So..... That 150 miles over a weekend..... Done, well 155 ✅

Saturday, set off just after 7am, I wanted an early start just in case of any problems en route and to head out of Southend before the traffic build up. It's about 11 miles before you hit the country roads, at that point I feel I can start to enjoy the ride. It's unbroken, no stop-start at traffic lights every so often.

First stop was about 33 miles in and 4 miles south of Colchester, a snack comprising of half a chicken sub, half a pack of salt N Vinegar crisps and a few swigs of drink. Total fluid level for each ride was 2.5L, two 750ml bike bottles with electrolyte tabs and two 500ml bottles of juice. I also had strawberry laces for sugar intake and delish content along with breakfast bars to eat while riding.

The other 2 towns I had to encounter was Colchester first which took me right through the high st and Ipswich. Both were fairly straightforward, they both had cycle lanes which helped me thread my way through. Ipswich was more hitting the outskirts and easier. Once I passed them both it was back to country roads. The beauty of the Garmin Edge Explore is that you choose the destinations and it picks the most cycle friendly routes, you can also edit the route if needs be using the Garmin connect app. Plan the route on the app, switch on Bluetooth then the phone pairs with the sat nav device and sends through the route.... Easy.

After Ipswich I did stop a couple more times and arrived at my destination at 1pm... 78 miles. I didn't take any photos on the Saturday as I was concentrating on riding an unknown route, however on the return route I made a point of stopping whenever I wanted to take photos. It's not about hitting the average speed it's just as much enjoying the countryside and fresh air.

A great ride there and back, I'd like to do it on the road bike to see the difference in time.

Well done mate, thats a huge distance! I think my furthest one-dayer is 62 miles.
Thanks mate, 62 miles is a decent mileage.

I felt I had it in me to do the 78 miles up there, it was the coming back the next day. It's amazing how the mind comes into play, having to switch off for the rest of Saturday and deal with it on the actual day itself.

I'll be back out this weekend but the plan is to take it off road in its more natural environment. The road bike needs replacement pedals.

Fair play to you @Ricardo sir!! You’ve got kahunas the size of melons to get out there like that!!

I’ve set myself a goal to bike from Peterborough to Skegness sometime this summer, and it’s 62 miles, something I’m working up to... but there’s you nipping out for a 150 mile weekender!!

Fair play indeed!!

do you maintain the bike based on mileage you do ?
There's not much needed save oiling the chain and checking tyre pressures. I've done over 3000km on mine, ive oiled the chain, replaced one set of tyres and inner tubes (age more than wear) and changed the pedal crank as the bearings wore and there was some play in it. I havent even had to adjust the brakes up yet.

The road bike had all new cables, bar tape, innertubes when I bought it 7 months ago. After every ride I'll clean the chain and mechanism then a dab of lube. I haven't taken the gravel bike proper off road yet, that'll need a decent jetwash and lube up afterwards. They don't need much in the way of maintenance and thankfully with the help of the GCN channel on YouTube along. The way they've given me invaluable advice, hacks, tips.

It's been a long and costly process! I think I'm buying something different for both bikes and me every couple of days.

Bought this 'escape pod' by Topeak, gravel bike has a 3rd bottle cage so I've utilised the space for this. It's storage for an innertube, tyre levers, pump and whatever else that will fit. It has a neoprene liner to stop bits rattling around inside I suppose, it means I can use the saddle bag for more storage too if I'm out for the day. New rear light as well, slimline and sits snug behind the seat post.DSC_1628~2.webpDSC_1632~2.webpDSC_1627-01.webp
