21 Turbo 21 Turbo gearbox oil.

What oil do I need for a 2wd 21 Turbo gearbox?
The book says tranself trx 80, but that doesn't give me many results on the Google.
I read about using the Total stuff meant for Peugeots, gear 8 I think it's called. Is that suitable?

Trx isnt readily available. 80w90 is fine. My local motor factors supplied comma ep80w-90 gl-4

So I shouldn't be too worried about trying to get the tranself equivalent, just a reasonable quality GL4 in the right grade will be ok?

I wouldn't, consider how quality of oil has improved since the gearboxes were designed and why the original stuff isn't used anymore

I use 80-90 as well, for 2wd.

Ok, so I did this job a while back now, but just to update the thread.

I used the Total Gear 8 75w80 from GSF. Got three litres for about £13 if I remember correctly, using one of the 57% off discount codes that seem to always be emailed out.

The old stuff wasn't particularly dirty, though there was only about 2 litres in there and there was a little black sludge as it was nearly empty.

What do I remember about the job? What a stupid place to put the filling plug.

I used a long bit of pipe shoved in the hole with a small funnel attached to it, up in the engine bay to pour the new stuff in. Not too challenging.

As always, I checked that I could get the fill plug out before emptying the old oil!

Key point!

I have a square drive tool specifically for that plug, and with it on a 3/8ths ratchet it goes in the 'box leg and undoes that plug just right. I also have a half-litre oil pump to drive the oil in through a pipe from the top and I always put the oil on the radiator in the house the night before so its warm... warm oil is twice as easy to pump in than cold oil! All lessons learned from many, many box oil changes over the years lol
