5 GT Turbo Phatty-The Return!

Bruce!!

I remember coming back from a curry night - you were driving it. The bloody noise from that exhaust. Jesus.

Were we in Swindon? I recall having tiny Tim on board...

Christ. After all the work that went into that car and it's been let slide like that. Criminal.

PS, when you hit upload from a mobile device, if you press and hold the image you select, it'll highlight...then if you let go you can select others (multiselect) and bang em all in one post. Saves time! :)

Bit of an update.

Took a trip to see Mark Singer in Chelmsford to pick up an Intergrale style bonnet on Wednesday via a lad near Swindon to pick up a pair of doors that were supposed to be decent. Got them home and they are awful. Glad i only paid £30 and it will teach me to buy bits in the dark. :negative.gif:

The bonnet has a vent which will sit right over the turbo so will help keep temps down when stationery. Means I will probably have to sell the new bonnet but it's what I wanted. :i-m_so_happy.gif:

Been busy today as well. Found a brand new Renault cam belt kit and a water pump that I bought a while back in the shed so fitted it to the std engine to make sure it survives until the turbo lump is ready to go in. Even gave the water pump pulley a coat of paint and replaced the idler pulley with a good second hand one as it's bearings were on the way out.

Next I refitted the alternator mount after getting it tigged up by Gavin Allison as it was another thing the previous owner wrecked. He had the belt running the wrong way round the water pump pulley with the alternator jammed at the bottom of the mount. I also found a spare adjuster rod so fitted that so it's all ready for a new belt tomorrow.
I have a week off so hope to get loads done in between the other things I have planned this week.

20150324_155644.webp Front subframe has been sorted out and rust removed with wire brush attachment on the grinder before painting with my Lidl special smoothrite black paint.
Anti roll bar has also been cleaned up and painted.
I have stripped the balljoints and powerflex bushes from the chrome wishbones and they are currently soaking in the parts washer hoping it will eat the chrome and rust a bit before i blast them tomorrow.

Wish I had taken a pic it was amazing it still worked. I bet it overheated as pump would have been going backwards. Thermostat seal had also disintegrated and was leaking so picking up a new one tomorrow.

A little bit more done this afternoon.
Blaster had little impact on the chrome but it was almost out of grit so it was too fine. Ended up roughing it up with sanding disc on grinder before painting in Lidl Grey smoothrite type paint. Was going to go black on top but actually like the colour so left it as it was. Also did the inserts grey, Subframe side bars in black as well as anti roll bar mounts.
Next was the steering rack. Stripped, cleaned and painted black. I have one almost new and one brand new gaitor to go on and picking up new track rod ends tomorrow. Once my new powerflex anti roll bar bushes arrive it can all be rebuilt. 20150324_155448.webp20150324_155512.webp

Engine also got more attention in between coats of paint on the other parts.
Alternator belt replaced but only 4v not 5v as couldn't get on in the length I needed.

I have also put on a new oil filter.
All that is really left to do is sort a bit of bodged wiring to the rad fan and sensors and the lump is ready to go back in.
Final job of the day was to source a new steering column u/j as mine is the early sort one which are not available new apparently.
£1 plus postage later and its sorted.
The old one shown here is missing large chunks of the rubber and what was left was very soggy.20150324_160928.webp
