WARNING - RENAULT ILFORD!!

NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER TAKE YOUR VEE TO RENAULT ILFORD!!

A couple of weeks ago I had a another coil go in the engine. I took it back to the above dealers and they diagnosed coil number 2 had gone. While they were fixing this I agreed to a new set of spark plugs. As some of you will have read (on another thread) they broke my breather pipe while fitting these new plugs but wouldn't take responsibility for it. They didn't have a new pipe in the UK so ordered one which was a wait of up to 10 days.
In the meantime I went down to collect a courtesy car and had a chat with the mechanic who told me it wasn't coil number 2 it was number 5 he replaced.

I picked the car up last thursday and this little visit cost me £650. :(
Oh and by the way the dealership had managed to put 21 miles on the clock while it was under their care????!!!!

I only had a couple of miles to drive it home and it was in rush hour traffic all the way so couldn't get to "test" how the car was running as such! It felt "strange" to drive but I put this down to stepping out of a 1.2 courtesy car and in to a vee again.

Last night was the first time going out in since getting it back and I was very surprised to find that they hadn't fixed it at all.
When I start it, I get the engine management light flickering for a while but this stops once you start to drive it. You can clearly hear it is a cylinder down as it sounds like a tractor and you can smell the unburnt petrol.

I phoned them today and told them I think they have changed the wrong coil seeing as they diagnosed 2 and changed 5. They said they were looking at the notes the other day and it did cross there mind that had happened!!!! Yet no phone call to tell me this.

I asked if they test drove the car before giving it back and the answer was: "NO, they only drove it round the dealership carpark/workshop". I then put the question to them: "how did you manage to do 21 miles in my car driving it round the car park??" Answer: "i'll have to have a look at the work sheets maybe they did test drive it but that should have been 5 to 6 miles". My Reply: Well it sounds to me like someone has been out having some fun in my car which I don't appreciate. I am still awaiting a phone call back with an explanation and an answer as to what they are going to do to put the car right. If I call them the manager is "in a meeting all day" and the other muppet is constantly on the phone!!

Another complaint will be going into Renault Customer care today but I would just like to warn everyone that this dealership is an absolute joke. I do not trust them and will do my best never to take my car to them again. They do not take any special care of your car and seem to think they can do what they want with it while it's in their hands.

I am really concerned now as I've heard it should not really be driven with a knackered coil as the unburnt fuel can cause problems with the cat?? Is this true??
I'm so angry that renault have driven it 21 miles if this is the case as I don't want a bill for a new cat from their mistake.

I'm so tempted to take the car back down there and leave in blocking the entrance/exit until they actually fix it!! Surely that will make them pull their finger out their @rse..............!

P.S - Sorry if this is full of spelling mistakes and doesn't make sense! - or I have posted it in the wrong area! Just had to vent my frustration somewhere!! Lol

As you say the 21 miles will have been done with a faulty coil dumping fuel into your cats with potential damage ... So this would probably be another element of negligence on their part if you come to further blows with them.

Determining the faulty coil is a straightforward task so I can't see how the a dilligent Dealer could get it wrong either by mis-diagnosis or poor communication between technicians ...

Really hope you get a good resolution with this ...

Thanks Martin, me too!
I've just complained to customer care and they put my call through the the dealership! They have it booked in tomorrow to sort the coil issue and i've told them to make sure the parts are in stock and I want it back the same day. I'm really not happy about going there again but I don't feel I should have to pay someone else to sort out their mistake!!
They have just confimred that Renaults system shows that they replaced coil number 5 so I just have take with me the quote that shows the problem was diagnosed on 2!

They are playing down the potential issue with the cat saying it's not nesessarily a problem and quote "21 miles doesn't sound like it will do too much damage" and not to jump to conclusions!! Bit hard not to though!

I hope they will check the cat tomorrow. Can some tell me how they would check this? Any questions I should be asking them or what I should look out for??

Thanks!
Lucy

Some info I found ...

<snip>
Often when a coilpack goes, continuing to drive causes a bad egg smell you may notice when getting out of the car. This is not an indication of damage, just the sulphurous byproducts of incomplete combustion and a sign that the poor thing can't catalyse the amount of hydrocarbons thrown at it.

With only one coil pack gone you'd have to give it some, in a short journey to cause cat damage. Only when it gets very hot, as a result of the unburnt fuel, does/can the cat melt. If it suffers thermal shock, like splashing through a puddle in this state it can crack too. Hitting it too hard on a rock too obviously.

What usually happens when a cat breaks up is chunks of the matrix rattle about in the cat. If you get underneath and thump it with the side of your fist and it rattles, then that's a sign of there being loose chunks inside. What can also happen is that one of these chunks can plug the cat outlet, causing severe restriction and lack of power - you'd notice that - engine smooth but no power and possibly a hissing noise.

Sometimes, however, if the cat breaks up completely and disintegrates it can all get blown out of the exhaust with some debris partially restricting the rear silencer. The recovered cat can then be a smooth empty casing - obviously that wouldn't have rattled with the thump test

Cat Testing Information

My advice would be to try and encourage the dealer or Renault to acknowledge/record in writing that the car had been driven with a faulty coil whilst in their custody, and after mis-diagnosing and replacing a working coil, in order that any potential cat failure can be considered with this information in mind. It is entirely possible no damage has been done but some owners have had cat damage as a result of failed coils.

Thanks for that, it was helpful and has put my mind at rest a bit more!

Good idea, I will see if they will acknowledge it as suggested. Everything always feels like a battle with Renault! Lol

Lucy :)

Interestingly I was recounting the tale of your damaged breather pipe to Mike and Dave down at Rentech today. They agreed that they do harden with heat, but that it takes a cack handed muppet to damage them, and that said cack handed muppet should put right rather than trying to shirk blame!

Keep up the pressure Lucy! If the manager is a meeting, then explain that you expect him to call you and agree a time for him to do that. Make sure you ask for the name of everybody you speak to, and make copious notes about when and what was said.

Surprise surprise they deny doing that mileage in it!
They spoke to the mechanic and his manager and he says he only test drove it from Renault East London down the A406 to Redbridge Roundabout and back again. About 5 miles each way.

Either he has done this journey twice or took your route Mark....They say he never drove it up the M11....
I'm inclined to believe he did take it up the M11 though for a blast in the same way he broke the breather pipe and shirked the blame!!

That is absolutly shocking! What aresholes!

Thats a bit strong Deb I know a few aresholes and there allright lol :)

I know a few too Simon... but they're all full of sh!t down this way... [smilie=icon_clown.gif]

Deb... was a bit strong... from such a sweet young lady.. hehehe

Shaun/Simon if you thought Deb's language was strong then I'm glad you didn't hear mine!! ha ha!!!

The sting in the tail was that I took it back to them to check out the coil 2/5 issue and they say that these were fine, they hadn't mixed them up just depends on which way round they count them. It was coil 1 that had gone as well!!!!! Another £110 to put right. I asked for a discount on the labour as in my opinion the mechanic should have known it was still on 5 sylinders when he gave it back. I managed to get £12 off the bill - what an absolute joke hey?!

All the complaints to customer service did nothing apart from get a 20% discount of the next service through Renault.... erm do they think I am mad....? and would actually take the car back to a bunch of incompetent imbeciles???!!!

Anyway I have her back finally and she was running beautifully the other night :-) although she is burried under about 2 feet of snow right now!

Just gotta start saving for the cambelt change!! :-)
