Clio Campus 172 build

Me and @Martin_172 got a good run at the Campus today, with the aim of getting the interior swapped.

Neither of us have had a late Ph2 apart, so we weren't certain of the differences. However, if push came to shove, I had the complete 172 in boxes in the garage. The interior loom is split into the dash/seat area, both doors and the rear. The connector for the rear section was different, so that had to be swapped. The door looms were different, so they had to be swapped. And the dash loom was due to be swapped. So, in the end..... it was all totally swapped for 172 wiring.

Something that cropped up was heating controls, heater matrix and fan blower unit and what works with what. Due to installing the 172 dash loom and the wiring for climate control being there, the climate heater matrix was fitted. In an ideal situation, I would fit the 172 AC fan unit (in the scuttle) but the Campus does not have the removable section of bulkhead, nor does it have the hole for cabin recirc on the driver's side. My thinking is that the Campus povo fan unit (which will be the same as a 172 Cup I think) will have some functionality. I've done a bit of reading on CS.net and it works the other way. People moving to 172 Cup fan units instead of the massive AC version. So first job tomorrow is to connect the engine loom, plug in the old UCH for the Campus, connect the battery and see what it all does when i turn the ignition on. Fingers crossed. Worst case, I'll get the grinder into the bulkhead or pull the dash and try the manual controller setup.

There were a few areas of surface corrosion on the seat rails. I can't quite figure why tbh. I buffed them back and coated them with hydrate80, hopefully stopping any further deterioration.

All going well tomorrow, I'll have the last of the trim in, carpets in and the 172 Cup seats fitted.

Managed another couple of hours at the car today. I tested the current heater setup with no success, so i connected the 172 fan/AC unit, and still no success.

Next move is to try it again once I have the 172 engine loom in place, as there's maybe a difference between the bulkhead connector/fusebox. I'm not too concerned as I can access everything without going back on myself.

I carried on with the last of the dash/interior, ducting etc. Got the carpets in and 172 Cup seats. Quite happy with the progress, as it was a job I was dreading.

Fitted the OE CD changer too.... for old school vibes! And was given a PB 172 spoiler to tidy up the bootlid.

Made some decent progress over the last week with the Campus. I found a thread on CS.net where it discussed issues with clinate control and getting it to function. Apparently, the sensing fan thats normally up by the interior light has to be in circuit.... which isn't ideal as I never bothered to install the 172 headlining loom. So the dash came back out.

I ended up splitting the loom down and separating the interior light from all the rest of the circuits. The unused sections can get tucked up behind the glove box and I'll mount the climate fan under there too.

It's not quite finished but the interior is 99% there. And another wee plus, I connected the campus uch back up and started the engine. So the interior wiring is doing its job.

Was out earlier today to start on the engine. Removed the Campus wiring loom and disconnected everything which has left the engine sitting prep'd to pull out.

I've also done more reading into the EPAS thing and the DCi racks are shorter in turns than the rest. So I've managed to get one from a breaker, hopefully it arrives tomorrow.

I'd really like to have a rolling Campus Cup before Xmas!

I found this with mine. I unplugged it as it's an annoying whine and found that it 'broke' my heating controls.

Had a pair of hours in the garage yesterday, and with the help of a mate, managed to lift the engine out and sit it on a pallet out the front of the garage.

I'm going to stick as many parts as I can on Gumtree/Marketplace as most of the parts are in good order. Ideal to recover some cash too.

Renbreakers who I got the "DCi" rack from have sent me a Campus rack and are trying to tell me it's the same part. I'm sure it's compatible, but it's not what they listed, and it's no use to me. EBay dispute here we come.

There's still some stripping to be done, ABS etc. And whilst the space is clear, I'll get cleaning and tidy a few bits on the engine bay up.

Ive had a fair run of shifts over the last 10 days which has meant I've not got much done with the Campus.

However, I have ordered and received a set of OE 172 Cup dampers and a pair of TRW track rod kits. I'm sort of at the stage where I need to stop buying bits and get on with the jobs in front of me.

My local scrappy has 3 mk2 dci clios in stock, so I'm planning on a visit on Wednesday to hopefully bring a steering rack home. Fingers crossed.

I popped over to my local U Pull It scrappy today and found the dci they had, fortunately it was placed quite well for access. I borrowed my mates borescope to read the part number on the steering rack, and right enough, it was fitted with the correct rack. 👍

Bit of a tw@t to get off with everything in the engine bay whilst laying in a puddle. But I persevered with it as I've been struggling to source one elsewhere.

Got home, removed the tie rods, cleaned up the moving parts and gave it a smear of grease. Pulled out my TRW rack kit and.... wrong inner threads.

Not sure where I've went wrong as I thought all the Mk2 Clio racks had the same fitment. M12 x 1.0 is what I need, and M14 x 1.5 is what I've received.

In better news, these turned up. There was a bit of a discount on them over the black friday weekend.

After the lack of success with the steering rack, I moved on to removing the brake pipes, ABS etc from the engine bay. Then dropped the subframe. Overall a decent bit of progress made today.

Been quiet on the campus side of things with the run up to Christmas and esp with the weather being so cold.

Received the correct tie rods from autodoc and some new top mounts. Just need to assemble it all and bolt it to the rack. Gave the rack a coat of paint before fitting to the car.

I borrowed an endoscope from a friend to have a peek down the cylinders before getting going with the engine aspect of things. There's definitely some wear visible but nothing that's prompting me to start pulling things apart. The honing is still very visible too.

These 4 pics are the worst of what I could find.

Made a little more progress on the bay over the last few days. For easiness I want the ABS pump, front lines, brake master cyl/booster all in place before moving forward.

The booster was in a right state where the brake fluid had eaten the paint and then rust had set in. Gave it a buff back and treated it with hydrate 80 then brushed on some black hammerite. I done the same with the ABS bracket which was rustier than a rusty thing! They've turned out okay, not great but good enough.

Used some well diluted G101 to degrease the engine bay which came up really well.

I also took delivery of cooksport springs and new upper spring caps to complete the suspension.

Also decided to treat myself to a cup racer Sabelt wheel. Hoping it comes tomorrow 🙏

The cold weather has been putting me off rolling about the garage floor recently but managed a little bit of time on the car this week.

The 172 pedals were in a bad way, alloy was worn away at the edges and corrosion had set in behind them. I toyed with the idea of aftermarket etc but it's not really my bag. Ended up speaking to BTT Motorsport about the OE replicas they once stocked. Turns out they still had a set in stock. Ideal! Drilled the original rivets, sanded the pedals back, coat of black and riveted the new ones on. Ideally could have done with rivets with a bigger flange, but it was what I had.

Also purchased a PMS AC delete kit in nearly new condition. Expecting it to arrive this week.

A job that I could do in the house was assemble the front dampers, so got on with that today. OE 172 Cup dampers, Cooksport springs, Febi top mounts and new OE spring caps.

Today was the last day of my annual leave and managed to spend some of it in the garage.

The later ph2 cars seem to have come from the factory with very little paint in some areas under the bonnet. Especially around the chassis legs/subframe mounts on the nearside. Since everything is stripped, I figured I may as well tidy things up. I had a rattle can of tetrosyl stonechip from another project and I picked up some diamond black from halfords.

Also got the brake servo and pedal assembly back into the car. Feel I've turned a corner where I'm beginning to build things back up, which is good.

Pure Motorsport AC delete kit and PAS delete kit have both arrived too. Nice gear 👌
