gordini atmo wont start??

hope someone can help.
Have a gordini atmo, and when I turn the key, get just the click of solenoid and starter motor wont turn engine.
Engine turns when I rock it and Ive even changed the starter motor for a new unit.
Any ideas?
 
Hi Tarq,

Have you tested the starter off the engine? It could be that the high current elec. feed to the starter is faulty.

The solenoid works from a thin wire, but the starter itself will have a great big thick one!

Important - disconnect from the battery before fiddling with it!

hey Andrew. ok, there is a big thick black wire but that is attached to the earth terminal on the battery! Sounds like that should be attached to the live terminal?
 
I have never started it before, bought it as a non-starter. Previous owner said they last started it about 2 years ago.
 
The big thick wire should be connected to the positive! Just make sure your earth (negative) is connected to the gearbox. Double check before connecting it all up. If you get it wrong there could be a big bang...

Best thing to do is check it out from first principles. Disconnect all leads to the battery. Sort out the positive first - work out where the wiring loom starts, and put that on the positive. Put the heavy cable for the starter on positive.

Check the negative is connected to the gearbox, then connect that wire to the battery.

ALWAYS connect the negative last, and disconnect it first.

All should then be ok!

P.S. you should expect a small spark when you connect it up, but not a HUGE one. If anything starts to smell or get hot, disconnect the negative quickly - but NEVER when the engine's running - you'll blow the alternator.

---- earth on the gearbox (and possibly to an earth post on the front inner wing - not sure about the Gordini atmo as I've never owned one).
 
Thanks Andrew - Yeap, that was the problem.
Moved the cable, and its burst into life :)
Took it round the block and it felt quicker than my turbo.
Next job is the MOT, but not sure whether I want to use it or not, its only done 26k, and the underside is rust free and almost immaculate, be a shame to see it deteriorate.
Ive been using my turbo as a daily run about, on and off, for several years now, and its starting to rot in the usual places, shame.
