The Cycling Thread

Gravel bike's had enough attention this last couple of weeks, back to dealing with the road bike. One of the pedals plastic piece broke meaning I couldn't clip in anymore, I think they're as old as the bike (20 years) and an unknown on the make. Quick search on eBay, £11 Inc yellow cleats and delivery later..... 2nd hand Shimano SPD SL pedals. Sidenote, gotta love the Mavic carbon rim 😁

Ordered new Shimano blue cleats

Fitted to these awesome Fizik shoes, another eBay purchase a few months backDSC_1637~2-01.webp
Both bikes need a decent scrub so I'll sort some cleaning materials and brushes this week.

I should buy some decent shoes. I got some mid-range decathalon ones just to see if I got on with them, I didnt like the foot position change at first but I think i've got used to it now.

Any tips or recommendations for a front light? I have one but its a cheapo ebay job just to see me through the evenings last autumn. Something akin to the rear one posted above would be good.

This is what I run, what I love about it is the fact you can set it to a solid white light, then there’s a secondary LED that flashes as well, so you’ve got the light and the be-seen visibility of a flash.

Mind you, as I found out myself recently, you can very nearly get squished on a roundabout if the drivers not paying attention, so I’m also running a head light as well now so it shines where I’m looking, and you can look the feckless drivers in the eyes

Not had any trouble since... 🤞

20 mile ride out on Saturday, 58 mile ride out on Sunday. This week's ride is similar to last week but wanted to pay more attention to the 2 forests on the loop, Rendlesham and Tunstall Forest. Rendlesham had a 6 mile trail which was cool and consisted of dry mud and sand, gravel and stone roads. Tunstall was more for MTB bikes so I came off that trail early on and made up my own routes then carried on my loop ride once I'd done enough. I also tried the rear light just to see how long it would last, so the flash option on no:2 and was still working for the 5-6 hours I was out 👍

Rendlesham in Suffolk, it's a disused airfield in the background there's loads of those concrete shelters there. When I'm there again I'll take some more photos, it would be cool to get in there.
Your EXIF info told me MOD Woodbrige, but if thats where you say you are Ill believe you :)

Bentwaters was a amazing cold war jet place..

Just googled, so I guess Rendlesham is the forest but indeed it does say Bentwaters

When everything's back open I'll have to pay a visit. They actually used to run trackdays at RAF Woodbridge, I did a day there probably back in 2007-8. It was a 'track' set up on the hard concrete and ran in between some of the buildings.

Work car had to be dropped off at the local garage to have the brakes sorted, great opportunity for a scenic bike ride back homeDSC_1665~2-02.webpDSC_1689~2-01.webpDSC_1669~2.webpDSC_1688~2-01.webpDSC_1676~2-01.webpDSC_1683~2-01.webp

Came home to these side loading bottle cagesDSC_1696~2.webp
Then gave the bike a clean, the pergola came in handy.

For some reason the colour and depth loading up seems to have been stripped away.

Did this monday, 40km then break for coffee and cake and back on it... the last 10 though were tough going, energy levels dropped of a cliff. Think I need to look into a proper food strategy, bananas and pasta right?

Fuel up before, hydrate too, plenty of fluids. I put electrolyte tablets in my water on longer rides. Nothing wrong with a quick coffee and cake stop en route, can take snacks too and put em in your back pockets of your cycle jersey.... If you have a cycle jersey.

Can always check on whatever routes you do to see if there are any coffee shops, newsagents, petrol stations... If you need to buy anything.
