Renault 19 16v gearbox

R1916V

Member
Just wondering is the gearbox which are in the phase 1 19 1.8 16v the same as other renault models??

Is this the box I should be looking out for; JB3-051

I know other gearbox's from other models will fit but the ratio's are probably different.

Any information on this would be appreciated

Right the answer is essentially yes... BUT

Early ph1s came with a pressed steel sump, and the bell housing on the gearbox is slightly different. A gearbox from the later ally sump engine wont fit without removing the flywheel cover plate thingy and brace bar, which will leave an opening at the bottom with the back of the flywheel visible. Not the end of the world but technically it's less strong as the block and box are not tied together at the bottom.

The early type box will fit an ally sump engine too but again you'll be left with a gap at the bottom. Again, not really a problem.

The early JB3-051s came in both types so check which you have.

I dont think you'll find an 051 in any other model. Some are probably near as makes no difference but you'll have to find out which ones by trawling the workshop manuals and looking at the ratios.

5th gear went in it but the housing is actually in shit too after it. i thought i would get away with swapping over 5th gear from the other box until i saw the housing.

i have a gearbox out of a doner car i had which is a 1992 phase 1, same as my own but i would probably want to keep an eye out for another spare gearbox, as you couldnt have enough gearboxes for these yolks

would the clio 1.8 16v box be close to the same ratios?

I know a lad that had a laguna box in his before, it was a bit if a disaster to be honest, id rather have it right or else fairly close

Keep in mind some newer Renaults had there speedo pick up from the ABS, so have a look out that the one you get have a place on the box for your speedo, the boxes still fit but no speedo.

I have a clio 16v box in mine, in all honesty the gearing ruined the car.

I want another proper ph1 16V box.

In my R19 16V phase 1 1991 without cat, I have a gear box JB3 044 and from what I saw it is the original one.

wtf

later 19 boxes 083 fit obv.

clio boxes fit too aswell all mk1s 1.8 etc and 2.0ltrs (jc5)

etc etc

why whats up with urs ?

it packed in housing cracked in it too. i had a spare box anyway from another 16v . just bought a clio 16v gearbox yesterday to have in the shed incase the next one goes
