got there in the end!IMG_4791 Large.jpeg
IMG_4793 Large.jpeg
I then guide coated it again and blocked it back, just to check for any that I had missed!
IMG_4794 Large.jpeg
again, probably overkill, but wanted to be sure! ;)
IMG_4795 Large.jpeg
IMG_4796 Large.jpeg
All good! I then wheeled the car out and turned it around ready to attack the other side tomorrow! Plan is to get the shell all flatted and then get another coat or 2 of high build on it and block that back to flat, there are a couple of areas where I have gone through to metal, so will give them a touch up with some epoxy before priming!
IMG_4797 Large.jpegIMG_4798 Large.jpeg
Thanks for reading guys! 16 hours of sanding and flatting so far!

So, got out there bright and breezy with the intention of getting the whole shell blocked and sanded back, along with the epoxy touch ups done!
However, the sand paper has proved to be harder than my fingers! I only managed to finish the roof and the drivers side, leaving just the tailgate surround to sand back. I did touch up the bare metal spots with some epoxy!
IMG_4798 2 Large.webp
I sanded a little longer today and it seemed to do the trick!
IMG_4799 Large.webpIMG_4800 Large.webp
Then on to the problem side! this was the first side I started welding on!IMG_4801 Large.webp
IMG_4802 Large.webp
I blocked and sanded this all back and had to do quite a bit of filling and hammering to get it anywhere near right!
IMG_4807 Large.webp
IMG_4808 Large.webp
Then got the epoxy touch up on there!
IMG_4809 Large.webpIMG_4810 Large.webp

Thanks for reading guys, gonna go and stick my hands in the freezer!

Dedicated to the cause.
Mate I feel your pain , I got told many moons ago do a panel at a time while your learning the skills and keeps your spirits up . Cracking job I was lucky enough to have a few mates in the trade to help . But most had some kind of addiction to drink drugs or women. So reliability was the only issue

So, its been a week of pain after the sanding, I sanded my fingers literally bone and then couldn't sleep all week with the throbbing and pain at night! Lots of Ibuprofen. I even had to get a couple of tardy stickers on at one point!! just so I could carry on.

IMG_4811 Large.webp
Anyway, cracked on when I could and got the car masked up ready to get some more high build on!!
IMG_4812 Large.webp
IMG_4813 Large.webp
IMG_4816 Large.webp
IMG_4817 Large.webp
IMG_4819 Large.webp
Mixed up some paint and got spraying! Out of all the different paints I have used so far, this high build has given me the most trouble!

IMG_4825 Large.webp
IMG_4826 Large.webp
IMG_4827 Large.webp
IMG_4828 Large.webpIMG_4829 Large.webp
I left it a day or so and then got blocking again! I started at 180G then on to 320G then 600G and then hit it with the DA at 800G!!
IMG_4856 Large.webpIMG_4857 Large.webp
IMG_4858 Large.webp
IMG_4859 Large.webp
IMG_4860 Large.webpIMG_4861 Large.webpIMG_4862 Large.webp
I am really pleased with the way it is shaping up, the really bad panel distortion is now hidden and all the panels are flat! (I think!!)

IMG_4863 Large.webp

Thats it, I think the shell is ready for Paint!!!!!!!!

Thanks for reading guys, sorry its just filling and sanding!!

Over the weekend I have been looking at the arches, wings and fuel cap. The arches have quite a few broken and missing fixings, so i pulled my pants down and got absolutely reamed out to the tune of £47 for 14 screws! not even the right number of screws to fully fit the front arches as the three outer fixings are not included in the kit! I believe these should be an M4 ish screw with an insert, but i made do with what I had!
IMG_4864 Large.jpeg
I got the first arch out and came up with a plan to repair!
IMG_4867 Large.jpeg
IMG_4868 Large.jpeg
The ones that fit, I bonded into place, where I have broken stubs I got some 15mm plastic plumbing pipe!
IMG_4870 Large.jpeg
IMG_4872 Large.jpegIMG_4873 Large.jpeg
I cut the pipe to suitIMG_4875 Large.jpeg
and then bonded them on!
IMG_4876 Large.jpeg
I then got some fibre glass resin and filled up the pipes!IMG_4879 Large.jpeg
IMG_4880 Large.jpeg
I then set the screw in there and let it set!
IMG_4883 Large.jpegIMG_4885 Large.jpeg
I also did a small repair to the rear of one of the rear arches!IMG_4886 Large.jpeg
Now! lesson learned, when you are using 15mm pipe to repair these arches, make sure that the pipe and fixing are set deep enough, otherwise you get this!IMG_4887 Large.jpeg

IMG_4888 Large.jpeg
IMG_4889 Large.jpeg
You b**t**d!! I broke the two offending fixings out, wire brushed all the gunk off them and started again! this time setting them deeper!
IMG_4890 Large.jpegIMG_4891 Large.jpeg
Thats much better!! :)
IMG_4893 Large.jpeg
IMG_4895 Large.jpeg
I carried out the same process on all the arches and test fitted them to ensure that they look ok before paint!
IMG_4896 Large.jpeg
IMG_4897 Large.jpegIMG_4898 Large.jpeg
Once the arches were repaired, I began to sand everything down using a 320G ready for high-build! I knocked up a bit of a stand for the Wings so I could work with them on the bench!
IMG_4899 Large.jpegIMG_4900 Large.jpeg
Once sanded, I masked the back off!
IMG_4902 Large.jpeg
I then hung everything up and gave them all a good dose of panel prep and got on with spraying the high-build!
IMG_4903 Large.jpegIMG_4904 Large.jpegIMG_4905 Large.jpegIMG_4906 Large.jpegIMG_4907 Large.jpeg
Result!!
IMG_4910 Large.jpeg
Thanks for reading guys! edging ever closer to the Paint booth!!

Some grafting gone on there @Chris74#

Will be worth all the prep, bet you cant waot to give it colour 😉
Definitely can’t wait to get it painted, more so to stop the mess and dust that bodywork generates! Looking forward to getting on with reassembling the car, I have quite a stash of new parts for the brakes, although EBC have now told me that they cannot deliver the rear discs and pads until end of June! I can carry on getting the rest of the brake system on I suppose, if it’s even painted by then🤞🏻

Had to put up a quick post! I did a @Duncan Grier power hour this evening after getting back from work. I started by removing the broken glass from the mirrors! I taped the glass first so that I can use them as templates at a later date!IMG_4930 Large.webp
I then got sanding the body kit parts, first in 320G then in 600G. I decided to fit the parts back to the car as they become ready for paint! Seems logical and should be the safest place for them! It will also tell me if I have missed anything ;)IMG_4931 Large.webp
I got the rear lights down out of the loft, gave them a quick wipe and started to get the kit on! I had one of them real nice smiley moments when I stood back and looked at this!

IMG_4934 Large.webpIMG_4935 Large.webpIMG_4936 Large.webpIMG_4937 Large.webp
Its definitely starting to look like a car again! I know I have to remove everything again, but I think these moments are the ones that keep you going!!
Thanks for reading guys!

Dry build before paint is deffo worth doing, all the panels and major trim, bumpers lights, grill etc, you can make little adjustments , enlarge mounting holes, get panel fit right, even after doing that it's taken me hours to get them to fit as I did have them pre paint, but at least you know it all goes together right.

Words from the wise!! 👍

I took @Turbell's advice and began to prep the panels/ parts and then dry rebuild! Good job really as I have had to make some minor changes and re-drill a few things! I decided to work systematically from the rear to the front once I got the wings sanded down and repainted - I also made a really handy stand out of some scrap metal which I have used for painting - Pics can do the talking!

Starting to resemble a GT Turbo again :)
IMG_4994 Large.jpegIMG_4995 Large.jpeg
I have lost track of how many hours it has taken me to get to this stage, all panels have been filled, flatted and sanded to 800G. My fingers are sanded to the bone and this is pushing my patience to the extreme! Just the two doors, Bonnet, Grille and front bumper left to fill, sand, paint and block, then I have a problem with the drivers door that needs sorting out before it can go to paint!
Thanks for reading guys!
