With the Apidura frame bag, both the Bontrager and Lezyne bottle cages with 750ml bottles hit the bottom of the frame bag, compared to my road bike I found the seat tube cage was quite a way up.

So armed with 2 freebie pieces of metal I drilled, tapped, primed and painted black then bolted them back on. Utilising the original bolts and holes along with drilling and tapping holes in the metal brackets, the bottle cages could be relocated further down.

A couple of chilled hours later after work and not a penny spent, all done.DSC_1703~2-01.jpeg

Found a route on Gravel map that runs from Ipswich to Lowestoft so I edited it to join up with it near Woodbridge then ride it as far as Dunwich before heading back to Framlingham. Fell off twice! Stuck at a dead end in the corner of a field, and rode into a farmyard with no way out and had to detour. Unknown route, these things are sent to try us but worked out the detours to get back on 'track'. My best ride out so far on this bike, loving every minute. PS the homemade bottle cage adapters didn't budge a mm on the 50 mile ride.

Yesterday, 50 miles on all sorts of terrain, and today after nearly 3 months! A quick 10 mile blast along Southend seafront on the retro road bike to try out the new Shimano blue cleats. God I've missed it! Weird riding it again after nearly 3 months and using the gravel bike. Its much lighter and nimble, more compact, narrower bars. It picks up the pace so nice.

I also have this what must be 25 years old mountain bike in my sisters shed, a Scott Vail. I've had it about 10 years now and after putting some ok tyres on it I thought I'd take it out on a sunny Saturday seawall ride. More forgiving than the gravel bike with the bigger tyres and Rock Shox fork suspension.DSC_1786-01.webpDSC_1794-01.webpDSC_1795-01.webpDSC_1796-01.webpDSC_1791-01.webpDSC_1798-01.webpDSC_1802-01.webp

Probably a one off average! I was surprised myself when I stopped halfway and it was showing 17.3 which included having to stop a couple of times at some temporary roadworks traffic lights. Usually the last part of the rides I tail off a bit but this time I dug in a bit and pushed on, I've gone onto the drops a hell of a lot more as well since using the gravel bike so I'm doing it on the road bike as well. Again just grinding it out and staying in a smaller rear cog, by the time I was a couple of miles from home along the flat section along the seafront I really pushed myself one last time to spend whatever I had left.

I decided riding 7 miles to work on a jump bike wasn't ideal so I hopped on the bandwagon :)

Picked up a single speed Muddy Fox for £70 on ebay.

Went for a quick 2 mile blast this afternoon, instantly realised the tyres were almost flat bit still managed a healthy 27mph.

So far I've put air in the tyres, raised the seat and put the brake levers at a sensible angle :)
I'll be changing the pedals for DMR V8s like all my big bikes. Maybe some 2 finger levers at some point.
