The 1957 Dope Dauphine

POR15 is amazing, just make sure you don't get it on yourself, as it's almost impossible to remove.

First time i used it ten years ago i thought it you would be able to get it off skin with cellulose thinners, had to scrub it off with a scouring pad. Comes off with time according to the tin 😆

Same here, scourer and pain. It lasts really well, doesn't peel off like lots of other stuff I've tried

Hand brake was pretty poor on the dope so I decided to give it a tweak. I started by adjusting the shoes on all 4 corners first. Easy job and I was greeted with all the adjusters being free. Then on to the handbrake itself, it's a basic threaded rod affair so i removed it cleaned the threads and refitted. It work a little better but I am out of adjustment now. Could get a few more mm if I removed the lock nut or run the die down it further and chop a little off the end. The old workshop manual gave me the information on how to tweak everything 👍🏻to be honest the drums are old and feel a little oval when testing by spinning the wheel, i also found what i think is a duff wheel bearing. More tinkering added to the list.

Not telling my grandma how suck eggs, but did you back h/brake off before setting shoes?
Just put a sleeve on rod and that gains you some adjustment if you still need it
Rear bearings are a plain ball race so there's usually play in them, fronts are a standard size taper, one inner one outer, I've got rears probs and can give you front codes if needed

back it off? as In i took the handbrake off and put it to the floor before making adjustments? it's a front bearing making the noise

Yes, handbrake totally out of the equation, whether just really loose on the rod or totally disconnected.
Front inner is a 30204, outer a 30203, pretty sure, but probs stamped on them anyhow

yep rears adjusted with it totally off, cheers for the numbers ill look into replacing them (y)

@Turbell one of the sites list Dauphine/R(/R10, wheel bearing set in front, suitable for Renault Dauphine, R8, R10. The bearing set consists of 2 bearings. Bearing 1 = 17x40x13,2mm. Bearing 2 = 22x47x20,75mm

One of the bearings (30203) you said match, the other doesnt is it s compatible part? its alot cheaper to buy them based on your part numbers than listed as a wheel bearing set.

Dunno, I've got a 4cv hub in front of me and a pair of bearings I've bagged up with those numbers on them ready to go in, I'm sure I supplied those numbers recently to a mate for a Dauphine, your measurements you're quoting don't have a matched bore?

dont worry. if I pull them the car becomes incapacitated and I need it mobile at the moment. I've looked on the pics that brentagne auto supply and the part number you gave are visible on their bearings 👍🏻

@Turbell you are a legend.

Today's job on the dope was have a crack at the wheel bearings. I was expecting to remove the drums and have to get them to a garage with a press to get it all sorted but a trusty hammer and punch set saw the bearing housings out with ease. I was very surprised at how easy the job was, not sure if that's a good thing 🤷🏻‍♂️. Anyway all the old taper bearings removed and parts cleaned up before re fitting with the skf bearings that were purchased at a fraction of the price of buying them as a dauphine specific kit 👍🏻. One of my drums has had some damage in the past almost as if it ran on the brake shoe rivets so once the world is a little more normal again I'll see if I can get them faced off somewhere. All spinning smooth and freely now with no odd noises.

I've never worked on one of those. But pretty much all cars I've ever serviced or worked on with tapered wheel bearings have been able to knock the outer races out and in again with hammer and a bearing driver.

Really love this of car! I'd never heard of one until a few months ago and saw one on one of the Turkish IG Renault groups I follow.

Super dope. 😁😁

Decided to set the idle a bit better if i could as i am soooo bored at the moment, When i borrowed the timing gun and compression tester off the mechanic over the road there was also a Gunson colour tune in the box. Thought id give it a go and tweak the mixture until i had a blue flame as instructed. Never seen the flame in an engine first hand before, quite cool really. Balanced up the the idle mixture with it running smooth and at around 720rpm on the timing gun. All seems sweet. Nearly out of petrol though so will need to get a Jerry can filled up sometime so i can then drive it to a garage once allowed out a little more.
