The 1957 Dope Dauphine

So I found a little water leak on the end of the head, a chap at work had some gasket paper so I removed the plate and old gasket, cleaned it up and made a new one with some added hylomar blue. hopefully that sorts it. Managed to get all 4 bolts out without snapping them. Made myself a new King lead using some spars I had kicking about and then swapping the boots around. Set the point gap though I need to look into why the dizzy seems loose whilst clamped up. Not much else done. Tomorrow I will set the valve clearances and hopefully have the spark plugs. Fingers crossed it starts well and gains some lots performance.

Once it's running check the dwell with a multi-meter it's should be 57° more accurate than setting the points gap.
Then set timing at idle 12 - 14°.

a chap at work said hes got one of those mystical devices, once i get it running again I'll pop over and set it on there. I take it super unleaded 99ron is the closest I can get to 4 star leadeds octane rating?

Wouldn't fret over that,95 will be fine , it'll run happily on tramp cider with that comp ratio.

Time it to how it runs best without pinking, starting point will leads on dizzy cap oriented in 12-3-6-9 o'clock looking at engine in line, check fit of cap, bit of rubber tape trapped in can stop them moving about, there's no vac advance on std engine , but check dizzy is internally free free cos IIRC it'll still have bob weights to advance it with revs, so timing light check on pulley and you'll see it advance....think that's right on straight 670 type engine, earlier 662 4cv engines possibly don't.....but I never quote anything as gospel, cos I ain't on them day in day out.

removed the dizzy and found the clamp that held it not doing much so I adjusted that to make it hold the dizzy tight. Everything inside seems to move freely too so fingers crossed it's all good. I mean it cant be too bad after doing 130miles in the state it was in. Have removed the rocker cover and everything looks ok though in will gap everything before refitting. Plugs should be here tomorrow so hopefully I can put some more miles on it with (hopefully) a little more poke and willingness to accelerate.

Right all fresh bits fitted and shes up and running. The carb is so old skool it doesn't seem to have an accelerator pump jet? so pumping the throttle doesn't seem to help when cranking. The 6v also is slow as funk if the battery isnt tip top. Any way quick run to a local garage for a splash of fuel, still dog slow but gives a little more confidence when pulling out. I think I have another slight leak though at the water pump, yay more tinkering. Oil change next. Didnt many pics though 🤦🏻‍♂️

Great, the car started on the button a mo ago. Noticed on start up the water being thrown out the overflow past the pressurised cap.

I think the hg is gone 🤦🏻‍♂️

The head gasket is a few hr job as long as the liners haven't dropped. They are pretty robust though so it is a bit unusual.

It should also have a heater, a box in the engine bay that blows air forwards it seems to be missing.

not sure if I just have renault paranoia and a dirty coolant system? car still starts perfectly well. idles well. might try cleaning the coolant system out and flush it all and try again.
