Adey's 986 Porsche Boxster

I put a K&N and a Scorpion exhaust ( twin three inch tailpipes for extra points ) on my 19 16V, ruined it......big fat hole in the middle, torque, power , no idea, all I know is my Missus used to annulate me in a stock 21 ti, never had it on a Dyno, never mapped it.....nowt.
Whether mapping it would have made a difference, I don't know.
Haven't arsed about with a daily since, but I'm a tight git.....

I've not got much experience with N/A tuning tbh, i've only messed with a couple of M3's really.

E36 M3 3.0 it was decatted when I bought it and seemed a flat bit low down, but wasn't too bad up top, I fitted an induction kit a scorpion backbox to it and then had it chipped, it seemed ok after that, although it did have a dodgy maf, so 1 day it would run really well and the next it would run like crap, I ran it on the dyno a few times and power would range from 270bhp - 315bhp depending on how the car was running that day.

Another E36 M3, I had was completely stock other than a K&N panel filter and that pulled 295bhp on the dyno (repeatable on different days) which was very healthy for a 3.0

E46 M3 (manual) fitted a panel filter and an elbow between the airbox and plenum, the car was smoother but lost a little something in the midrange, removing the elbow fixed that for me.

E46 M3 SMG, first of all I fitted decats and a cat back system, it completely ruined the car, was flat everywhere, just no get up and go at all, so I removed the cat back and refitted the stock system with the decats, this bought it back to life, although it was still a little flat low down.
I ran it for a while with the decats a BMC panel filter and an off the shelf remap, which was fine but still slightly flat low down (when I compared the stock map to the remap nothing was altered below 3000rpm, hence it remained flat low down.

Later I replaced the intake system with velocity stacks, which as the maf was removed, required me to either run alpha N, or switch to the CSL setup (alpha N but with map sensor), which is the route I took. Took me a while to get the map setup (to start with it was well down on power) but worked well enough in the end and sounded awesome (no idea what the final power figure was as I was tweaking it on the road and just left it when it felt good and the ecu / wideband told me it was happy).

I nearly ran out of fuel with it on the way to the ring and the only petrol station we could find, only had 95 E5, I had no option but to put that crap in it and do the last 50 / 60 miles nice and gently, and it REALLY did not like it, even struggled to get upto 70 / 80mph on the motorway, when I got to the ring it was almost empty again, so I filled it with 102 and checked the adaptations before I started it up, the ecu had pulled -3.99° (the max it could pull) timing across all 6 cylinders (usually ran around +3°), so reset them and the car then came back to life.

So in summary, I have very little experience with N/A tuning, I am not really a fan as gains are minimal unless you spend alot of money and the usual bolt on mods (filter, decat, cat back etc) don't really work that well on their own in my experience, it's more for extra noise than extra power.

Oh and fuel can and does make a huge difference, shit fuel is shit fuel.

I always use V-Power or Tesco 99 in anything remotely sporty.

Very good point about the fuel...........
We are all on the bus with this to see how it develops or @Adey 's piggy bank implodes and it goes on hold. It'll be fun either way cos it's not my money
Would be nice to see some real development for not a lot of spend, as I'm a good guy at heart......

Altitude affects power far more than temperature. When I was up in the Alps the NA Ultima reckoned he was 80-100hp short of normal!
roughly 3% for every 1000ft! thats loads

500bhp car would be close to 440bhp at 4000ft

We were at 2478m at the top, thats around 8100ft :) You could really feel it, even in the 21 which is mitigated by the turbo. Cooling was a problem too in the thinner air.

So on Sunday I popped to a mates garage to use his ramp and kit. It was time to fit the H&R lowering springs. They have dropped it quite nicely without decreasing the ride quality on the road. slightly less roll and a touch firmer but hardly noticeable tbh.
Starting at the front it was easy enough, you can compress the springs enough to get them out with just the top mounts undone and the arb links removed, easy job and done in about 1.5hours. Then it was the rears turn....... there is literally no space to work, very little access to the top and it required the whole hub assembly to be removed, all the arms disconnected and brakes off, was an absolute ball ache and took about 4 hours for both sides. I'm very glad I had the garage to do it in as I would have given up doing it on the drive, getting way to old for that.
Drove it to work on Monday and nearly died. The alignment was a million miles out and every wheel was pointing in the wrong direction. Into the garage for alignment at the next available slot. Looking very good now, not too low and hasn't caught the floor or ramps yet. Only small issue was we are out of toe adjustment on the rear hubs due to the lowering, we have dialled it in as much as possible for now. I did manage to find an adjustable set on ebay that should now be on the way to me to dial the rear back out a touch. It turns in very well but very quickly steps out if provoked vs the Boxster's normal balanced and neutral nature so ill be looking to getting it back to factory specs (or as close as i can get it)

So I've only just began to look at the power loss situation in the car. I removed the new K&N filter to feel an oil residue on everything behind it. Decided to give it a wash and run it dry for now. Whipped out the maf sensor and it was equally oily. Gave everything as good a clean as I could and refitted. Really hope this was the cause of my lost power, it would make sense if the maf was reading off. I will likely get a new oem filter in there as I'm not sure if the K&N can be ran without oil on. That said I've ran cars with open unfiltered trumpets in the past with no major issues. I've only given it a quick run around the block and it seems smoother but it could be in my mind. 200+mile run out across Wales tomorrow should highlight any new issues though 👍🏼

What an absolutely awesome Sunday drive had by some friends (a few from here @Spooky @PaulyVenturi @Jezer101) on a run out across south/mid Wales.

We started with an early morning meet up at a Starbucks on the M50 near Ross-on-Wye with a planned route from there towards Raglan Castle then on to the Brecon Beacons, after that it was on towards Lower Brynamman to pick up the A4069 (black mountain pass) then through that on and up to the Elan Valley (plan was to do a lap around the reservoirs)

First casualty straight of the bat was @Jezer101 pulling into starbucks in a cloud of smoke, split turbo oil feed stopped his trip before he started. In true top gear style he was left to fend for himself :D

We picked up another friend near Raglan Castle in his 350z and then on to Brecon. Now in the distance everything looked very white, even though the main roads were all fine. We had some fun on the clear roads and then started to climb to the Brecon visitors centre. Little bit of snow on the ground, great for sliding about on (the e36 M3 was a big fan) but still manageable and we stopped for a break. Unfortunately it was too early for the place to be open so we just made use of the toilets.

Onwards to the black mountain pass, @Spooky took point in his fancy 4wd bmw with sat nav.... it decided to try and take us across the beacons instead of back down the main roads. It got hairy very quickly and i soon found out how bad summer tires are on snowy hills. And so did everyone else 😆 After taking a run up to get over a hump id already slid down (i was back of the pack at this point) i met everyone else stuck trying to climb out of the next dip in the road..... we were queuing to get out but no one could move forward 🤦‍♂️ as we stood around discussing the plan of action and wondering where @Spooky had gone in his 4wd equipped car i watched the 350z suddenly slide after being parked for a while straight into the front of the e36. At this point we decided we should try and turn everything around and head back to the visitor centre. This in itself was a monumental task, the roads barely wide enough for a car, no traction and freezing conditions. It took over an hour to get everyone turned around and back onto some tarmac. The boxster was pants, it took 2 people pushing it, salt under the tires and a towel, @PaulyVenturi in his meg3 rs faired quite well with his LSD. The 911 was surprisingly good, the 350 and the e36 also faired well but the DTC equipped e92 struggled like feck. The saviour of the moment was a towel id thrown in the boot in the morning after chucking it across the windscreen 😄 We got back to the flat but @Spooky was no where to be seen..... We headed back to the visitor centre (which was now open) freezing cold and wet. Coffee and a bite to eat whilst trying to get signal. I managed to get on the wifi which then allowed me to get hold of spooky. He had also gotten stuck, just further down the road but had managed to get out and on his way (y) we agreed to catch up with him at the black mountain view point.

Onwards we went sticking to major roads, i was now on point and following directions to the view point. Up and over the black mountains was great, it was freezing but id taken the top down to appreciate the views. Still following the sat nav on my phone we went up and over, back down and it then told me to turn off onto a single track lane. All the cars following, it started to get deep with snow again and the road was undulating a lot. I could see it going bad again so stopped. Jumped out and started to explain that the phone was telling me to go this way to catch up with spooky, only to be told that we had passed him..... sure enough at the back of the que, there he was 🤦‍♂️by this point we had a delivery van at the back too. I wasn't going forwards, feck that, everyone agreed, make him back up too. About half a mile down a country lane all in reverse 😂

So we were all back out, all heading in the same general direction, we had a little meet up and then continued our run to Elan Valley. Guess what.... more silly back lanes and snow, ffs this was getting silly. Anyway we made it there, more drinks and food and a quick look around. We jumped into the cars ready for a lap. The roads climbed, the views got better and the snow got deeper. I stopped on a slight incline to let a car pass and that was it....... I was stuck going nowhere yet again. 2 defenders came passed, offered assistance to which a friend said "nah don't worry he keeps doing this today, its part of the fun" they bimbled past with no worries at all. Urgh, we got it going up again after sliding backwards till it got tarmac, turned at the first opportunity and headed back down. Half of the group had gone ahead and they soon came back too. With a short tale of some landys pissing themselves telling them about the porsche boxster that was stuck further down but didnt want help as it was fun. We all took a few more pics, had a chat and then decided to call it a day. We wanted a quick 2 hour run home to only be stuck behind a few mobile homes for 40 fucking miles and with no where decent enough for us to pass. Well accept for @Spooky and his flying machine.

All in all an awesome day out with a great bunch of people, I'm more in love with the car than i was and even not being the fastest out there itll hang with most things we were out with, enough to have plenty of fun. We will definitely do it again.

TLDR went out for a planned drive, didn't complete the drive, came home (y)

@andybond I managed to get a few decent ones throughout the day amongst many very poor ones. I should have got the gopro on too for some decent footage but spent more time laughing my ass off or trying not to crash. Next time ill make an effort to get more.

It was an awesome day! The Porker looked spot on, ride height, on the move, great looking thing - its amazing how small it actually is to most things but like you said Ade, you wouldnt tell from being in it, loved the swooping cockpit. Defo needs some wheel/tyre girth, that would set it off a treat.

My nav was spot on, it needed some tweaks to avoid the lanes but otherwise live traffic and camera warnings were all spot on - I blame the individual who took us up to the Breacon visitor stop, I mean who does that knowing full well it had snowed and had not melted away - someone else can lead next time 😂

The xdrive is great for getting away and you can really feel the rear bias when you wind the DSC off or switch it off altogether and as you say, tyres make the difference in those conditions. I think we all did alright but if we ever turn off a main road and enter the top of a lane with any snow/ice - we should stop, back up and stay on the main roads!

There was loads of space to overtake them camper fuckers, that really hacked me off, I even managed to split them up, as the light faded none of them switched their lights on. I even backed them up so you lot could start filtering past, there was so much room - I even "allowed" a Fiesta ST to pass me waiting on you further down the road but that tipped me over the edge and I hit the afterburners 😂

I need a huge run up to make a pass 😅

Honestly didn't even think about snow, I'm not far from the boarder and didn't think there would be any. We didn't see it till we got closer 🤦🏻‍♂️ I'd still do it again for a laugh 🤣

I've got a couple of walkies at home. Will definitely be digging them out for the next run out 👍🏼

Will let more people know next time too if others would like to join
