Starter Motor - Replacement Guide - WITH PICS

It's not a hard job at all, 2hrs easy work if your used to working on cars. If you have access to a four poster, it would have been an hours work and I'm not familiar with working on V's....... Always been a Cosworth, TVR, BMW man previously. And with a TVR you have to learn quickly, or pay specialist prices.......LOL

I'll make a point of trying a Bosch Unit to replace it though.

Probably have to buy one outright, as mine is now in a bag in bits........and I can't be arsed putting it back together

Bingo ...

This rebuild deals with one of the most common forms of failure of the Valeo electric starter, namely separation of one or more of the motor magnets from the motor housing. When this occurs, the magnet attaches itself to the armature making it impossible for the starter motor to rotate. There are four magnets within the motor housing. Each magnet is held in place within the motor housing with an adhesive. The symptoms during starter engagement are: the faint sound of the solenoid engaging, instrument lights going from full bright to dim and when measured, the voltage across a healthy battery dropping to approximately 8.5 volts, indicating a high current draw due to the stalled electric starter.

Exact same symptoms as me, and others I think ....

Valeo Starter Issue & Rebuild

I think yours might be too far gone to rebuild Jim even if you felt like it but great to see your approach and the root cause of the problems that can occur - even on a low mileage car.

EXACTLY MY SYMPTOMS................. Couldn't have explained it better myself, that's spot on what's happened to mine. And that explanation appears to be aimed at the "Valeo" brand in particular....... All the more reason to buy a Bosch or Lucas [smilie=thanks.gif] [smilie=thanks.gif]

Great bit of research you did there.

DON'T BUY A VALEO ...........

And so............................... Then Jim went for a well deserved bath [smilie=boohoo.gif] [smilie=boohoo.gif]

Tip of the day.......... "Buy Bosch" It's not a V6 Inherent problem, it's a "Valeo" problem

Another useful article ....

Reportedly, Valeo starters tend to fail over time due. The most frequent failure seems to be due to "lost magnets". These magnets are part of the starter motor itself and are glued to the outer part of the housing; over time, they may simply fall off (probably due to thermal and/or mechanical stress). Loss of one or two magnets may go unnoticed at first, but the resulting debris may block the starter motor in the most unconvenient moments ;-)

It is well possible to repair such a defective starter (there are several descriptions about this on the web; see the link list at the end of this section), but it is probably more efficient to re-use a complete starter motor from a car junkyard. Valeo starters of the type we need were used in a number of smaller cars, such as Opel Corsa, Astra, Kadett; Renault Clio; Citroën AX, BX and C15; Peugeot 205, 206, 306, 307, 309, 405, etc. Those who live in the USA may want to look for Saturn cars. Do not worry too much about the shape of the cast aluminium cone; the important point is that you ask for a Valeo DR6RA or DR6A. (It seems that the starter of the Renault Laguna is even a true 1:1 replacement for the complete BMW part?) - The part swap is pretty straightforward. On both starters, proceed as follows:

Remove the starter from the bike, as described in the previous section.
Remove the starter "gearbox" as described (three Allen-head bolts, one Torx T20). At this point, you will notice a big similarity between the two assemblies; the major "visual" difference is indeed the aluminium-cast housing of the planetary gearbox "nose". It is tempting to do a "quick swap", but be careful: count the number of teeth on the cogwheel; you will need exactly 9!
The starter motor housing is attached to its base plate with two rivets. Drill them out.
Unscrew the short, thick wire that is connected to the starter solenoid (13-mm key).
Carefully withdraw the motor from its base plate.
Clean out the dirt that is eventually present, then swap the starter motors.
Reassemble in reverse order ;-). You do not need to replace the rivets, since the three Allen-head bolts will hold the complete unit together.

Just been on the phone to these guys re a replacement starter motor
LINK

Same Company - Same Item (If you want to buy it via E-Bay)

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/CITROEN-PEUGEOT-R ... 4823140109

They seem very knowledgable and the best price I could find (£110 Next Day Delivery - No Exchange Required). This is for a reconditioned starter motor. The thing that impressed me about these guys (Apart from the price), is that they are fully aware of the Valeo Starter Motor Problems, where the magnets break away from the housing, causing the death of the starter motor. They stated that this is the main reason for the failure of this unit, and apart from this common fault, it is a good starter motor. They also stated that they use a different bonding process for the magnets, and believe there reconditioned units to be better than a new Valeo Unit. And they have a 12 month warranty.

So........ I've ordered one which will be here tomorrow.

Good stuff, I am sure I found these guys when I was looking - have you a part number for the Vee unit Jim as I couldn't figure out which one was the right one for the Vee at the time, I may give em a ring and order one too ...

Looks like I have my weekend project sorted :approve:

Martin

Martin - I just quoted them the original Valeo part number shown on the old starter motor D6RA107

Seems it's the same part number as fitted to quite a few Peugeot, Citroen and Renault 3.0 V6 models.

Just noticed that the one they were advertising on E-Bay has been removed, guess that's the one they're sending me...... [smilie=icon_cheers.gif]

Bloody brilliant.

I wonder how much the stealers would take from you?

£236 from Paul at Renault Direct, which is a good price. If you go to your local Renault Slealer they want well over £250 [smilie=icon_eek.gif] [smilie=icon_eek.gif]

And I'm guessing at £236, you'll be getting original item, which may well have the same inherant problem (Unless they've acknowledged the problem and used a better meathod of assembly. Or if you got to the place I got mine, you get a recon unit where the inherant problem has been taken into account and a different bonding process used to overcome the problem, and you still get a 12 month warranty, just the same as spending more than double.

Seems a "No Brainer" .........................

Simply superb work there Jim and Martin   another problem sorted via v6Clio.net [smilie=icon_cheers.gif] I guess as the cars get older issue's like this will occur  £110 for the recon starter is very good indeed [smilie=boohoo.gif]

Yep - That's the place Martin.

Just make sure if you order one that it is exactly the same one as in that picture...... Ie, 3 x Securing Bolt Holes + the 2 x Smaller bolt holes, as these two smaller holes secure the heat shield.

Some of them appear not to have the additional 2 smaller bolt holes for the heat shield to bolt too.

Details and marking for the one listed on renaultpartsdirect website. It is a service exhange unit.
