Seat is nearly fitted. Chap on fb makes the subframes called jfonz. extra low subframes as the seats get very high when bolted up with the usual branded stuff. Still need a few fixings but it's nearly there
not driven it yet but its not too bad. Ive installed it with the oem spacers in place so it could essentially go about another 15mm down if it was bolted to the floor
Started doing a little test fitting. 172 manifold and throttle body are direct fit. Need to check the flywheel and sump now. Would be good if I could do a rewire and run coil on plug over a coil pack too. Will look to the vag boys as i think they do a similar conversion.
Few bits collected from @Jezer101 quick test fit shows that the early f4r cam pulley covers and engine mount fit up to the later engine perfectly so no custom engine mount will be needed here. Assumed it would be the case as a few have fitted the 197 head on the 172 blocks but didn't find it written anywhere.
Im planning on using the whole engine so nothing for me to do with regards to the extra pulley. When putting a 197/meg head on a 172 block you do have to fit an idler to the head though.
Overall the 197 is a better engine, lighter crank better head design and with some tweaks can make nearly 200bhp on a conservative dyno (all engines being different some dont but still higher than a 172) i will reveal the cost of this whole lot once i finish (if) as im doing it as a budget upgrade. I want to get as close to 200bhp with an easy and cheap to do conversion. I have been very lucky with regards to the cost of the engine and bits so far as most i have seen for sale have been asking for nearly 4 times what i have spent and dont come with all the ancillaries.
Left to do is check the sump off a 172 fits, check the 172 flywheel fits and then drill the block for the 172 bellhousing. Then its fitting and mapping. Last job if this all goes to plan is to retime the cams, little thing needed due to the difference in the way the dephasers work between the 2 engines and with me wanting it to work on the stock ecu
Post on page 4 somewhere. I hope it goes really well, is very much a "me" type of build using spares from the scrap pile and utilising everything from Renault. The increase in power from the engine was really hampered by the extra weight of the clio 3 chassis, and with people thinking the same and swapping out for the Meg engine these should become more popular and available. A 197 in a 5 chassis would be a weapon too and if it'll fit in the clio it will go in that exactly the same...
Fair point, drop the Quattro as that is a chunk of fabrication and easy option would be 1.8 20vt on 5 speed box as that has been done or go tfsi which is also fairly straight forward. Manual box, retain oem ecu job done
I have a spare k03 setup on bam bottom end and full setup coming out soon
Going crazy and while close to buying an old vx220 back to put my RS3 / DSG in is 100% going ahead 183kg of 5 pot German muscle with 70kg box in the boot..........mmmnnnnn
