Before You Start

These are the things you will need:

  • A bung key set and a spanner.
  • A homemade funnel from an old oil tub and an old pressure washer hose (worked quite well).
  • An oil dipstick (green) from Renault. This should be used to check the oil level; it has A, B, and C marks on it (MK2 v6 uses the C mark).
  • 2 new seals:
    • Gearbox sump seal: 7703062062
    • Filling bung seal: 8200201381
  • ELF Tranself TRP 75x-80 oil (sent by clarkiev6 from Carlton Garage).

  1. Drain the Old Oil:Start by draining the old gearbox oil. Allow the oil to drain fully by leaving it for a while. The bung is located under the differential housing part of the gearbox.

  1. Open the Filling Bung:Next, open the filling bung, which is near the front of the box, close to the wheel and earth strap. It's tricky to get your fingers in there, so use a set of mole grips to open it.

  1. Setup Funnel:Use your homemade funnel to guide the oil into the gearbox. Place it in the engine bay, and allow the hose to trail down to the filling hole.

  1. Refit the Gearbox Drain Plug:Refit the gearbox drain plug and use a new copper washer.
  2. Start Filling:Begin filling the gearbox with ELF Tranself TRP 75x-80 oil and your handy funnel. :)

  1. Check Oil Level:Once you've added approximately 2.3L (2.4L is full on the MK2), check the oil level. Use tool B.vi 1675, which you can insert into the gearbox and locate the tab to check the level.

As mentioned earlier, the oil should be at the C mark for MK2 V6.

  1. Refit the Filling Bung:Once the oil is at the correct level, refit the filling bung with a new seal.
