5 GT Turbo 5 GT Turbo tuning advice

Hello everyone

I am looking to purchase a phase 2, 5 GT turbo, As far as i am aware the engine is stock other than, S/S Carb Lobster, uprated Alloy Intercooler and air filter with a manual boost controller. I don't want crazy power i just want something relatively quick and reliable.

I was looking at cgbmotorsport's website just out of interest at their turbos where they state the following.

Turbo Technics Stage 2 T2/T25 Turbo

" We find many people purchase the biggest they can afford, rather than buying a turbo which suits there driving style."

63 exhaust housing for upto 200 BHP - full boost at 3500rpm - good 30-100+ mph
.47 exhaust housing for upto 185 BHP - full boost at 3000rpm - good 20-80 mph
.35 exhaust housing for upto 170 BHP - full boost at 2500rpm - good 0-60 mp
h

The above breakdown i found very insightful, 70+ Mph is of no interest to me what so ever as my younger days's of speeding are long gone. Im also not one to race off the lights or from a stand still i would say just a nice feeling of boost and pushed back into your seat action from 20-60 would keep me happy.

What would recommend a good spec to achieve this while keeping the car as reliable as possible?

Kind Regards

Ash.

To be fair it looks sort of easy, there's already a hole to sit the drill in so not like it will slip. Hmm Right ok, is there anything that i can mess up by taking the carb apart? it won't go out of tune or anything? Because my car currently runs mint and i don't want to feck it up lol

I decided to go ahead and get the carb i found for sale and use a another carb top on it as im too scared to drill my current carb lol, It was relativity cheap anyway.

I've ordered some micro drill bits to check what jets are in the carb when i get it.

Thank's everyone

When drilling the 2nd stage jet how do i know how deep to drill? my mirco drill bits are not very deep and what size should i drilling the 2nd stage jet to fuel 14 psi? and will this jet stay the same size if and when i upgrade my turbo to a T2/T25 hybrid?

Ok nothing much to update as of yet still waiting for my carb to arrive, however huge thanks to TubbyG for donating me a spare carb

I wanted to ask you guy's opinion on this turbo it has a .35 exhaust turbine

I don't have an issue with the small crack, i have spoken to various people who's opinion i value who have advised me the crack should be nothing to worry about.

I am just wondering how this compares to this

http://www.cgbmotorsport.net/turbo-technics-stage-2-t2t25-turbo-997-p.asp

I have been in contact with the seller via facebook and hes offered me a price much cheaper than ebay. For the price hes offered even though i might now fit it straight away i think if its a good turbo ill grab it for later use.

Isn't a t25 real laggy? It was the price that intrigued me, i was putting off upgrading the turbo to a later date but i spotted that and thought isit worth just grabbing it as its less then half the price of the ones from cgb.

What would you say the best turbo for standard internals, standard cam, with uprated intercooler and rejetted carb?

okie dokie lol I just has a quick look for a t25 and came across one straight away came off a GTT .

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Renault-5-gt-turbo-T25-28-/201471564768?

T25 turbo with a .49 rear and a -31 actuator
upgraded internals to a T25/28 with a billet wheel for better flow.
made 226bhp and 188lb/ft

What's the deal with the upgraded T25/28 internals? What effects is that likely to have over a standard t25? How much psi would this be able to produce efficiently? ive emailed the seller but would like some other opinions

Im not looking to run anywhere near that power, and at least for the moment :) i don't even have a specific power figure in mind im not chasing numbers But i do know i want to upgrade the turbo to enable be to then run more boost and set the carb up and hopefully fine a good comprise that i am happy with.

If a good turbo comes up for sale like the ones posted then im happy to invest in one but i would appreciate the opinions of some of you knowledgeable people before i pull the trigger.

My two pennies worth is if you are likely to want more power in a month or two you might as well go big early on. Not much point swapping turbos every couple of months. I also wouldn't pay too much attention to random rolling road graphs, there is no guarantee that turbo was actually on the car when that figure was made. I'd go with experienced members of this group who have had known results.

I know Jon Briggs van makes 235hp with a GT2560r.

Hi mark
I'm not sure what the best approach is at the moment as i am unsure of which turbo will suit me best. I still have zero interest in speeds above 70mph and i don't particularly feel comfortable booting it from a standing start in 1st gear. I am after acceleration in 2nd and 3rd gear , 4th and 5th are well into license loosing speeds so i have very little interested there.

What would be the best set up for the most brutal acceleration in 2nd and 3rd gear?

I agree with Mark, personally I would get the bigger one. as once you get used to the mid size turbo you will always crave that little bit more. But then again, everyone is different.
The seller of that particular T25/28 turbo on eBay is a member on here @Clarkey
I believe the advert, as he has been through a few different setups in his quest for victory on the track.
I'm sure he would be happy to answer any queries you may have about it

From that I would say a T2/25 would be ideal. Set the boost to 18-20 psi and you will get lots of enjoyment from that. Quick spool with a decent punch.

That's fair enough mate, makes sense. Good news that that's Clarkeys turbo, at least you know it's legit.
