The Renault Welding Thread

0.9mm is what I used as it was the nearest readily available to whats on the car for floor pans and panelwork, inner sills and more structural parts on a 5 are 1.2mm ( inner sills etc), brackets etc might be 1.5/2mm , important thing is to match what your welding to, I don't know if thickness varies across models/years or factory origin ( later Romanian Campus?) but I'm sure Camprust ( 1987 so should be French ) floor pan measured at 0.7mm?
Most of my steel comes from the same ebay source, by the time I've ordered it and it arrives at the door it's more time effective than going to a stockholder.
You can use Zintec to help keep corrosion at bay, I've considered it.....but there may be additional fumes from coating,if you don't clean it off properly? There wouldn't be much coating left by the time you'd cleaned it off on a small repair.

Love the thread...

So what thickness sheet metal are pople using for panel work? Want to get some so i can start getting some practise in with the correct stuff... fun times ahead this year!!!
The OE Renault stuff for outer sills and most panels is about 0.8mm but I have been welding in 1mm.

Inner sills are a bit thicker, maybe 1.5, I have been patching in 2mm.

Don’t weld the galv sheet that often , but your wright , evil shit that comes of it , when we do air feed mask is advised. We tend to weld the edges and clean back a little and weld it on the run ( down hill ) I have to do some this week I will post a pic if I think it’s tidy enough .

Sod the thin stuff , had a go on a 550 amp migatronic today 1.2 mm wire welding 15mm plate . The crackle was amazing the down side was I had lace up boots on . Them sparks are just a bit warmer than I am used to . Demode one as I may of said before a while back . But this was a proper go in my mates workshop .

Cheers
Been running a bigger torch with 4m lead on . Got a new benzil mb36 torch , made such a difference. It’s me being tight and using cast offs from the bigger welder . Ran out of gas now . It use to lees than a mile away , they have closed now it’s 10 miles and 4 lots of HS2 road works

Can anyone recommend a reasonable TIG setup for a beginner. It'll mostly be used for exhausts and the like. I have very basic experience with welding. Oxy Acet, Arc and a bit of MIG, covered as part of a mechs course to get us out a jam if we were stuck at sea.

I've been looking at the R Tech TIG160PDC. Seems future proof for what I will be using it for.

Any info is appreciated.

I have an R tech 160 ac/dc and can't fault it. Had it around 6/7 years now.

R-Tech kit is fab for the money, I can't recommend them enough for equipment and customer service. They have a website full of educational material too for noobs like us.

Whats peoples opinions on what to coat the bare metal in if you dont have time to finish up before welding. Something to coat and protect while sat there waiting?
