21 Turbo J605 LGB ...

Car came back today from it’s inspection.
As you would expect from a vehicle restoration company they were pretty thorough.
Pretty much most of the stuff on the list I’m aware of so no major surprises, I’m under no illusion that it’s an old car now and with that comes “old car” issues.

The exterior issues are ok, I have a new bonnet and the car will be sprayed anyway.
The brakes are pretty much new but have light surface corrosion just due to sitting in a lock up, they will be fine after a quick skim.
The drivetrain issues don’t worry me.

The Body / Chassis ...
Both front wings and all doors are getting replaced so all “bolt on” items don’t concern me.
I didn’t know about the front chassis legs. They reckon it’s due to incorrect jacking (not by me) .... you know the rest.
The corrosion on the rear 1/4 panels at boot edges isn’t as bad as it sounds, it’s more very light pitting which hasn’t holed.
The elephant in the room is the sills and the torsion beams mounts. I knew about the mounts as that was the whole reason for the car getting inspected as it was myself that found the hole initially, and at 26 years old I’m not surprised the sills are past it, Iv seen worse.

So all in all nothing massively bad for an early 90s car.

The resto shop did say that it’s in way better condition than most of the 80s and 90s cars that come in and defo a sound car that is worth the effort to save. They were expecting the floors to be rotten so where happy to see they were solid.

Discussing the sills, they have asked me to price the original sills which I know come with the 1/4 panels for the rear, they have said that they can make new sills but it won’t be cheap, also the rear arches are not good so by the time they have fabricated all these sections I may be cheaper buying the genuine items.

Interested in your thoughts.

You just leave my back doors alone 😁

Yeah, totally rotten at the bottoms, I leave abit more on the ground everytime i slam the doors.
I do have 3 mint replacement doors and 1 I still need to collect, I also have a new bonnet that I bought from you years ago for a few quid. Also have replacement wings and side skirts which again were thanks you you many moons ago👌

:) thats a long time ago mate, from my old house wasnt it, I left there in 2005!

Thats par for the course mate and not as bad as some especially considering its lived in Scotland, the land of haggis and rust.

You cant get rear quarters or sills any more.

I'm going to borrow a pair of sills from Dip and have some made as I need some for mine too.

Are the rear quarters easy to unpick and remove do you know ?

When you planning on having the sills done ?... the resto place wants to charge me a fortune to fabricate a set.

I've had my sills made, wasn't bundles of money at all.

Love the Polish, old school metalwork is current to them and 'simple'.

I'd allow it to be copied but I'm guessing you need the lower section? This new panel has been cut sadly. Lewis bastardised it to save BOB.

He gave it me so wouldn't be right to sell it.

Good to see another one getting saved.

I understand what they have said and looked at but be under no illusion - once you start down the rabbit hole there will be other things that only come to light once the car is getting stripped. The thread on MHR can show you how bad they CAN get - and even going in eyes open Haz still found more things that weren't expected. Definitely don't want to put you off but just be aware things can quickly spiral!
I have burnt through all the cash we had estimated it would take to get the car on the road - and it's not even painted yet...

Totally agree .... The place also warned of this aswell and that’s why they refused to give me a quote.
We had a big long chat and it’s not for the faint hearted ...

It'll be cheaper to adapt a similar sill from another model or have something made.

The rear sill section only comes with the complete rear quarter and as ouve said the front sill section comes with the lower half of the a and b pillars. If still available from Renault I'd guess it would work out cheaper to buy another solid 21. Im sure the rear quarter, arch/sill panel was over £400 a side and thats going back years.

Try hunting by part number online if you are hoping to find panels. Its surprising what can turn up. Macbiyel Renault 21 Sol
