LR Discovery 4

Well, i never thought i would own one of these for various reasons. But this one came up for sale on a forum (Some of you may have seen it up for sale) i am on and at a very reasonable price - as in i could probably easily double my money if i sold it on. But alas the other really likes it.

Its a 2011 Land Rover Discovery 4 Landmark Edition for its age its a really clean motor and importantly everything on it works just now. Missing a few trims that i need to sort etc, but other than that a good base to start with.

What i did discover after it sitting overnight it was dropped on the front passenger side, whipped the wheel off and extended the air suspension and as suspected a small whole in the airbag (which look original) with the car running it keeps it inflated etc and even at standard height it will hold air over night and not. So onto ebay and bought a pair of Brand new shocks/bags for less than £200 - not a hard job to swap out so they were ordered up and i tackled the def broke one first.

I am under no illusion with the air suspension it may need more work, but the parts are now cheap enough to easily sort - so not put off. Also just to add it has a permanent tow bar but was missing the cowling for the hook up, again this bought and fitted, no before pics but one after, much better i think.

Also to add the amount of muck that came out when i took the inner arch liner off, unreal. Anyway to change the front strut - need ot take all the sues and relay out to stop it leveling while working on it, and i may have broke the relay, still works so tapped it up just now till i get a new one. 3 x 15mm nuts at the top - 1 x 21mm head bolt and 24mm nut. Once dropped enough the 12mm to take the airline out. then just pull the strut out, fitting is reverse.

Anyway - Some Pictures.

And then a final one, anyone in the know what this black cover is on the pipe, i thought it was the AC fill point, but take it off and its open ended.

The black cap is used to ‘vacuum’ the engine oil out rather than draining from the sump with the sump bung, although it still does have this fitted.
I would normally suggest disconnecting the vehicle battery rather than pulling a relay-especially when working on the air suspension.
I would also suggest leaving a door ajar if there is any reason the battery can’t be disconnected as this also inhibits the suspension from changing height 👍
Look forward to some further updates 😀

Cheers Buddy, Yeah found out about the cap, so that saves making a mess underneath. Ah never though of leaving door open. Also anytime i take battery off or even work on a car i always leave a window open.

If you are changing the engine oil yourself I would suggest draining the oil from the sump bung, it just means you obviously have to remove the engine undershield first-but draining this way improves the amount of residual oil being drained-which if you have the time is much more beneficial 👍
You might have noticed on the air suspension height switch in the car has a padlock icon below the lowest setting-if you hold the switch again once in the lowest position it will lock the suspension at the lowest setting and visa versa to return to normal level 👍
I also noticed the obligatory wheel spacers!👀😂

There’s no residual oil left in these when you extract from the top. They’re designed for it, and I’d stick with it personally.

You can actually get a little more out than doing it conventionally via the plug, as the plug isn’t at the bottom of the sump.

I do the dip stick on the Megane, and get more oil out than draining from the sump. When i do the oil change i'll see how much i draw out the tube and then for the first time drop the sump plug, see what remains.

Never got any pics, but today i tackled the driver side for the other air bag. Easy as the passenger side and not as much rubbish come out the arch, after that i gave the car a wash, really need to get a machine over it, its almost like black gold paint from a MK2 Clio, got a nice sparkle in it.

Paint is a good thickness on these and generally comes up really good with a machine over.
When you drop the sump plug, have a look to see if the engine has the secondary turbo oil drain mod done.
Most vehicles have been done by now-but a good inexpensive mod if not done already 👍

Get more oil out of f4r sump with suction pump due to the lip on the sump bolt thread. There is quite a bit of old oil in sump when fully drained via plug.

I’ve owned disco 3S &4s for around 14 years and had no significant problems
Changed oil ever 10k from the sump plug as it gives you the opportunity to have a check under there check the belts have been done
And rear brake pipes
Budget for a compressor and mount as they rot and fall off £150)
Front lower arms and rear uppers
I get rid of my 3 at 193k and had no major problems other than a first for fuel 25to28mpg
You don’t need to take the body off to do things so don’t let the internet people scare you
Disco3.co.uk is an excellent source of info for these

Yeah i have accounted for all things air, already swapped the front 2 bags. so the rears will be next, then i'll either buy a new compressor or refurb current one as a precaution. The thing is, like everything, decent service and should go for a while. Will see what she makes of it over the winter. has daft A/T tyres on the thing which require spacers all round and still rubs at the front. I'm trying to convince her to put normal tyres on and take the spacers off, and get an even better drive.

Yeah for the first oil change i do, i'll drop the guard etc and have a look, need to check for the turbo oil feed mod see if its been done or not.

So not alot been happening with the car, but swapped the other side airbag, no point in taking pics as already done the one side.

But after having a look around the top of the engine i noticed oil, so thought i would get the 3 seals for the inlet throttle body. So decided to tackle that today - whipped the throttle body off, and well, good news bad news. Found out where all the oil has come from - someone ham fisted has managed to either over tighten or just drop and brake the housing where the egr goes in.

so after clearing both egr's that go into the throttle body and cleaning the same on the throttle body i put back together, however as a temp measure decided to plastic weld the part the was broken (Temp fix until i get a replacement) Also cleaned the sensor that was absolutely caked in carbon.

So if anyone has a used good one, by all means PM me before i go start looking for a new knock off one. Also anyone got a link for decent kits for EGR Blanking. Worst things ever EGR's etc.

Also it came with the roof bars, now i don't have a key for them, but there is a website that can hopefully cut me one with the code on the barrel. So will see how i get on with that. Anyway, some pics.
