11 Turbo My new 11 Turbo

I am now back from my holiday and feeling sad that I don't have a garage to keep the car in currently. It's sat on my driveway under a cover and I'm reluctant to get it out knowing the sunroof leaks. I don't want the rusty roof and windscreen surround to get worse!

I spoke to a guy via eBay who has a similar issue and he has a donor 11 with no sunroof that he is literally swapping the roof for! I don't want to go to that extreme! Are there companies out there that will weld a plate in place of the sunroof and remove the rust from the area? I mean, not just weld a plate, but make it look like an original non sunroof car. A coach builder or something I guess..? I would definitely consider buying a base model three door 11 for the headlining and other small items as a donor car. But would it be the right fabric? Or even fabric at all?

Totally the wrong time of year to buy a car like this, but I couldn't hang about when they come up so rarely!

Also, the MOT is due in a month or two and the car is suffering from a rough idle. I'm going to take it to my brother's house, who knows a lot more about old engines than I do, and he's hopefully going to get that sorted. But if he didn't, how would an MOT go? When the choke is off and engine is hot it still wants to cut out all the time.

The guy I bought this from was also into classic car restoration and I'm obviously worried that if he couldn't sort it, how bad is the problem!?

Rough idle could be as simple as giving the idel valve a clear and check for any leaks, adjust idle to run a touch higher might solve

Then usual basics of check plugs, dizzy and leads etc along with vac pipes

Does it run ok with holding some revs

Plenty on here who can help advise and even able to rebuild carb etc if this was at fault....but start with the basics

Sunroof would not be a massive issue to patch, ideally with non roof section to use to keep shape but a good metal working specialist could make one......big issue is heat and not distorting roof and where you need skills of someone like @Mark_L

As for inside would suggest roof lining of non roof version be route of least resistance and cost

For details of colours, trim and well anything else @Big Steve - Raider is you best bet 😉

Thanks for the reply Duncan.

"It has recently developed a fault where it occasionally just won't idle, but then will idle quite fast with a bit of choke. I'm certain it's fuelling so have rebuilt the carb which has made it better but not quite right. Could just be a manifold gasket but I really don't have time! All the major signs are ok though with clean coolant and no overheating. Most of the time though, it will idle ok."

That was part of the advert. I think he was all out of ideas on how to sort it to be honest... It does stay alive using the choke but it is really annoying and the fuel smell is pretty strong!

Changing the roof skin if the preferable option. If you weld a plate in it'll warp the roof as its super thin metal. You can skim filler over it but it will crack sooner or later and will need refilling and painting every 3-5 years based on my experience.

@DaveL485 Agree but taking roofs off scares me, def more up @Mark_L street

In theory you could bond a new section in after a bit of joggling or plate behind join...plenty of 'proper' products that would work. Never tried anything beyond lotus joy mind

As always a few short cut options v the full on method. £ and time always challenge it and guess have to consider future of car and what you will be happy with

Damn. So I would actually need a donor car... Would a five door donor do the job?
Depends on where the skin is attached. Usually you’d need a 3dr skin for a 3dr.

I wouldn’t attempt filling the hole, don’t get me wrong it is possible but it will still slightly distort and need a skim no matter how careful you are.

So... Having not owned an old car for many years I need to ask this question!

I have been away for three weeks and took the car out today. It was turning over alright but I couldn't get it to start. Eventually I ran the battery down and had to jump start it. It still wouldn't go easily until I pumped the accelerator pedal. Then it did fire up and all was good.

Should I be pumping the accelerator from the moment I try to start the car normally? I feel like it might have started if I did that in the beginning...

Sorry lads, I'm just not used to these old cars!

Three pumps of the accelerator to put some fuel into the carb. Choke on, and start it up. 😉

Quick google and dimensions of 3/5 door look the same so maybe same roof is the same and just panels and doors etc different?

Yes the roof skin is the same between the 9 and 11 3,4 and 5 door.

When I needed a new roof lining, the only solution I found, was to fly one back from Turkey…! But that was a MISSION!!

On Wheeler Dealers, they found a place which made a new board for them… wonder if I can find it..?

Pretty sure it was these guys who made the roof board for the Peugeot 106 Rallye in a recent episode...
