I'm not sure there is a "perfect" solution. I didnt go for the dip because of how it floods the spot joints and fills the apertures I can't access - personal choice. However, please do not underestimate just how much work it is dealing with everything manually. Granted my shell is basically swiss cheese, but it demands a multi-stage approach to each repair. Cut out, clean, treat, prime, weld, prime again... I'm not sure how long I have been welding up the heap of crap but it feels like FOREVER.There is a lot to be said by replacing every piece of grot, bit by bit, with the car on a rotisserie. Great work @Chris74# !!!
I love a good restoration... (No surprise there!). Having been through this whole process on my R11 Turbo Restoration, please allow me give you this free advice.....Think very carefully about dipping the bodyshell

- You cannot under estimate the amount of work to just disassemble the bodyshell back to being BARE and getting it dipped
- EVERYTHING has to come off, every clip, bracket & wiring, but also the sealant..
- Re-sealing the bodyshell takes BLOODY AGES and is a NIGHTMARE
I'll do some more research in to it, i'm in no rush to get it finished, but do want to get it right. The company i have approached for the dipping offer a two stage process. They carry out the original dip and then return the bare metal shell back to you to carry out repairs. You then send it back to them and they carry out another chemical dip, followed by a primer dip. This sounds quite comprehensive to me and would get into all of 'hard to get to' places. I am no expert on this (not even a novice) and any advice/ experience that you guys can give will be greatly appreciated. I will keep the updates coming along and i'm sure i'll be chasing parts etc.I'm not sure there is a "perfect" solution. Good luck with whatever way you go @Chris74#

Thanks Stu, they dip the primer also, so should get everywhere covered.Saw a mark one golf that had bin soda blasted the other day . Don’t no about price comparison but It looked a tidy job . When you dip a shell I would worry about getting the bits you can’t see treated again , unless they dip coat the primer
Nice to see another GT get some attention
Good luck with it all
lol....Steve, you are correct, I have spoken to surface processing. The quote for the initial dip to remove the paint and rust comes in at £1200. The 2nd dip is £450+vat and the primer dip worked out around £2400. I took your advice and have been looking at seam sealer, i'm settling towards the 3M sealant at the moment.....any recommendations? You must be speaking to the guys at Surfaceprocessing i guess? I took my car to be dipped by the team at Enviro strip (You can read about my car dip here on my R11 Turbo Restoration Thread) and at that time (wow was it in 2014?!) they didn't do a secondary primer/rustproofing dip.
Check out my build and see the effort that I needed to go to, to get the shell re-sealed. I'd definitely recommend getting a proper seam sealing gun if I was going to do it again (like they do on the factory)
Keep up the good work sir!! And PLENTY of content on this thread please, makes great COVID-19 Reading![]()

Good on ya saving another GT Turbo! I think you are v.wise to be doing a lot of research before committing to anything! At least you now have the time to get stuck in to it!!?? Good luck and look forward to reading about it.
That's an aftermarket oil catch tank by the look of it..Can anyone tell me what this is?
Not sure this heat shield is standard either!
