Hi All,
I have a Type 385 gearbox for a Renault 5 Gordini. Rare as hens' teeth! Apparently in good condition. No photo at the moment.
£400 posted. These are very popular for rear-engine Renault 5 Gordini engine conversions for Renault 8s and the like.

Oh ok - I'm not sure exactly. I have sent several to Australia for @Geckoeng - maybe he can clarify? Ray, what did you use the R5 G gearboxes I sent you for?
I procured another one a while back "just in case". Now wanting to sell it to someone who can use it.

All the rear crossmember and suspension picks up on the gearbox , may use some of the internals but when I was going to do a Gordini turbo engine in an 8 everybody said I had to have the original rebuilt to make it stronger but still only rated to 150ft/lbs so I didn't bother.

Hi Guys,
A genuine "385" is very sort after by the rear engine fraternity !!
You take the R8/R10 "330" gearbox and open it up and throw all the innards away and put the entire '385' internals (5 speed) into the 4 speed casing and the "385" nose onto the new box. And you have a near bullet proof 5 speed box that now goes into a rear engine chassis. It needs to be the "atmo" box and not the "turbo" box as they are very similar, but will not transpose into the "330" casings.

I think the price is a bit high as I have been buying good "385"s at 250-300GBP. The "330" boxes are now getting more difficult to find good casings to do the conversion.

If you look in Technical section, I think under "R8 Gordini Workshop" you see all the information from Steven Swan in Perth Scotland who was a master at building these gearbox conversions. I have one of his boxes about to go into a R16TS powered Alpine A110. And I have 2 boxes sitting in the wings to go into my projects. See my last thread on my building projects for clients.

Gordini box will struggle to cope, not sure it's much different to what you have either. I know from experience that 170 bhp is about the limit but the 182 engine would make a lot less torque than a 'dini turbo engine tuned to 180 bhp (mine was 180 ft/lbs) so you may be ok. Their are bits out there to strengthen them, guy called Steve Swan builds them.

I'm sure the Gordini Turbo box will be much better than a TS box. After all, why would Renault upgrade the 'box for the Gordini and Turbo?
I have plenty of Gordini Turbo 'boxes for sale. Driveshafts too.
If you do go that route, you'll need to fit the dismountable cross-member at the front - involves some cutting and welding. The cross-member makes more room for the 'box, which is longer than a TS 'box.
