v6 exhausts, potential hearing damage, long post!

the problem is Martin, theres not enough information avaliable really.

There are many ways to add up to 98dB, it could be a combination of the full spectrum, or a specific tonal component which would give the impression it was even louder.

I'd hazard a guess that its related to size. This will effect the frequency produced, larger bore = lower frequency, and as I say, lower frequencies are the problem ones!! They will enter the cabin and not easily escape. Higher frequencys will be absorbed by the seats and lining materials, the lower ones are much harder to get rid off. This would explain why when you put the windows down its not as bad as the low frequency waves can esape without having to go through the glass.

around 2.5-3k that is probably where the system produces its critical frequency.

a bulkhead would in theory definitely help this as the sound would be more likely to be contained in the rear of the car, with equal amounts of energy leaving the windows and probably a slighter larger percentage through the bulkhead. however, with no bulkhead, the whole car would be subject to these conditions.

The standard covers, although are acoustically lined, would probably only attenuate the mid/high frequencys, with probably 1-3dB max at the lower frequency.

of course the only way to quantify if the bulkhead would help is to test with an OMG. However the principle & theory says it will provide a positive reduction.

just what i was thinking i had a droning exhauste so much so that it made you feel sick on a long trip also compounded by a broken header the bulk head makes a lot of difference ask them that have them

Please give me a shout if you'd like to use my car for the QS Sport test. We could take this further too.. Milky has the OMG I beleive, and perhaps Peter could be persueded into the test with his Janspeed!

Let me know!

Shaun

Indeed I do and yes it is also waved of hire charges should it be needed

Ive done a few miles with my OMG now and after a fairly long trip yesterday I got out at Scotts and felt a bit deaf/dissorientated lol On the way home though, I found some lovely sweeping roads through the Swindon area leading in to Oxfordshire and using a few more revs and gear changes found the exhaust not at all bad. Its definatly the lower frequency stuff that hurts the ears like you say.

Excellent post though!! Didn't realise how the db/volume increases each time either

I can sort of do a compare as I had a custom / straight through exhaust on mine when I bought it - was so loud my missus could hear me when I was parking up and we lived on the 49th floor! Drone / boom was pretty bad from 2k-3.5k so long journeys I used to try and keep out of that zone.

I got a bit fed up of it to be honest so switched to Janspeed back box- nice bass / burble when tootling around town, pops and crackles and when you boot it has a great rasp sound to it. Not too loud or boomy though inside, defo wish I had done it earlier cos it makes the car much more relaxing to drive.

Same here. I followed David to SGM. Max 65 all the way, and the monotonus drone left me feeling somewhat out of it. Quick blasts on my own freedom is much more enjoyable and melodic. I found the standard exhaust very much like that annoying crazy frog moped zing.

I was in your neck of the woods half hour ago, suprised you never heard me thundering along the Welly road lol

Old man "Grrr these blasted kids with their noisy cars" hehe

Interesting write up though. Damage to hearing is perhaps not a major concern when you are younger, it certainly wasn't a concern of mine at festivals and night clubs even if it is nowadays, it's good advice.
As much as I like the sound of a decent sports exhaust system I think I'll pass on anything over standard if my passengers or myself will suffer hearing damage from prolonged exposure.
