Twingo John's £150 Twingo Extreme Trackday Project

Next episode up, fitting Germany's finest* coilovers to the budget trackday car

Honestly having never driven on more expensive options, these feel absolutely fine for the cost. I'm sure the extra adjustabilty of Bilsteins/BC's etc would be nice, but for 3-6x the price...

How does it compare to original?

Certainly much firmer and responsive on turn in. Ride is certainly more stuff but much less body roll. Noise levels increased but given the car is stripped that's probably amplified over normal.

All that said though, considering the absolutely knackered state of the OEM suspension shown in the video (both rear shocks had zero rebound) anything would've been an improvement.

Keep your eyes open for clio 172/182 powerflex bushes on the used forums/ market places, they should help firm it up even more.
Time to get those renaultsport lower arms on too!

My one and only Black Friday purchase turned up today, much shorter length than I mentally expected and also not the connectors I assumed they'd be so we'll see what happens..

The rear ones are very short, they go on the joint between the body and axle. Mine aren't here yet

Took the car out for a quick blast down the back roads now I've got the 20mm spacers on all around (video update soon) and whilst I'm pretty sure the difference is solely in my head it did feel a little more planted going into corners. The initial turn in is still a bit sloppy but hoping future upgrades to wishbones and ARB will soft that out, although unsure if it may also be something with the electric PAS.

Car is filthy though sat on the front lawn which now resembles the Somme after recent weather, actually struggle to drive it off hence the muddy arches and tyres

Also got a Ramair filter arriving soon and some pipework to replace the OEM setup which previous owner somehow cracked in half and is cable tied together and to the manifold...

It may be time to start looking at your alignment settings to adjust the feel of the car. Dialling in some negative camber for mid corner grip and some toe out to gain some nimbleness and eagerness on the turn in. Its a very personal thing suspension though so what works for one, another may not like. The car looks to have a lot of rake (nose down) in the picture too, id look to remove some of that either by dropping the rear, lifting the front or a mixture of both. Would be best to do all this after fitting the 172 wishbones and arb though so you aren't paying for it multiple times. Looking good though and im looking forward to more updates (y)

Yeah it desperately needs alignment given how much has changed and the fact it was stood so long. Just want to get everything done around them first before paying the money to get it sorted.

Definitely need the front raised up more, the back is as low as it will go unless I take the adjusters out which I may well do as they're not used anyway.

I've ran with and without on many of mine, I think I've measured my current ones at 9mm thick.

I've refitted mine as I wanted to raise the whole car so I didn't have too much of an angle on the front wishbones. I then set my front to rear height difference the same as an RS133 cup as a starting point. Do you have camber adjustment on the front?

The upper bolt of the two on bottom of coilovers has a slot in it so I guess that's my camber adjustment....

It definitely didn't drive right when one was further in than the other 😂

That's the badger, I have slotted top holes in mine too, so you can get it all dialled in nicely. You'll feel a massive improvement with it all pointing where you want it (y)

New episode up, becoming @Adey second hand partsmobile slowly

Still in the shed but not fitted:
  • New front discs and pads
  • HEL braided brake lines
  • Ramair cone filter and silicone pipe
  • Crankcase breather filter
Looking at the Oulton Park track days end of Jan/early Feb that are 109/116 quid at the moment as first full day on track with new suspension setup, hopefully can get closer to the 2:30 mark with my low power. My aim on the taster session was 3 mins and I did 2:50 with plenty of action being a mobile chicane and no time to build confidence in corners etc.

Yeah hub nut came off, dont have a hub puller so will see if I can get one unless theres a DIY make your own solution. WIth the hub nut off and copious amounts of whacking it rocks back and forth a few mm at most, rotates fine.

Tangentially related update, finally getting the mud patch that was our front lawn block paved, all dug out and base compacted down now, guys are finishing off Monday so in new year a nice solid base to either work on the Twingo or put the L200 on here and work on it on the old drive.

Doesn't look big here but I reckon the new drive area could fit two Twingos on it..

So in the daylight this looks quite a bit larger than we imagined...

Need to jet wash the existing drive before Monday so can hopefully tie it in as much as possible with a 5+ year gap between the two.
