5 GT Turbo PH1 Pearl

Happy days!!
First start - which is actually 67'th try, until I found out there was no fuel pump relay in the socket, I do remember vaguely pulling out a shunt form this connector.....

Until..

I got another old turbo on the shelf I will put on, but what it the best turbo upgrade for the standard engine?

I've decided to give painting a try, before paying someone else to do it.
Started with the roof to see if it's possible to get an okay finish, before cracking on with the rest of the car..
Right now i'm totally satisfied! there are a few grains and runs, but nothing the can't be wet sanded and polished away. I will start preparing the the all but straight body.

Did you just make a paint booth out of plastic sheets? Considering having a bash myself.
Yearh, just a primitive tent of masking plastic, it comes in a roll 150x4m .
It’s at great learning experience to paint, and very fun to do. Actually so fun that I’ll paint the roof one more time - Yes, I sanded through.

Back at it, now going full scale.
The roof was not so straight as i've hoped, even after sanding. It has now been blocksanded one more time, and It will be blocksanded one last time before final paint.
The whole car is now in primer, and looking good with that all matte look.

So, got it paintet yesterday. The paint will shrink and sink a bit over the next couple of weeks, when it does I will sand the whole car down and give it a couple of layers more before final sanding and polishing.. But for now, happy days :D

Because I'm lazy at nature, I tried not to make at "tent" inside my garage as I did last time. I amazed how little debris landed on the paint despite of this. I did make some preperations though, as watering the floor and try not to move too much around the dusty bits in the garage.

After 1. paint

Now the hatches and wings are all painted as well, the result is overall "ok". there's more dirt in this than I've hoped for.. But will be great with some work done to it.

In the next post I will be putting the hatches and wings on the car, and attend to the sacking, dirt and runs - and it should also be polished to the final stage...

Short update from Denmark!
After a long hardening time for the paint, I started sanding and polishing it. To begin with it was very frustrating and demotivating because I couldn't remove the sanding marks, it's gotta be a very hard paint! I called a friend for help, and together we found a good recipe to remove the sanding marks = Meguiars M100 and a wool pad..

It looks like a freaking mirror in real life, shame it's so hard to pick up on camera!

But sometimes, you gotta know when to stop, gotta start over on this upper quarter. Not a big diaster, easy to do over, it could have been the roof..

I'm really enjoying this process and learning experience, I know this learning can be applied to my other projects.

Another day of painting..

Almost a shame to paint this new bumper!
1619284292325.webp

Not many of these around in new condition anymore..

Texture, gloss and color camparison. This will work out, it looks great IRL. I bought at total matte finish paint to cover the bumper paint, I'm not gonna use it.

This parts car is slowly but surely becoming the best thing I ever bought for this project. It was totally untampered, so all parts are all there in the right place..

Allright, was just looking through some pictures, and found some pictures I'd like to share. So I'm gonna jump a little bit back in time, before paint to show how I prepared RHD door, this was a bit tricky..

After ajusting the door to match the line at the sill and roof line to my liking, the "center" line did'nt match.. So I had to move it. It took a long time to figure out how to do it, and even longer to do :D

1621075935373.webp

I filled in some fiberglass to circa match the lines
1621076914693.webp

To sand it to "perfection" i made some sanding blocks by sticking on som sandpaper to the contour and sand the block down, then I transferred the sanding paper to the block. It worked okay, until I found out I had to move the soft line a little bit also, and the foamblock did wear a bit, so it's not that reliable..

1621077239895.webp

So I created this, using my parts car as template. Now I could make all contours at once, sticking as much sandpaper on as needed :D

I'm pretty happy with the result!

Pic from the rear looks really nice, it's making a lovely car, congratulations, your hard work is paying off.
Thanks @Turbell , means a lot :)
I’m really satisfied with the result myself.

Had it out for a first drive today, only 4 kilometres though, it was exciting!! A lot of sounds, vibrations and smoke, most due to the exhaust and old tyres I think.

I'm so happy about the red carpet and the gearshift rubber gaiter. The seats are only temporary, I have the original seats but they are not in great condition.
I've bought some BMW E90 seats, if I can make them fit I'll have them re-upholstered with GT turbo trim.

Got some decisions ahead!

Wheels, the steel ones, or the Sparcos? They will be either steel grey, white or gold?
