5 GT Turbo CGB uprated head gasket set and bolts, any good?

Hi all,

unfortunately due to my lack of experience/negligence although I did check (maybe not thorough enough) on the tungy 5 I recently bought, I believe the head gasket has gone. :negative.gif: On the day I bought it I did check for 'mayo' on underside of cap and it honestly didnt really smoke on the whole journey home. But checking it over today I had some pretty obvious signs of it going ; mayo under cap & white smoke from exhaust. Everything else seems to be fine, runs up to temperature nicely and fan cuts in no problems at all.

I'm more annoyed at myself for not recognising the signs than bothered about having it sorted because as I say i'm keeping it for good now, so when its done its done! I'm not driving it at the moment so at least I can get the money together and get it done properly.
Which brings me onto this - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/390124007354?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2648&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT - looking through i've found this head gasket set with bolts and just wondered if anybody else has tried it out, or tested another they would reccomend at all?

Thanks for the help, (please dont rip me too much lol)

Ash

Got some better pics today as well

If it is the headgasket, buy the top-end gasket set (or just the headgasket) from GSF to help save some moolah. Bolts can be sourced for pennies from a local hardware shop (M10x100, 12.9 tensile, allen key head).

Does the engine sound like it's running on 3 when you first start it? Does the top rad' hose go hard when engine warmed up? Are you losing coolant?

Could just be condensation...

From my ear engine sounds normal and i didnt check top rad hose (I'm unaware of what that would check for?), i'm not loosing any coolant that im aware of either, but i left it running to warm up as I havent started it in about 5 days but left it a good 30/40mins to get to temperature because i wanted to make sure the fan was definitely working, and the whole time the exhaust was dripping liquid, and puffing out near pure white smoke constantly.

And to make it worse I had my old man stood behind me laughing saying 'AND IT BEGINS, I TOLD YOU IT WOULD HAPPEN' haha :ireful2.gif::negative.gif:

That doesnt mean head gasket. It will puff white smoke on cold days like these, and the water dripping from the exhaust is more likely condensation. Exhaust fumes contain water in a gaseous form, the cold exhaust condenses it and the cold air as it exits condenses it too...like your breath shows foggy in the cold.

Key signs the HG has gone:
-Misfire on cold start, clearing after a few seconds
-One spark plug is a different colour to the other 3
-Oil in water or water in oil, or expansion tank smells like exhaust gas
-Losing water with no external leaks
-Run the engine at fast idle with the expansion tank cap off. Does the water level rise? Do you get a lot of bubbles coming up to the surface of the water?
-Mayo under the rocker cap, but only when there is a LOT, like, you can squodge your finger into it.

I'd ignore the condensation from the exhaust unless it's putting out clouds of smoke and is very obviously not right.

White smoke is normal in these cold conditons, as said above just steam, hot gasses meeting cold air. All cars do it.

If its not using any coolant leave it be. A decent run will get rid of your condensation under the oil cap, these engines suffer from it. Compression test it if needs be but i bet it is fine.

I'll get one in the next couple of days, can I post vids straight on here or will I have to link to youtube?
Link to youtube.

@Clarkey I used to do the hose squeeze test but it just made me paranoid. The cooling system is designed to be pressurised ("Pressurised pump assisted thermosyphon") and the expansion tank cap has a relief valve that blows off at a preset pressure (depending on colour of cap), so I figured that if the cooling system was pressurising enough to pop the relief valve (and cause it to boil over) then i'd worry, otherwise i'd save myself the burned fingers of squeezing the rad pipes lol!

All good advice as ever... TR...
My 2 pence is outstanding....................:-)
I've had all these sounds and bangs etc but sometimes it can be a simple thing .......
The head gasket isn't hard a couple of hours, the eBay parts are good if with a little too much profit IMO, but not the end of the world,ali-g-renault.webp

Hi all, Got a couple of videos to put up, top radiator hose doesnt feel like its 'pumped up' at all when warm, there was a slight splutter from the engine whilst it was cold but it did clear when warmed up, the smoke is pretty bad from exhaust and smells quite a bit, have videos of smoke on idle, and with a rev when warmed up, did have a vid of it running just after start when cold but its taking ages to upload, may be able to get it on later. will post link to vids shortly

Is the engine temp getting hotter than normal ? Missing at all ?

I would do a sniff test and rule it out. My five used to smoke like that when I hadnt run it.

Engine temp is fine i'd say goes to first line, fan cuts in and doesn't go above it really, it hasnt been driven in over a week really though, maybe that could be a factor in it?
