Broken down!!!

Hey Guys

As I am waiting for the breakdown people thought I would ask if anyone knows any common faults for breaking down!

Just popped out to get a new sky remote and I'm sat in the car park with the car just turning over, got over a quarter of a tank of petrol.

Got a funny feeling the fuel pump has died, as I can't hear it kick in.

If anyone has any other ideas as to what it might be, I'm all ears.

Thanks

Martin

Sometimes fuses in the back pop out if nudged if you have anything (water bottles cough cough) stored there.

None of the above...

As I was waiting for Green Flag, I tried it again and it started!

So I have no idea what it was, which is a bit of a pain.

Don't you just love French engineering :)

Could have been your immobiliser. This has happened to me in the past. If your red light on your dash is flashing quickly, take your key out and try again. Worked for me.

Happened again last night in traffic, in wembley. Had to push it into a side road.

car just konked out, abs, batt and engine light came on. Went to start it... nothing, wouldnt even turn over, just a click.

Took the engine covers off, let it cool down and it started. Im guessing the side pod fan sensor or relay is not working, that sound plausible?

Checked the relay, swapped it with the air con compressor relay, no joy, even with the sensor bypassed. I am guessing that there is another dependency on when the pod fans come on as the coil side of the relay has 12v either side when the sensor is bypassed meaning no potential difference.

Anyone know the score with the wiring on this? Done a search only for some people to say they have put a switch in for manual control, but no details on how.

To my knowledge the fans would have no part to play in the running of the engine. Maybe it could be a bad earth on the earth strap near the gearbox? It's certainly a strange electrical fault.

I will pull the covers off tomorrow and clean up the earth strap. Can see quite a chunky one under there.

Was fine on the drive home, once it had cooled down and avoided the traffic, so it does seem heat related too

You might try the fuel pump, the main control for this is under the bonnet on the pass side, yep, that little black cover. i seem to remembet it being the centre of the three relays. make a bit of wire up so you can bridge the relay out if needed, the relays do fail and do work loose so the terminal gets green and u/s, try wd40 on the terminals or a fresh relay, also these have been known to suffer from fuelpumpitis, this condition is worse when there is only a small amount of fuel in the tank and it gets hot. try running with at least 3/4 of a tank, this does seem to help. if it is the pump and the do collapse/rot/ sieze/ wear i do have spares and can supply a replacement at alot cheaper price than reno. (see my fuel pump posts).
Please note: changing said pump is not hard but you need the patience of a saint!

Hi Spike

Thanks for the info. I think I had about 1/4 tank left at the time, so the fuel pump theory could be spot on. To make matters worse, I was on a slight incline at the time too.

Full tank of fuel and it broke down again, going to get recovered home as I can't trust it around london as it's an absolute pig to push

Pump the tyres up to 60psi, makes it easy to push!

I know this is a bit late but i had the same problem with mine after it was serviced by SGM it surfaced about two weeks after the service - Random starting probs and it turned out to be that Scott didn't clean the engine earth when it went back in !! He does it as a matter of course now but it was really annoying as it wasn't every time ! Scott had it back in cleaned it up and it has been fine ever since [smilie=yay.gif]

Thought I would post a little update on this one.....

Bought myself one of those Renault CLIP diagnostic interfaces, plugged it in. No OBD fault codes logged, which I expected as I already have a code reader.

Did a computer test on the injection computer and it flagged up 2 errors, which I should of took a screenshot of, but my laptop battery run out :(

Anyway, 2 errors were, Engine speed sensor and Flywheel sensor. When I drilled down into the fault, it said a few things, one was that the signal was incoherant and the other said something about flywheel sensor gap.

I guess the above is pretty much pointing to the fact I need a new flywheel sensor?

Managed to get some screenshots and here they are!

OK

So located the flywheel sensor, went to unplug it from the car, the plug has completely melted and the rubber seal on the end of said plug has melted itself into the end of the crankshaft sensor. Does anyone have any smart ideas on how I can fix the wiring in the car? Do other clio's like the 4 pot ones have similar wiring on them so I can go to a scrappy, lop the wires off and fix them to the loom?

Fixed

The plug is actually is Citroen/Peugeot part. Number 22 D plug. Went to the scrappy, lopped one off of a 206 and voila, shes fixed
