The 1957 Dope Dauphine

Note to self, when quickly repairing the seats frame make sure you shield it very well and have a hose to hand. The 60 year old seat and the hay/hair mesh that's inside lights very easily and burns quickly.........🤦🏻‍♂️

wow thats bad, luckily i had the seat out of the car. I've seen a few cars get badly damaged when welding, the stuff in them just carry on smouldering so even when you think it's out it reignites

So with shielding carrying on until the end of june I thought feck it, I'm going to go for an engine swap. I need to remove my engine and box, then exchange it for a 4 speed box, then go pick up an 1108cc engine then refit it all back in with custom piping for the rad a whole other assortment of parts I dont even have yet. Would be nice to have the whole lot done before i return to work. fingers crossed

Wow a gruelling 2 hours in the sun and a boiler suit but the whole lot is out. No major issues with rusty bolts or anything, a few checks of the manual to make sure I was removing things correctly. The whole lots is pretty much held in with 4 bolts, could definitely do with some sort of tie bars adding when it's all refitted. Chuffed with that though, never lifted a body up and over the engine before. 20200530_142203.webp20200530_144024(0).webp20200530_145915.webp20200530_145110.webp20200529_162132.webp20200529_162137.webp

So the new setup, once ive collected it from different places is a type 330 00 4 speed gearbox, its an early one i think and has a 10 spline output shaft. 1108cc bottom end but it will end up mated to to a 986cc head, this bumps the compression up a little and makes it a little more peppy. I have found most of it in part form so it will need building up again, i think the only things left to find are a carb, friction plate and fuel pump. I hope to run it still as 6v so will be keeping the dynamo and coil from my current setup. Theres a lot more i need to do even once slotted back in the hole. Most relocate the radiator the the front of the car, im tempted to get a bigger custom "full width" maybe one in the rear in the standard position and run it with a 6v electric fan if heat is an issue.

As this was quite common back in the Renault tuning days, 4 branch manifolds and weber sidedraft manifolds are all available so could possibly get that in there with a lumpy cam in the future...... for now its just get it all collected, built and back in the boot (y)

Anyway a few pics of what ive agreed to buy for the project.

12V isn't that hard to do, only part you really need is a 12V wiper motor and coil, swop all bulbs and separate the dash feed with a step down 12-6V brick, that way fuel/temp/oil pressure senders stay as is, lightweight alternator, I'm still using 6V starter, just spins quick like a modern car, it's been on three years like that.
Little Cheekycunto battery, dump reg, add modern flasher unit etc, you can add a stereo, fag lighter, charge phone, sat nav, cheaper more available battery.....takes the faff out of having 6V.
6V is fine if you're after originality, works perfectly well in good nick, but can't see the point of keeping it otherwise, cos it'll always be a stumbling block if you're gonna 'use' the car.

I might look at it in the future but after sorting it all out it after getting it back it hasn't caused me a single issue (touches wood). I did find the step downs online though so if the reg or dynamo pack up i will definitely switch it out for 12v.

Are the braces like you have added to your 4cv axle a worthwhile upgrade? scary how little keeps everything in place out back

Leading arms ? Deffo, night and day stability wise, a few have enquired about me doing theirs, but it needs exhaust altering etc, hours mount up.
Is that an 8/10 rear engine mount crossmember? And if so is that your intended angle of attack? Just found one in shed
I’m not intimate with 8 layout, hands on, thought they may be mounted on side of block as 5G conversion uses a 5 GT block?......haven’t done it so don’t know
Sticking with carbon bearing as well, I’ll see if there’s a friction plate somewhere, just looked at pressure plate think it may be same as Dauphine dia wise
Expected your to go 5 1397cc TBH

I'm not sure, I'm assuming it is an 8/10 item with the matching kidney plates, unsure if I need it yet will need to study pictures.

carbon bearing? no idea tbh, I think I need a 160mm friction plate with a 10 spline centre to match the release bearing and cover.

1397cc may definitely be on the cards at a later date, especially as someone has one stashed away in his garage. I am a little worried about how much the gearbox can take though?

That said I did see an r8 for sale with a gtt 1397 setup including the turbo on a stock 4 speed 🤷🏻‍♂️

One in Sheffield? Think it had R10 1300 tranny which I think is strongest/highest ratio....don’t quote me , cos anything I haven’t done myself , I don’t know.
Just been to my old fellas and he has a pressure plate on shelf same as you’ve pictured , he says is early carbon bearing 8, looks same diameter as Dauphine friction plate, later 8/10 had proper bearing.
If it’s Dauphine size friction I’ve got loads of 10 spline.

ooooo do you? from what I'm told the one I need is the same size as a dauphine at 160mm, later ones may be bigger. If you have any spare friction plates going let me know and I'll happily purchase one. I'll confirm for definite once I have the other parts in my had.
