Clio 197 engine swap into 1 of the 33 Silver 172 Cup's

Is this cos the 172 is a one-hit phase of the cam on-off, and the 197 is variable phasing with a PWM valve as opposed to the on-off like the 172?

Exactly that. I think the setting i have been told to use will be the same as if you straight fitted the 197 cams in the 172 head.

They already idle bad id put money on it being really shit with the cam locked in 1 position. Would probably be crap driving below 2k as well. that on top of needing a pulley to replace the dephaser with too adds unnecessary machine work. Re timing the cams is the easier option.

Who drives under 2krpm?

everyone does you muppet, what revs are you doing when travelling less than 30mph in traffic?

I'm in 3 or 4th gear at 30mph. Anything except going downhill i stay above 2krpm. I don't think any car i have driven except for a diesel likes to be below 2krpm. Even the Rover diesel didn't like being below 1800rpm!

Pulled the manifolds off to try and give them a clean. Exhaust manifold is now going to be swapped from a 172 to a 182 item on scoffs say so. Just need to drain it of oil somehow then remove the sump. Normally not an issue but the f4r uses the sump as gearbox fixings and thus as it's coming off I can't fix my engine stand to it. Hopefully I can get the sump swapped this weekend and hopefully the gearbox lined up. 20170106_163633.webp 20170106_163638.webp 20170106_165235.webp 20170106_165244.webp 20170106_165255.webp

Might ask around and see if anyone does 197 inlet manifold porting

Few more bits picked up from @Jezer101. Hopefully they will all fit up on the block. Made a bit of a mess with oil getting it off his engine and now need to do the same to mine. Hopefully I can get it bolted up and fully test fitted this weekend 20170107_112604.webp

One jc5 mounted to a 197 f4r engine. Can now mark up the block for drilling the extra fixings. 172 Sump was a direct fit with it even using the same rubber gasket as the 197. Flywheel is also a direct swap on. 2 locating dowels needed removing from the gearbox to allow the gearbox to sit flush with the block. Excuse the mess the garage is a full on shit tip at the moment.

I'm surprised at how much progress you have made!

So a 197 and 1*2 sump gasket are the same?

How do clios not suffer with oil starvation? The pick up is biased to the one side and the sump isn't baffled as standard or anything special to look at.

Exactly the same. I used the 197 gasket as it was newer.
The pick up still sits in the deepest part of the sump and the windage tray (black plastic get thing) I assume helps loads as it will hold oil beneath it when the sump is on.

Clutch fitted on this morning to aid centralisation on the gear box. Drill bit then wrapped in tape to hold it central in the bolt hole bores that I needed to drill. 5 fixings there, could only spot 4 and only drill 3 out. I'm not to worried as it should suffice for holding the box on and stop rotational movement. Luckily the gearbox location holes have a fair bit of slop in them so should easily take up my inaccuracies. Just need to tap the block now. 20170108_114732.webp 20170108_115307.webp

And holes now tapped. Need a clean up but nothing major. I think I can get an extra fixing in there too so will do that in the final assembly stages. Longs this all lines up I'm just left with setting up a timing tool to the correct specs ( I'll bend it to suit) and reset the cams. I'm sure it's then nearly ready for the swap. Never that easy though.....20170108_154130.webp

yeah buddy, 172 gearbox will now fit this later 197 engine (y) and from what i can tell you could do exactly the same with the meg 225 engine

Cheaper clutch and flywheel option? Don't have to run the dual mass if you go JC5? To be fair I liked the Meg with the 6 speed box.
