Swedish Project! (R122B)

Linus Sweden

New Member
Hello!

My name is Linus and i come from Sweden, as my name already tell you, im 19 year old and bought my Alpine 5 Turbo 2-3 years ago.
i have some thoughts running around in my head since i totaly screw apart the whole car for restaurations and optimization!
some of the thoughts I got is:

----------------------------------------------------------------- Question Part of the Thread -----------------------------------------------------------------

1, Can anything be done to the shifter/gearbox? i think its like a sponge when shifting!

2, How much power does the engine/gearbox deal with? What can i do to make it more stable? im thinking of 180-250hp(to much?)

3, Is there to be done/take from other cars to make it 4 bolted? and what bolt cirkel will it be?

4, better brakes = alpine 5 coupe?
better brakes 4bolt = ?
----------------------------------------------------------------- Project Part of the Thread -----------------------------------------------------------------

What i am planing to do to the Engine:

*New pistons (i suppose Wössner) 1397cc or 1550cc (havent desided)
*Stronger Liners(?)
*New Turbo (big + if it's with separate wastegate)
*Home Made Exhaust Manifolder
*Home Made Inlet manifolder
*Home Made Plenum Chamber
*Home Made "slide valve" (don't know the correct english word)
*Tune the cylinderhead with bigger valves and stuffs.
*drysump maybe?
*Home made Electrical Fuel Injection (including Megasquirt ECU)
*Custom Made intercooler + possibly bigger waterradiator + oil radiator.
*solve so that i'm not blowing headgaskets every now and then
*Another Camshaft maybe(?)
[MORE TO COME]

What i am planing to do to the Shell:
*Thicker Torsinbars(?)
*Thicker Anti-roll bars
*better brakes!
*Yellow Bilstein shocks (what color is harder?)
*Built in Rally cage (going to check the swedish rules for this, if its even possible, since its going to be road legal?)
*possibly make the car 4stud(?)

[MORE TO COME]

this is the car when i first bought it (after som screwing-apart):

And this is my "soldering project" from school:

Yes its a Megasquirt including possibility of controlling both fuel and ignition =)

and this is the car today:

my fathers car in the background, aswell an R5 Alpine/Gordini Turbo!

THE CAR COT IS MADE BY ME :D out from 2 engine stands.

Hope to spend some happy times with this forum, sadly im from sweden so i wont be able to come to all the meetings :(

1, Can anything be done to the shifter/gearbox? i think its like a sponge when shifting! - I thought they were all like this?

2, How much power does the engine/gearbox deal with? What can i do to make it more stable? im thinking of 180-250hp(to much?) the engine is easily capable of such power, not sure about the gearbox. - you will need a good clutch too....
3, Is there to be done/take from other cars to make it 4 bolted? and what bolt cirkel will it be? there is a link on here to a blue mk1 5 that has 4 stud wheels fitted , and you can clearly see that he has had the original hubs redrilled to 4 stud. - i'd personally get them done to 4 x 100 PCD, as loads of wheels fit this pattern
4, better brakes = alpine 5 coupe?
better brakes 4bolt = ?
im not sure about the better brakes, as your discs would still be the same? - the best you could do is maybe get grooved and drilled discs made up and then run decent pads? if that isnt good enough then you're looking at bespoke adapters and 2 or 4 pot calipers.

Thank you for those answers!!!

1, i dont know about the gearbox feeling like a sponge when shifting.... just wonder if anyone did something to make it "better". is there possible of some kind of shortshift solution?

2, I am totaly rebuilding the car so i will fit it with a better clutch for sure! any1 know something about a hydraliq clutch for those dini's ?
is it possible to change the gearbox to some other? or the drivertrains to something that handles more power?
what is the maximum turbo preasure possible for those engines? what's need to be done to load like 2 bar?

3, I'm going 4 stud for 2 reasons; 1, 15inch wheels? 2,better (ventilated) brakes? like those from the r5 turbo 2? (r8220 i think)

4, Orginal discs won't be an option since this car is going to handle some of our swedish tracks like "kinnekulle ring", "Mantorp Park" and so on ;)
it will ofcourse be drivable on public roads aswell! would be fun if anyone had a solution to get 4 stud and better brakes.

Thx so far =)

Re: Swedish Speculations and Questions (R122B)

hey linus always good to see cars from another country 8) looks like you doing a thorough job of it,,not a bad choice for a first car i see your dads good taste has rubbed of on you,,i like the shell cot ...should make a tidy car keep us updated,,,im no expert but incase it helps the general thing seems to be 1 bar of boost /15-16 psi=190-200 hp if you convert to blow through with intercooler.

hehe, thanks there =)

Im going to make this baby worth lovin' !!!!! i too think its a nice first car. got the go-cart feeling for sure! i love it!
yea my dads car made me buy my own :O better to catch the sence for nice cars then to catch the swine-flu ;)

Your tips seems to be perfect :P saw them on some france and german forums! but still im going to make it better, to maybe push out like 300hp? the worst thing is the gearbox?! i have NO IDEA about how much power it can handle.. this is the main think that concerns me! the engine itself with some high end parts shouldent have problems hiting 400hp since they had like 380hp in the R5 Maxi Turbo right?

For those who cares i updated the first post and moved the pictures upp there =)

Greetings from Sweden :D

WOW loving this project.

As for stupid power for 300-400BHP your going to need a different gearbox & clutch... most likely going to have to go custom.

If you join RTOC.org there is a guy all andrew cooke who have a R5GTT C1j block with the crossflow head from a gordini turbo and a few other tweeked bits... he must have decent power from 250-350 bhp as he has ran a 1/4 mile 11.58sec with 120mph trap speed... He used a T28 with efi and a 300 piper cam, if you want serious power your going to need serious bucks behind you...

A engine transplant could be the best route to go down...

What is the car to be used for? Every day use? Rally's? 1/4, track days etc?

joining the homepage as wrighting (multitasking! XD)

im curious about this project! seen picture of the car before... randomly on the webb and have been wondering ALOT about it!
the car is going to be a playcar, mostly for trackdays but i want it roadlegal aswell so that i can scare some friends with the DINI-force ;) so another engine wont be something for me! i like the stock engine. just dont want it stock 8)
i have no problems putting money down in this car... well over a 10'000 pounds will be spend i suppose... but i can't figure a solution for the gearbox... is there any modifications done to fit the car with another "better" gearbox? And what are the "weak-parts" in the gearbox?

Anyone have been in contact with this "company": http://keops-racing.skyrock.com/

Thanks for showing intresst!

someone once told me the worst part of the car was getting the power onto the road, as the engine isnt over the top of the wheels....

thats a part of the primary problems...
first of all i should get the car fired up without fire up the gearbox etc.

ps. what about 295/30-R13? XD

I would have thought the standard gearbox would be fairly strong but you might have to be a bit careful with the syncromeshes, particularly on 2nd and 5th. Clutch will be a weak point.

As for getting the power down, a LSD should help. Hard to get hold of, but Moises has fitted one to his. He's got T2 mechanicals in his car, which develops at least 200bhp:

http://www.r5gordini.co.uk/photo-galler ... rbo/Moises

You can also fit power steering - probably a necessity with an LSD. Again, something Moises as done (on my recommendation - I can help with info on how to do that).

Good luck - please keep us informed. Regular photo updates are much appreciated!

Sorry for the big delay between me beeing active here, much work now since i graduated 4th of june and now working to aford the car build.
What is this "LSD" your talking about? im not very good at english car terms

This little "me-returning-from-the-dead-post" is followed by this tiny question:

What would you guys find most nice, using the Gr2 optics with plastic widener over the wheel arch or should i just go with a standard Body?
this car is going to be mostly used for track days and maybe touring europe on some hill climb events and other car events... not MUCH "road use".
