Well as usuall not much has been done on the car. However I've done alot more in depth planning. I've spent hours and hours drawing scale blue prints of the car along with the engine and gearbox. This way we will have no nasty suprises when it rolls into the workshop in April. One issue I have been worried about was the drive shaft angles and how far the 01X Getrac gearbox will sit outside the car beyond the bumper. I was recently thinking about fitting a 5 speed box to allow a 100% oem bumper to be fitted but will play buggery with the driveshafts. After doing the drawings and measuring everything 50 times it seems that the stronger 6 speed will be best as it places the driveshaft exactly center to the wheels yet only stick about 35-50mm outside of the bumper. If it wasn't for this, I'd have resprayed the car iceberg and fitted the standard non cut out bumper. I'm not too fussed though as there has always been 2 plans and one of these included the use of a rear diffuser that will hide the 'box and another colour change (not iceberg).
Talking about April, luckily for me, Keith Williams, my mates father, has got in on the project and there is nothing he doesn't know when it comes to engine conversions. He was even trying to talk me into putting a small block chevy in the back like most GT40 replica's. I said I'll stick to the V6!

I need the one on the passenger side that go's close up to the rear window before the engine covers start to go in, I think my wife has skipped mine as it was sat in the back garden, Ive spent hours looking for it but she say's she would'nt have put anything in the skip if looked us full, that says it all, as I seem to be a few bit missing this been the worst thing to lose, cheers john
Well I'm very happy today. Have been looking for a particular model of gearbox since I started this conversion but with no luck finding it. This was a six speed 01E. These are very easy to find in Quattro form but not in 2wd form. Due to that I ended up settling for a 01X 2wd box. Same size and dimentions as the 01E but will only take about 350lb/ft of torque before it breaks. Saying "only", it would work fine on the stock S4 engine but would be getting near the fragile side of things once tweeked. Luckily good old ebay came through yesterday and I have now bought an 01E. This means I will beable to do countless full bore starts with out the worry of splitting it in two. It also let's me pile a fair few more lb of boost on the engine at the same time. Bonus! I think the weakest link in the motor package now is the conrods. However these are safe for between 450-500hp and are easily upgraded with off the shelf parts.

The 01E was fitted to both petrol and diesel models in either fwd or quattro. Both S4 and RS4 used them as standard. Unfortunatly, just finding a diesel 6 speed fwd 01E has proven quite hard. Tracking a petrol 6 speed 01E in fwd only form is nearly impossible as they were only made for a very breif period around 1999/2000 iirc. The later 01X is very easy to come by but the center housing is made of aluminium and the gears are nearly half the width. Unfortunatly the one I've got has diesel gear ratios. I thought it best to go for more strength as a trade off for perfect ratios. 034 Motorsport are pushing 900+hp in their Golf Gti rs using this engine and gearbox setup so I'm confident in its reliability. Luckily Audi still sell the OEM gears for both petrol and diesels so if its a problem, I can change a few for shorter petrol ratios.
Yeah your probably right in the lower gears hence I'd prefere a taller 1st and 2nd to actually have half a chance of putting it down on the road. How many kg's does an S/RS4 weight with out a dog in the boot Jon? It will be interesting to see what its like next to one off the line. As for the top gears, I can't see me doing over 200mph . . . . . YET! Lmao I think it took MRC nearlly 700hp to achieve their 200mph+ run at Brunters.
RS4 weighs 1620kg - not sure whether that's wet or dry though. Fairly lardy back when they were new but not too shabby now when you consider what modern stuff weighs.
I think my RS would take it off the line owing to the four wheel drive. But after that I reckon it'd show me a clean pair of heels. A 550-600 RS and yours would be an evenly matched contest I'd say. Can't see that anybody's gutted an RS4 yet a la BTCC volvo. That would get rid of a HUGE amount of weight and would make things extremely interesting!
Realise the 200mph was tongue very firmly in cheek but I think the main problem with the vee and high, high speed will be aerodynamics. The vee is about as far away from an aerodynamic shape as you can get what with it's blunt front end! Added to this the very light front end and you're gonna need super big balls. I'm twitching at xxxmph when the steering does that weird light flighty thing.
