Easily available engine and boxes

In the not too distant future (the spring) ill be looking around for a spare engine and box and was wondering how hard they are to get hold of. Failing this, if they are quite difficult are there any others that will be pretty much a straight swap.

Ive been truddling through the net tonight and have noticed that the PK6-003 Avantime/F4Rt box has exactly the same ratio's as my ph1 PK6-006. Will this fit straight in and are they essentialy the same part just listed different? Ifso, it might be alot easier to find a box for my car. Ive also noticed that the Espace and Vel Satis carries a 3.5 V6 compared to our typical 3.0. Would this be a cheap and easy way to gain a fair few cc's or are they different engines all together?

Any help will be much appreiciated

the gearbox mate is just the same as a Renault Master van so i'm told so they should be ten a penny to get hold of unless i'm mistaken

Yeah this is what made me look into it but the ratios are different in many of them. From what i found out anyway. Dont get me wrong, if i wanted mine to be more of a track car, I'd probably stick a really short box in.

The main reason Im looking into other models is because Ive been helping my best mate build a 205 Gti with a 2.1 Turbo engine. Many of the parts are robbed from other standard Peugeot's. The block is a not too special XU, but because we knew there are Cast iron types availabe and cast blocks are inherently better to turbocharge, we bored one of those out instead. Cheap as chips but hugely effective. If it was the same situation with renault, things could be really simple.

have u got your heart set on tuning a v6 for track?? Or would you like to do something like your mates 205??

My mate 205 is as track speced as they come so I want mine completly the opposite. I want it to feel and drive like something thats come out of the factory but goes a fair bit quicker.

This is my thinking so far (Im no Renault expert so please point out any obviouse faults)

Engine wise,

Either a Ph1 or 2 3.0 block with one off forged low compression piston OR a 3.5 block from a Vel Satis/Espace with again Forged pistons.
Not too sure about rods yet but if they are to be left standard ARP bolts will be fitted
Ph1 or 2 Heads with cleaned up ports and adjustable Vernier pullies.

Gearbox wise it'll be a reconditioned PK6-006 from a PH1 clio or a PK6-003 from an Avantime/F4Rt if they are Identicle and fit.
Ill also fit an uprated clutch if i can find one.

On the turbo front, I'll be fabricating my own manifolds to accept 2 KO4 turbos or something smaller from the Garret GT range.
The down pipes to the silencer will be fitted with sports cats and made to allow a standard silencer to be fitted.(Although a standard one wont be fitted)

Im only looking for just over 300bhp but am aiming for 350 and no more really.
Cooling wise a charge cooler will be fitted

Yeah I see that on there when I bought mine off Piston heads. As nice as that car is, its running a standard engine and c/r so i'd only end up building up another motor for it. I'd much rather have an engine that is built for 10-15psi of boost than constantly worrying about it. Must say though, that does look like a good little install.

Sounds sensible to me and you seem to undrstand that turbos need lower compression.

Ive a spare engine and box you never know when it may come in handy also have a brandnew set of Mk1 heads.

Cams are different in mk1 and mk2 engines though other then that there the same.

Good luck put the threed in Special Projects though

Yeah will deffinatly post it in the Project section once I get an engine and start making the manifolds etc. Just got to get it back from the body shop now

there's a mk2 255 engine and box sat at specialist breakers right now! should be able to get it for around "£1500"

I think its now incomplete, plemun, inlet and injectors missing I belive

After a bit of research and a chat to Scott, it turns out that they aren't so hard to come by. However, I'm definatly going to have a gander at the 3.5 block and see what the main differences are. It could turn out to be a cheap route for a strocked engine....as for now, after spending 3 grand of my own cash sorting the bodywork out, this will have to wait for a few months now.

If the engine is essentially the same as the Laguna V6, save for some tuning and different ancilliaries, perhaps taking a Laguna short engine and rebuilding that as low compression could be a lower cost and an easier option to achieve forced induction. Then heads and ancilliaries could be swapped over etc. during installation.

Just an idea ...
