Clio Big Steve’s Clio Williams 2 (World Cup Williams) 🌍

Id bin that brake kit and run oem sized discs with good pads. The larger discs just add unsprung weight, performance increase is negligible
Ah very good point that sir! I kid myself I'm hard on brakes, but Its just not the case.

Just wondering if Clio 172 Hubs can be fitted to Williams arms (with a bit of modification) then I can get more options for Discs & Pads (I believe)

I’ll second that
keep it standard decent pads, maybe a quality drill disc , took off some weird and wonderful set ups in my time but always return to standard , lsd in the box is a good shout ,

Hmmm… maybe that’s the way to go then, as you and @Brigsy suggest?

Rather than mess about with bigger brakes and swapping stuff, just stick with the original stuff and get some good quality discs and pads..??

Must admit, when you think about it, the bigger brakes on the Clio 1*2 are there to stop the greater mass of that car..

Thanks chaps.

Whipped the Nearside driveshaft out this evening, and everything came out easily enough:

As I’m stripping the car down, I’m keeping my eyes peeled for further signs of rust and saw the offside headlight area looked a bit grotty:

So pulled off the offside wing and was greeted by a lot of rust, but thankfully it’s all just on the surface and passes the old screwdriver poke test! 🪛

Would still say this car is in pretty good condition considering it’s age/mileage/history. Nothings scaring me off as yet..!

Someone asked me to find some of the TXi discs recently (for an actual R21 too), and i'm pretty good at tracking down parts... I only found one set available (which he bought). Here is the parts x-ref, the ones I found were BRECO BS8020.

Now this one is going to be VERY difficult for me to say no to, as it’s made a massive difference to how my Clio 182 drives and I’ll never forget @Adey saying it’s the most sorted Clio 182 he’s ever driven with the Diff..
I had a drive in a 180 bhp Williams with a diff , if your after smiles per mile it’s the way to go

Go chop the front off that shell if it’s really good make a really nice repair

after driving yours, and its still my favourite one, id take it over any of mine I've had or any others ive driven. (it'd be awesome with a SC btw)

Swiped a full set of Ferodo DS2500 pads and front drilled/grooved discs off a chap off Facebook Marketplace for less than half price:

So that’s made the decision for me on what I’m going to do with the braking system. 👍

Plan is to whip the engine and gearbox out tomorrow, will report back 🔧⚙️

Boshed it out this morning in a few minutes:

Engine looks in fairly good order, albeit a bit greasy & dirty:

Whipped the gearbox off, and was greeted by an unknown clutch:

With plenty of meat on it, but missing a small spring:

Soon got the engine onto the stand:

Engine bay needs some serious loving though 🤢

Plenty for me to go at now… 😏

Try and find a rust free front end . They unpick really well , take it back to the strut towers . It slots in like and old c90 tape , all welds hidden under sealer , and will look totally original. Just how you like it

Hmm.. this is a good point.. to be fair the front end isn’t TOO bad overall, the worst is the offside front corner. You can see the rusty hole at the front 🕳️ but the rot’s also galloping up the inner arch also..

Trouble would be finding a rust free replacement panel…

Definitely a fun shape to recreat but doable in smaller sections 👍

Doner section def saves a load of time if you can get on👍

Wish I had cut all the sections out the donor 5 I got cut my windscreen cradle from 🙄

Got directed to a rather fantastic French company who sell all sorts of goodies for MK1 Clio Valver/Williams cars, and even a load of parts to make them Groupe N or A compliant…:

Didn’t take long for me to start putting things into a basket, and my first order arrived today. Although the Taxman took his 20%, 😪 I’m still SUPER chuffed with the fact I managed to grab a set of the Bilstein B6 shocks that seem to be no longer be available on their website.. AND they shipped to me in the UK!! 🇬🇧
23F66A3A-8561-42FF-A620-BA4DDC3CD9B5.webp
Also picked up:
  • Full OE Replica coolant set in the correct black rubber design (no glossy Silicone here)
  • New reproduction O/S front arch/bumper splash guard
  • 10x heat shield fasteners
  • 4 x Spark Plug insulators
#serviceparts 🤫

Switched out the under headlight trims from the headlights supplied with the car (which didn’t have the manual adjustment function) to a new pair I managed to come by.

Always like to use new headlights on my car rebuilds, as it really brightens up the front of the car:
965A8899-E672-43EA-AAEC-1297BAD67B01.webp
You can see how the new (outer) ones look LOADS brighter 🤩

Next I did a little DIY refurbishment of the starter motor heatshield:
FEB1CF42-5BDB-4E72-86F7-873920213196.webp
With a roll of adhesive backed aluminium:
D0875FCA-D7DB-44E6-8846-485EDEB73643.webp
It doesn’t make it brand new again, but has certainly given it a bit more rigidity and now stopped if fraying any more. 👍👍

I then whipped the oil sump off:
10D89406-48FA-4404-B559-46801BE23277.webp
Thankfully I found no big lumps of metal in the bottom of the sump, so things still looking healthy… (famous last words) 🙄
BEF92A4F-7088-4E0D-9EEE-5688D230DDC5.webp
Then I removed the timing covers:
6E840DCF-303E-4DE8-95FB-701B6FCC1B43.webp
E14ED49B-9982-46BF-A60A-EAC57BC2B726.webp
To show an OE Renault Timing Belt fitted that was still in good condition 👌

It was exactly at this point I was reminded why I always take the engines out when I’m doing work like this:
93221486-16FB-474E-807F-B4AEB8E8533C.webp
Just look at the state of that lot!!! 🤮🤮🤮 It’s near impossible to fix this properly when the engine’s in the car… I want to try & make this engine oil-tight 🙏

Thanks for stopping by 👍

Sadly the diesel clio is no more been badly repaired in its younger days , stood for years and as rotten as and old pear , 5 door as well ,
Great work as always love working on these engines , straight forward , and key ways on pulleys .
