The 1957 Dope Dauphine

so the 314 has a 10 spline out put but a uj that swaps it from 10 to 20 spline or have I got that wrong?

A 314 in my 4CV has a 10 diff/ 20 shaft, but this might vary, either between years of 4cv and later Dauphine with 314
Early 4cv had a 289, later ( as two cars overlap) have 314
Dauphine early is 289, later 314, early Dauphine Gordini 318, later 325 or 330....not sure without looking in books and being an internet expert , which I’m not.
4cv shafts should be same length as common mod was wacking Dauphine Gordini arse end straight in 4cv, cutting inner wings to get spring mounts in, I may be able to get you some 4cv shafts, but can’t for a couple of weeks cos geezer has been opened up for some nasties chopping out, so he’s laid up, and I wouldn’t promise anything I’m not certain I can come up with.

Why not just put complete R8 rear end in it. Then you will get discs as well.
Might end up having to go that route. After speaking with some french lads i was initially informed it would be a straight fit in which is why i went ahead for the swap bar needing to plumb it in and make a gear linkage. If i knew i needed to do the whole swap in id of either not bothered for now or got hold of the whole backend from somewhere. R8 back end also needs further mods for control arms and fuel tank either modifying or relocating. Again further work. I should know by now a quick engine swap rarely is.....

I will be picking up a pile of engine parts tomorrow along with some r8 half shaft so will see where we are at. Should have everything to build the engine up now bar a carb so i can crack on with that whilst sorting the driveshaft issue.

The 314 I’ve just rebuilt came to me in a box part disassembled but defo out of Dauphine cos of crown and pinion and extended studs for gearbox mounts, axle tubes had been gas axe’d off and uj’s were in box, with course splines on diff and fine on shafts.....so unless uj’s weren’t from box, 20 spline Dauphine shafts exist.

A chap called Brian Whiteside posted on my fb post saying that he has never had an issue mixing parts and shafts between the 4cv, dauphine and r8/10. He mentioned he has never measured them just fitted the correct spline count to the outputs and it should bolt up fine. Fingers crossed I'm flapping over nothing and when I get the shafts tomorrow they just drop in somehow.

I don’t like.....that’s a bummer, I would bet Dauphine and 4cv were same, but 8/10 wasn’t sure.
Dauphine fine spline shafts on your shopping list.

A few french people and brian are now suggesting the same as you did earlier, hybrid UJs. 20 gearbox to 10 shaft. As that would drive the correct length shaft.

Well.....I don’t like to brag,but.......:yes3.gif:
Only joking

Fine spline shafts I would have thought were a later improved shaft...dunno ,but would make sense.?

you can brag when you are right for sure lol (y)

So its down to 2 options really, modify the UJ's (find some one to machine them for me) or find some later 20 spline dauphine shafts. Another person has been in contact saying these exist also.

Shafts IMO, some will turn up, they’ll be stronger, future proof if you push up nearer 100 burpings , but obvs only if some turn up.
There was always gonna be something despite what people say, it’s never as easy doing it , as it is saying it.
You’ve made great progress, cracking on like a good ‘un

Cheers @Turbell really owe you for all the help with this old stuff.

And guess what they do exist, Duncan has now found them in a catalog after not initially and Brian Whiteside has found one (y) so these unicorn halfshafts are real :D just need to try and buy one and find another to also buy.....

In the picture above is a long and short 20 spline dauphine shaft. It looks like i could get away with shortening the end of the longer one. The R8 shaft is a little different and doesnt look as if i could do the same as the spline section is shorter.

@Turbell I've been given your name as someone to contact for the shafts I want, all the usual contacts and faces have been asked 😁

I have paid for the ones from Brian this morning, everyone that replied with the correct shafts on leboncoin dont want to post to the UK unfortunately so as long as he has measured them correctly I have at least 1 of the half shafts I need. Hopefully he gets them out quickly and I get them this week.

Next for me is to start pulling the engines apart to make 1 good one from about 3, what could go wrong 😂
