Hello All,

I'm trying to identify an engine block in a R5 -2 to see i it has a MAXI engine in it/ 8221 Engine.

Without stripping the engine is there any way to identify one of these engines from the outside as it appears to have no engine number stamped on it!

Thanks in advance

Andy

There wasn't really a maxi engine...
The 8221 was just the different shell, with the options to allow them to run the alloy roof etc in a rally
Everyone thinks the 8221 have lsd.... When most don't as it was an option.....

You can look at the angle of the dissy, the intercooler fitted and the exhaust manifold

After that.... It could have one of the 4 different camshafts available, and the same for lost one, crank and rods

.....

What flavour Maxi are we looking at - Group 4 or Group B, according to page 35 of the Peter Meaney book below...

Classic - Renault 5 Turbo book

...Group B maxi has a stoke of 82 mm

(although the homologation cert says stroke for 8221 car is 79 mm - http://turborenault.co.uk/resources/76/)

Standard car is 77 mm. Bores are different also but mention stroke as it may be easier to measure.

As you probably know/can see in the book above, there are loads of visual differences although not to the engine block itself AFAIK - e.g. turbo on the right. Pictures would be nice

Btw... I wouldn't use the meany book as any point of reference....
Most people know he used... Artistic flair......

aye there's a bit of a difference between the homologation cert CC and the capacity given in the book. Who knows why people pay some much for it on Fleabay now. Nobody who reads it I guess

But still, stroke of a maxi should be more than a standard car, so that is something that can be measured without taking the head off (via depth gauge/pencil/whatever)

It's definitely a leading question though - interested to know the story behind the OP

I remember speaking to someone when I had mine and was looking to buy an 8221.. guy had it from new!!!! bought it from a dealer in france...
everything was an option!

alloy roof
1427cc engine
4-1 manifold
185 or 210 kit
lsd
wheels

if you didn't tick anything, you got a 'normal' turbo2 with a chassis number starting VF18221......

most got lucky at got the alloy roof tho, as renault needed to sell them so they could rally them, the rest.... who knows

all I know is... my old one with EFI, at 1397cc made a dam more power than the maxi did!!
