The Renault Welding Thread

Can’t remember if I have said before . I was folding a few door thresholds to day and fucked one up so Had a play and turned it in to a sill section . So if you get stuck we may be able to make a panel . Restricted to 1.8 m long thoug 77F6F9DB-8B72-4E04-8FDB-8F9C3448D269.webp2093F6F0-C293-40B2-A5C6-E48A28940BE7.webp

Welcome aboard ;)

Which welder did you go for? Which setting / gas are you using?

Getting the initial setup is improtant and then keep praticing noting the changes and what went well / bad will help

Thanks, i went for a cheap basic unit to get me started. The Clarke 102NG (gasless), i have a mate with a better gassed one but for simple spot welded panels i thought this would be ideal.

You're right, trying to get the initial set up and working out what happens when you adjust the wire speed or heat has been interesting. Just been messing around with it tonight and am going to do some real testing tomorrow night.

Anyone welded their own roll cage? I am fairly confident in my welds penetrating enough and tidy enough but as with most things like this when it's not your job and more hobby based.......you question your abilities and if safe etc

Certainly a few companies that can mandral bend cage tube to your drawings and save a chunk of cash

Welcome views & feedback.....I would say I am around @DaveL485 levels of madness in the workshop and he is leaving it to the experts.....my wife agrees with Dave and told me to just finish house renovation lol

Would you bet your life on it? Or your ability to walk? Because thats what might be on the line.

I'm confident @Mark_L has the skills and experience given his job and credentials and experience.... I absolutely do not have that behind me.

@DaveL485 you are correct and while could be confident in welds would not bet my life on it........although that is prob true of even the thing that is my job lol

@Mark_L want to build a bad boy cage for my 7 style kit car?

I can do that for you, I have my own hydraulic tube bender now so not a problem.

Trying to build on my tools so I can do more for myself, not that we have that much here, has improved since I started.

Looks great that’s Dave

I am seriously contemplating buying a tig welder and I saw a training method where you draw lines and Mimic the movement of the torch head between the lines with a highlightpen so had a go this morning 😂
Be great to see any competent tig welders do the same to see what motion they use, circular, side to side etc

Looks spot on Dave ;)
When I found a sweet spot for the thin stuff on the settings I marked the dial positions with a sharpie. Just a little dot. It might sound silly but it's been really useful. The right of the three lines above is 1mm replacement steel to 0.8mm original steel butt joined and i'm dead pleased with that.

Jumping in on this one, as welding is something i have rarely done over the years. Been looking at the Extra, its still rock solid in the general scale of things, but i will need to get the knotted wheel on a few bits soon and get on top of it, which will reveal some small holes no doubt.

Looking at spending up to £1k on a mig setup that will last me basically forever, what would be a nice set to start with. Ive used the clarke sets in the past which were ok, but wondering what else is out there.

I looked around a fair bit and while tempted with a few 'more' expensive options settled and very happy with the rtec mig180

While the rtec 180 welder is not £1k throw in a decent auto dimming mask, trolly, big bottle of gas deposit, some steel you quickly are at £1k some gloves and clamps also if you dont have them

I ran mine on 13amp plug until recently with no issues for power setting used. When I had our consumer unit upgraded recently was rude not to get stuck in and wire a dedicated 16amp feed to give full power if needed

Would be nice to get a full kit and pub bottle for a grand if its doable. Got to be domestic plug as no 3 phase in the garage, got a beefy supply set up ready, my sparkie done the electrics with welding in mind so can get some decent poke in that respect.

Just had a look and the Rtec looks good, euro torch too. Might see if i can get a decent set of overalls too, as last time i done a bit of welding ten year ago, set meself on fire 😆
