Cheap yet effective performance upgrades

C

cbr

As the title suggests what are the best upgrades to improve performance on a budget?

What kind of increase in horsepower can you expect from them?

Need to try and retain some reliability too............................. Is that possible??? :D

How budget?

?50 or ?500?

I was looking at the cheaoest and most effective mods, Best performance per pound kind of thing.

Like Induction kits and exhausts, simple bolt on mods that can make a difference without requiring an engine rebuild and can be done by a novice

What do you reckon Dave, You seem to be the oracle on all things Reno :)

Exhaust, induction kit, good plugs, bleed valve, new bottom intercooler, fuel pressure regulator.

What does the Bleed valve do? and how much do they cost? Same with the Bottom intercooler?

Does a Dump Valve make much difference?

right here we go i have a wife 2 kids and a doberman to feed etc so as u can imagine my buget is next to bugger all

bleed valve bought off of ebay for ?3.00
(used to bounce the boost up major change in performance 12psi - 18psi )

stainless straight thru back box ?40.00 of ebay
(then removed the other rear box from infont of the rear wheel on the passenger side of the car and hay presto a striaght thru system again big change in performance as it alows the exhaust gases to clear the cars system quicker) OOOO AND IT SOUNDS NICE LMAO

k&N induction kit not the best on the market by far but heh on a budget as i said ?65.00 off ebay ( as u might have guest i use ebay a lot LOL)

last but not least cossie front mount intercooler again not the best but for ?30.00 who's gonna moan

all of the above are easy to fit although i had some help with the exhaust from steve AKA baldrick

my latest additions to the car are volvo injectors which i got out of my yard so u can get erm from a scrappy if u can be arsed lookin about or again they do apear on ebay from time to time
and an evo bonnet scoop again off ebay ?25.00 (bought to improve the cooling and air flow in the engine bay O and to make it lok nice from the outside

Cheers for the reply mate

So, Bleed valve first off then the zorst and induction kit

Is a bleed valve and In-car adjustable boost the same thing?

I'm planning a trip to Prima once I've sorted the car.

Does anybody know what size bore you need the T-piece to be for a dump valve?

1)Steer clear of FSE power boost valves.
2)Dont pikey the exhaust, get a stainless system and box minimum 2 1/2 inch either second hand or made by a fabricators.
3)Stay away from the K+N filters, theyre shite. In fact stay away from anything listed for the 21T unless its the green cotton washable one, stick to big fat cossie stuff or similar.
4)You don't need a T-piece to fit a dump valve, the car already has a similar thing fitted, it recirculates the charge back through the turbo. By fitting a DV you actually reduce efficiency, but we all do it cos it sounds ace :D
5)Once its breathing better turn the boost up. Fit a reliable gauge BEFORE you turn it up and dont go over 17psi if you wanna stay reliable. Connect the gauge to the manifold feed and leave the dash gauge for the plenum reading, it makes for some interesting learning watching the differences between the 2.

Once you got a decent filter, zorst and more boost THEN come back and ask about more if you wish but this is the basic start for the 21T before intercoolers (nb. cossie ones are a waste of time and money), injectors or any of that- No point in doing it until you have the basics.

Oh, make sure your intercoolers and pipes are all intact and not leaking. Remove pipes to check them, and remove intercoolers and fill them with water to detect leaks.
Make sure you dry them out before refitting :P

Cheers for that Dave

Thank god your local :D

First job has to be a dump valve, I've never owned a Turbo car before and the DV is a must :)

Are all "greens" filter cotton washable? Prima do an Induction kit but theres no mention of it being washable

If its the green (thats the brand name) one yes it is. I Think thats the one prima sell.

get thier twin piston Dump valve while you're there, unless you can find it cheaper elsewhere. Its the first on I ever bought for my 21T and in 8 years I havent found one that sounds better.
Come have a listen to mine if you dont believe me.

one more thing, Take the dampening canister out of the wastegate actuator line, you get some horny chatter along with the dump valve.

Class advice mate cheers

Only thing is I dont know where the Wastegate actuator line is let alone the dampening cannister

I've got a lot to learn matey :)

Will any DV fit? same with the bleed valve can you use any?

Where are the best tuning shops in the Midlands Dave?

GLODGA.jpg

What's the pipe connector on the top of the DV for???

Hi mate,

Im not being funny, but I have written you a full reply.....and will gladly post it. But I think you've had a lot of help thus far, for a non member. Its a small fee is ?20 for the info you'll get from this club.......

I hope and am sure you understand my position on this

I'll help you for free matey :D

For a start you wouldn't go wrong by taking a couple of hours to come over for a cuppa and a chat. Steer clear of any 'tuning' stores in the midlands, theyre all rubbish. Nearest ones are stoke on trent and nottingham, although even they are only good for buying pre-made bits from. Without sounding like im trumpet blowing, the only decent tuning places in the midlands are Renault Coventry (Me) and Renault Coalville (Roger).

Drop round and i'll show ya where it all goes.

Oh, yes, dump valves are universal, but you need really to get a good strong one preferably piston type. Itll fit straight in no mods or cutting of pipes.

Sorry, i meant to say 'only decent 21 Turbo tuning places in the midlands....'

I Could upset a lot of people with a comment in error like that  LOL

I wish you had spoke up 5 minutes ago Dave, I'm a member now :D

Honestly guy's I don't mind joining, It all helps to keep the club going at the end of the day

I'll take you up on the offer of a cuppa Dave, definately :)

I'm collecting the 21 on Thursday/Friday all being well, It failed it's MOT Wednesday on a cracked rear spring and a crap handbrake, The garage have ordered the new springs but because of the bank holiday they won't get them until Tuesday :( I can't wait much longer I'm driving my brothers Carina E at the moment and it's like piloting a bowl of porridge with a gearbox  Not the most entertaining car.

I've got a DV off Ebay (the same as the one in the pic I posted) for ?25, It's a Group A DV from Demon Tweaks, I hope it's ok and gives the desired sound :)

Can I use any Bleed Valve or are they vehicle dependant?

Also bidding on a performance air filter so fingers crossed on that matey

Cheers to all for the replies, as you've probably guess I know less than Feck all about 21 engines or Turbo engines in general so it's all been a great help
