5 GT Turbo R5 GT Turbo - Complete strip down and re-build #1

OK binned off the door reveals - and decided to tackle the dropped door! I have called a few local bodyshops, all declined to take this on! So during the week I ordered a right 105 degree angled attachment for the drill and a new 8 mm drill bit! The right angle drill I bought was too chunky and wouldn't let me drill straight.

I then got on with getting the door pins out, wasn't exactly overjoyed with the thought of hammering those pins out with nice new paintwork in the area, especially with how clumsy I am! Anyway, got them out after an hour or so carefully tapping away with various sized knocking sticks! Should of had someone hold the door as despite it being on the jack, it dropped and bent the front bottom corner of the door! Grrrrrrrr!! Door off!!

I got the door on the stand and messed about trying to get the last pin out, got there in the end with no real dramas.

Looks like a bit of rubbing has occurred, probably due to the door being so low!! Bit of touch up and all good!

I then got the 8mm drill bit on the go and splashed a bit of oil in the holes first, again slowly slowly and after about 10 mins, all holes were drilled out! Couldn't believe it! I then sprayed some copper grease in the holes!

I then got the trolly jack out and rested the door on it, I jacked it up and rolled it into position, I put a metal punch through the top hole and tapped the new larger roll pin into the bottom hinge! Then i tapped the top roll pin up into the top hinge and pulled the metal punch out! Door back on!! IMG_2536 Large.webp
Absolutely solid! no more drop in the door! Had to give the door a bit of a tweak by lifting it but all good! I had to nip out to halfords to get another roll pin as I only had one! While I was there I purchased a pair of Pioneer door speakers - as the door card is off it seemed the right thing to do!! I can now close the door properly although both doors seem to need slamming to close, is this normal? Also having an issue with the door restraint mechanism, it clicked really loud before, so I have removed the drivers side and will order a new pin for it! Ordered new decals as been told these ones are the wrong colour! and I balls'd them up when putting them on!

Another one off the list of things to do!!

Any hints on the doors closing will be gratefully received! Thanks for reading guys!

Its been a while! I managed to get the door back together, but it was still a pig to close, no more vertical play in it. Turns out, if your door seal is not sat correctly in position, the door wont close properly!!!! Took me 6 weeks to realise that was the problem!

The car is now at the body shop getting flat and polished as I was not feeling confident enough to start sanding the paint that I worked so hard to get right!

Its going to be making an appearance at a large show next month, even though its not finished yet!! ;)
