21 Turbo My Current 21 In Pictures

This is the 1989 mark 2 longtitudinal one

The earlier silver 1988 one had a similar setup but with the engine transverse. both were 4x4 with three differentials IIRC, and about 430hp @ 2.5bar absolute revving to 8000rpm.

Love that its got 'our' rocker cover.

Would love to learn of its spec

Well it defo had a steel crank, and all the other associated forged stuff, wasted spark ignition and a honking great turbo, throttle bodies and adjustable fuel/ign. I read somewhere the cam was 310° and if you ever heard one idle (at 2000rpm, very roughly) you would absolutely believe it was as well lol.

Superpro rules stated though, that the block and head castings could not be changed so what we can say is that they started with the same base block and head castings we have.....

......but with Renault motorsport R&D facilities and a metric fuckton of cash = 430bhp @ 8000rpm.

Larger capacity engine 2022cc which come from the 88.6mm bore.

I saw what was supposedly a Super Pro/ Super Tourisme head for sale some time ago it head two spark plugs per cylinder.

A lot can go wrong in 12 days......
The pics above were me being hopeful, the reality was the car still needed a downpipe making, some changes to intercooler outlets as turbo position had changed blah blah

Anyway, intercooler was sent off and altered for the price of a bottle of Captain Morgans.....I love the Polish.

Downpipe made, all bolted on and we found it was forcing the vband to gape around the bottom slightly so I had to order a 3" Flexi compensator (sprung bolt donut gasket type) and I could only find these at Jetex.....£75 ouch.

During this time we discovered something quite grim.....a distinct loss of coolant resulted in this (pictured)

After 30mins of sick feeling, we remembered we were still using old filter and maybe it was still full of shit from blow up.
New oil filter, new oil.....try again. The result?

More chicken soup.

Now I'm annoyed and pricing up bits individually to break it thinking 'hmmm ill have enough for a cheap RS6' but its Friday, lock it up.....speak to @stu21t @Craig Righton and @DaveL485 more than once have a think as the engine builder filled my head with 'maybe the head cracked when it went bang'

I spent all Saturday depressed and replaying that sentence in my head then I remembered that when I stripped it I had no mayo in rad, water pump, coolant hoses, bottle etc
Only in turbo feed and return, oil cooler lines and sump, coupled with the fact it idled, ran and started very well it couldnt be a cracked head.....
Monday morning engine builder still sure its head related but I point out that the water is contaminating the oil and not the other way as my bottle is abs fine.
Further chats with Dave and Craig leave me with some bits to check.....1st is liner seals, pressurise coolant system, remove sump plug and no water coming out just my hoses are bulging - great news!!

All along Craig said I bet its oil cooler.....
Wednesday I dropped 3 oil coolers off and its cured the problem, no mixing, cars not smoking etc etc

Over the moon!!!

Today my gold plated exhaust clamp turned up and tomorrow I drive her home.

Oh nice, thankfully this wasnt clogged, in fact it was the opposite lol

I've just had a phone call telling me to tax it. I got the train to work this morning in anticipation of that call :)

Well after 2 Post Office visits and 3 failed online attempts I finally got some tax, apparently I had been SORN for too long to tax online and when coming off SORN you now need to present all documents or no tax.

Anyway I drove it home yesterday........7 months stricken covered in coolant and Belgian leaves and flies the stealthy phoenix has risen once more.

Tonight it gets snow foamed and driven to Brands Hatch tomorrow for the Historic Festival.
