Cheap yet effective performance upgrades

Nice one Dave, I think a trip to Cov is on the cards then :)

Which boost controllers do you rate?

I'm looking at the Apexi AVC-R and the Blitz SCB ID, Both look like very versatile systems and are said to have great control but the Apexi wins hands down in the Bling stakes :D

Another question for you though Dave, Does the ECU have any control over the Turbo? and can the ECU go into a 'Limp home mode' if it senses a fault?

The only boost controller Dave has ever fitted is........HIS SHOES........

I control all my boost straight from the actuator, if I feel like turning the boost up I wind the rod in on the actuator.
Ok I might not have driver friendly adjustability, but then im not putting all my trust into 3quids worth of brass either

Ive had one undo itself before now :(

Ok for a start 'limp home mode' on the 21Turbo is normally at best a fooked headgasket or at worst a split liner.....the ECU isnt that advanced lol
If ur in limp home mode, then you really are 'limping home' :)

Craig and Matty Cunningham on here are the only people I know that ever used one....in many ways they great cos you can stagger the boost in a lower gear to give you grip....but I cant see them being much different from Rogers old trick of running a switch in line with the amal valve, basically earthing the amal valve out......so it goes from std 13.2psi to approx 17psi  all for the price of wire and a rocker switch

I think this is gonna be moved to technical problems and solutions now mate :)

That's kinda nice to know :?

You lost me at Amal Valve mate   Is 17psi not dangerous? What would you need to uprate to run that kinda boost reliably or should I say safely? :D

Thanks matey

Along with the Cosworth and the 200SX (and prob loads more) the 21Turbo has an Amal valve fitted, basically I think Roger best describes it as 'an electronic bleed valve'.
To give you an idea, without the amal valve fitted, the car runs 7psi, plug it in and you got 13.2psi as standard. So if you ask Roger to earth it out on a switch, you end up with a nice jump to 17psi

Safe boost IN MY 4-5 YEAR OLD AND EXPERIMENTED OPINION (NOT THE CLUBS) is 19psi....but having said that I ran 21psi for 2 years with no trouble, on a completely STANDARD car. Probably more luck than judgement...the only thing I actually changed is the Actuator....I opted for one with a 20pound spring in it, so I cant run anymore than 20-22psi.

Having said all this ive known cars go bang running standard boost, with a car 15yrs old its all down to condition of all components, oil used, fuel used, plugs everything matters.

As with anything turbo'd the hgher octane fuel the better - within reason (dont use 130RON as I once did lol)
Oil, im not gonna go there it creates too many arguements but a good good Semi Synthetic or Motorsport grade Fully Synthetic, Mobil 1 is too thin when cold (cue arguements lol)
Plugs, NGK BP7EFVX Platinums......them and only them, unless ur buying Denso Iridiums.

As for upgrading stuff, theres a member round here who's split more bottom intercoolers than ive watched porn......and I dont quite know how, ive never had one go yet. Although ive now gone front mount, and its doing a very very fine job

Good luck mate

Cheers for that mate, a very informative post.

Do you run standard 'Super' Unleaded then?

Do you think the Amal Valve is a better way to increase boost than a bleed valve?

How much are the Denso plugs? I take it the NGK ones listed on Prima are the BP7EFVX's for ?35

Thanks again matey

I think the only member running Densos is Stuart Harrington and he paid ?45 per set for em....Halfords sell NGK's for ?28 but I think I can get em for ?14.48+vat and a bit of post to ur door

Amazing what Prima make init?

I run standard super unleaded yes mate

And most people run both a bleed valve and the amal valve, the amal valve is there for the ECU to talk to etc etc.....thats the boring bit im not ashamed to admit I dont understand
I dont use an amal valve at the moment, but after several chats with Roger, I think I need to go back to one

No problems man, its what we here for
