Whats the deal with leaking petrol tanks really?

I've been to a few scrappys and on nearly all of the 19's I've seen they all have shitty filler pipes / errosion around the tanks neck?

Whats the deal?
 
its metal its exposed, it rusts.

main corrosion areas, the seam where the 2 halves are spot welded together.

The filler stud water gets under the rubber and corrodes it

Top of tank the little screw pin that holds ther wiring/pipe channel in.
 
aye, those little stud things are a bitch. there are several of those on the bottom of the floorpan which the fuel line clips thread onto. all but one of them came away in my hand when I was sorting the underside of mine!
 
Yeah but bloody hell! How long do manufacturers expect the cars to last? 5 years?
