5 GT Turbo Alpine Turbo Project

It’s a 36-1 TTv flywheel, and the map has been done to suit. I will have a little play with it tomorrow, and see if the crank senor is picking up, I don’t understand the intermittent fuel pump priming either

fuel pump my also be being triggered by the ecu seeing the engine turning, depends how its been set up

No I believe it primes initially for 2 secs on ignition without engine turnover, but it might need engine turnover to trigger the pump on start. I will check some simple things tomorrow, CPS distance from flywheel just in case it’s not picking up and check relays etc. Thanks for your help

Thats always my first check - it the ECU showing RPM on crank. If not then you wont get a spark as the ECU wont see the engine turning. Also you need to make sure the BTDC angle is set right, or it'll be out of sync... so TTV should have given you the engle that the flywheel reset point is before top dead centre.

Think it’s set at 30deg before tdc as they had made another flywheel so knew the BTDC angle as the CPS is mounted in the same place

Was told the easiest way to check the pick up from the CPS was to wire two small lights from the coil common live from centre and earth to the signal o pits either side and on cranking they should flicker, tried this and nothing, one thing that did come to light is the ecu only had live for 2 secs the same as the pump when priming, so not sure what gives the constant live on turn over and start, I assume it must detect rotation from CPS?

That doesnt sound like enough....most of the ones I work with are 90° - might want to check that out.

Yes I agree, looking at the old flywheel It looks more like 130deg, I have he old flywheel and will measure with an angle finder, but that should make a difference to just checking for spark would it?

Does it still have a dizzy? If its firing the spark at the wrong time it would. If its coils/wasted spark no it should still spark/read rpm

No Dizzy, apparently first thing is to check if Stat Sync is switched on on the ecu, otherwise it will never spark, then timing error is set to zero. Then it can be adjusted to suit the BTDC that is required however it should still present a pulse for spark irrelevant of where the BTDC is set but naturally wont'trun. I will check this tonight

Almost the only thing that isn’t new on this car is the starter motor, and guess what packed in cranking it over, took a while to get here but new starter on ready for more investigation work to see if we can get a spark

Used to help a mate of mine, who was an independent Renault specialist back in the 80's changing starter motors on 5's were never a favourite of mine, esp. the rear support which was frequently not replaced
Have enjoyed reading through your thread. Definitely something a bit different

Little bit of progress, ecu was loosing power on cranking so that has been resolved, crank position sensor now sending pulse and recording rpm on turnover but still No Stat Sync, so now starting to look like base map issue,
